Valheim 1.0 is the game’s full-release version, adding the Deep North as its final biome and ending Early Access. Whether you are new or returning, the key choice is how to handle your world: older saves still work, but Deep North generation works properly only in unexplored areas. Start fresh for a full progression from the beginning; keep your save if preserving progress matters more.

What changed in Valheim 1.0?

Iron Gate released Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026, and describes the Deep North as the game’s final biome. The studio’s release notes list substantial additions, though the counts are the publisher’s figures rather than independently audited totals.

  • Combat and equipment: 40+ new weapons, bombs and ammunition, four armor sets, two capes, two trinkets, and tools.
  • World and building: 10+ creatures, 80+ buildable pieces, locations, events, and other mechanics.
  • Crafting and food: 30+ crafting materials, 20+ food items, and five crafting-related build pieces.
  • Other changes: achievements, upgradeable pockets, a draw-distance setting, a redesigned hammer and serving-tray menu, a magica cloth system, an Ashlands enemy-spawn rebalance, a Unity engine upgrade, music, and fixes.

Iron Gate’s 1.0 release notes provide the full list. Coffee Stain characterizes the update as bringing the game to the team’s intended full survival vision; that is the publisher’s framing, not a guarantee that the game will receive no future updates.

Should returning players keep an old world or start over?

You can continue an existing world; Iron Gate says old saves are not deleted, and new content can appear in them. The catch is terrain generation: biome generation works properly only in areas you have not explored. If you keep your save, travel toward unexplored territory to reach the new biome. Iron Gate says you can head directly toward Deep North, but recommends a new world for the best experience.

Tribes of Midgard: Deluxe Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Explore a bright Norse realm: discover dungeons, slay legendary beasts, and build anywhere as you explore formidable, procedurally-generated lands on your quest to take on Ragnarok.
  • Face colossal game-changers: protect the speed of Yggdrasil from a nightly invasion of helthings, and work together with your tribe to withstand the ever-looming threat of the jotnar.
  • Forge your Viking Legend: choose your class and take the battle into the wilds as you seek resources to craft epic armor and mighty weaponry. Then, unleash powerful abilities and prepare clever village defenses to give your enemies some nasty surprises.
  • Rally the tribe: when the giants arrive, it takes a village to bring them down! Adventure through midgard solo, or form a tribe of up to 10 players in online pve co-op.
  • Keep up the fight: throughout the year, limited time seasonal events bring bigger challenges and even mightier treasures to the endgame of midgard, including new ways to progress and unlockable rewards for use across every game.
Choice Best fit Trade-off
Continue your existing world You want to retain your world and character progress. New biome generation works properly only in unexplored areas, and you skip the opening progression.
Start a new world You want to experience progression from the beginning and follow Iron Gate’s recommendation for the best experience. You begin world progression anew rather than continuing your old world.

Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ, dated July 1, 2026, says: “As usual, your world will receive new content even if it was created before the update, although biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored.”

What happens to achievements and mods?

Achievement tracking begins when you download 1.0, so earlier boss kills do not satisfy achievements that require a kill. Most devcommands and some world modifiers make a character or world ineligible for achievements; characters that used cheats before 1.0 are marked as well.

Mods are not officially supported. Iron Gate warned that compatibility could lag after release; consoles have no mod support, and Steam Workshop is not featured for 1.0.

How does Valheim play, and who is it for?

Valheim is a Viking-themed survival game set in a procedurally generated open world. Its central loop connects exploration and biome progression with combat, food, and base building, while co-op lets players take on that progression together. It is a fit for players who enjoy setting their own goals—whether that means pushing into new territory or spending time building a home—as well as those who want a survival game with a stated endpoint.

PC Gamer reviewer Christopher Livingston gave the game 90/100 in a review published September 8, 2026. He described it as “One of the best survival games around is finally complete” and noted that it has “an actual ending,” while players can continue in their world afterward. Those are Livingston’s assessment and review score, not a universal verdict.

Can you play with friends across platforms?

The official FAQ describes Valheim as a 1–10-player game and says crossplay works between all platforms. Crossplay does not mean your save follows you everywhere: Xbox saves can be accessed on PC if you launch the game from the Microsoft Store, but the FAQ says there is no other cross-platform save-file sync.

Which platforms and stores offer Valheim 1.0?

Iron Gate’s release announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux, and Mac. For PC, the FAQ names Steam, Mac App Store, Humble, and Microsoft Store; console purchases are through the relevant platform’s digital storefront. Check the listing for your specific platform before buying, since availability and storefront details can vary.

What does Valheim 1.0 cost?

Iron Gate’s FAQ lists a U.S. price of $29.99 and notes that regional prices may differ. Treat that as the FAQ’s stated price, not a live quote for every store or region. Existing Early Access owners receive the updated version without buying the game again.

Does 1.0 update every biome or guarantee more content?

No: Iron Gate says 1.0 focuses on Deep North and does not specifically update the Ocean biome. The studio says some optimizations reduce zone-loading microstutters and speed up saving, but large builds are not expected to benefit greatly; it plans further optimization work. The FAQ says bug fixes and quality-of-life updates will continue, while the duration of support and any future content are undecided.
