An unofficial project called rood-boi recompiles Vagrant Story’s decompiled PlayStation code into native Linux and Windows builds. Its renderer can add path-traced or probe-based global illumination, hardware ray-traced shadows and volumetric haze, but the optional Callo Merlose companion is the change that most directly alters how the game plays. The project remains a work in progress, and you must supply your own legally obtained Vagrant Story disc image.
What the port actually is
rood-boi is presented as a native recompilation for x86-64, not a PlayStation emulator or a MIPS interpreter. The original game code is rebuilt to run on a modern Linux or Windows system, while the project replaces the original rendering path with contemporary graphics options.
Linux is the primary documented environment, although Windows builds and a simpler builder workflow are also described. Compatibility, bugs and update frequency can change because this is unfinished community software rather than an official release.

Modern lighting options
The port overview describes Vulkan and OpenGL rendering with native meshes, hardware ray-traced shadows, path-traced or probe-based global illumination, and volumetric haze. These features can produce lighting, shadow and atmospheric effects that the PlayStation version was never designed to calculate.

Ray tracing is optional enhanced rendering, not a prerequisite for playing the base game. A capable Vulkan GPU is required for the ray-traced modes; systems without suitable hardware should use the non-ray-traced renderer when available.
Live camera and lighting tools
A live editor lets users move the camera and place lights while the game is running. That makes the project useful for experimentation as well as for a conventional playthrough, although editor controls and build behavior may change as development continues.

The gameplay additions matter more than the graphics
Callo Merlose can become an AI companion
The Windows build documents an optional mode in which Callo Merlose follows Ashley through rooms and acts as an autonomous partner. She can fight enemies, heal and cast spells without direct moment-to-moment control.
Merlose has independent equipment and progression. The companion documentation also describes separate statistics, selectable magic, friendly-targeting behavior and catch-up handling when she needs to rejoin Ashley between rooms. Those systems turn sections built around a lone protagonist into a two-character combat experience without requiring a story rewrite.

The original narrative remains intact
The companion mode leaves the original plot and cutscenes in place. It is therefore a gameplay overhaul, not a new campaign or alternate script. Players who want the original pacing can avoid the companion option.
There is no confirmed canonical list of exactly two additions
Public descriptions list several other changes, including instant save/load, dynamic lighting, smoother camera behavior, the live camera-and-light editor and companion status handling. They do not establish a definitive, named pair that corresponds to the “two new gameplay additions” wording. The safest reading is that Merlose is the major gameplay change, while the remaining additions are quality-of-life and tool features whose exact availability depends on the build.

How to try it
- Obtain your own game data. The project does not include Vagrant Story assets. Use an unmodified disc image made from a copy you legally own.
- Choose a supported build. Linux is the main documented platform; Windows users can use the available Windows build or the easier builder workflow described by the project.
- Provide the disc image to the build. Follow the release’s current setup instructions for locating the image. File names, folders and builder steps can change between revisions, so do not assume an older guide still matches the latest build.
- Select a renderer. Start with the non-ray-traced Vulkan or OpenGL path if your GPU does not support hardware ray tracing. Enable ray-traced shadows or path tracing only on a capable Vulkan system.
- Enable optional gameplay systems. In the Windows companion mode, choose the Merlose option if you want her to accompany Ashley. Leave it disabled for a closer approximation of the original single-character experience.

Why the source disc still matters
Square Enix’s catalog lists a PS one Books edition of Vagrant Story released on July 20, 2006, for 6,800 yen before tax. That dated catalog entry describes the physical game relevant to the port’s source-media requirement; it does not mean the native project is an official Square Enix release.
Because the port distributes code and rendering technology rather than the copyrighted game data, users are responsible for obtaining and using their own legally obtained image. Availability of physical copies and local rules for making personal backups vary by region.

What to expect from an unfinished project
- Build instructions and supported platforms may change, especially on Windows.
- Ray-traced modes can impose substantially higher GPU demands than the original game; the only documented requirement is a capable Vulkan GPU, not a specific model.
- Visual features and editor tools may be less stable than the core game.
- Companion behavior is configurable but may not match the balance of the original single-character design.
- Keeping an unmodified source image and a separate save backup makes it easier to return to the original experience if a build causes problems.
The practical verdict
The port’s path tracing is the headline technology, but Merlose is the more consequential upgrade for players. It changes combat and room traversal while preserving the original story, whereas the lighting and editor features primarily change presentation. Treat the project as an evolving native experiment: use your own game data, expect platform-specific setup work, and regard ray tracing as an optional enhancement rather than a baseline requirement.
