There is no single best weapon in V Rising. The right choice depends on whether you are clearing PvE groups, dueling another vampire, killing a boss, or gathering resources. Sword is the safest all-rounder, Crossbow offers ranged control, Slashers provide evasive PvP utility, and Spear or Longbow reward players who can maintain distance. Update 1.1 (Invaders of Oakveil) adds Claws, Twinblades and Throwing Daggers, so the current roster has 14 weapon types. This guide compares their reach, speed, burst, area damage, mobility, crowd control, ease of use, boss access and gathering bonuses, with figures qualified to the weapon and patch that provide them.

If you want to try these weapon roles with friends, Godlike.Host offers V Rising game servers through its game panel, with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day with restore.

What counts as a weapon in V Rising?

V Rising is a gothic open-world survival action RPG for PC through Steam and PlayStation 5. Weapons and spells can be mixed, so a weapon is only one part of a build. Your blood type, spells, jewels, armor and the encounter itself can change which weapon performs best.

The current equipment roster contains Sword, Axes, Mace, Spear, Reaper, Greatsword, Whip, Slashers, Claws, Twinblade, Crossbow, Longbow, Daggers, Pistols and Throwing Daggers. Daggers and Throwing Daggers are separate entries; the latter is one of the three weapon styles introduced in Update 1.1.

Every weapon type gains abilities at weapon tiers. The first weapon ability arrives at the Copper tier and the second at the Iron tier. Basic attacks remain important because many skills have cooldowns, resource costs or positioning requirements.

The table describes roles rather than a universal tier list. A weapon with lower tooltip damage can be better if its range, interrupt, escape window or crowd control lets you keep attacking.

Weapon-by-weapon guide

Sword

Sword is the most forgiving general-purpose weapon because it combines quick basic attacks with area damage and a way to close distance. Whirlwind spins around you, dealing 35% physical damage every 0.25 seconds for 1.1 seconds. It is useful when several enemies surround you or when you need to keep moving through a pack rather than stand in one place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shockwave sends a projectile for 70% physical damage and launches the target. You can recast it to teleport to the target and strike three times for 25% physical damage per strike. The first cast creates space or starts an engagement; the recast converts that distance into immediate melee pressure. In PvE, Sword handles mixed groups well. In PvP, the launch and teleport give you a dependable gap-closing threat, although a player who saves an escape can punish a predictable recast.

Axes

Axes are built for committing to a target. Frenzy dashes to the first enemy hit and deals 100% physical damage. On a successful hit, it grants 25% movement speed and 30% attack speed for 0.8 seconds. The short buff window favors an aggressive sequence: connect with the dash, land basic attacks while the speed bonuses are active, then disengage before the opponent’s counterattack.

Axes are simple to understand but less forgiving when the dash misses. They are strong for finishing a weakened target, repositioning around a boss and cutting wood with their +25% material bonus.

Mace

Mace is the heavy control option. Its documented identity is knockback, displacement and area control rather than fast, sustained hits. Use it when creating space matters more than chasing a target: push enemies out of hazards, separate a group, or interrupt a melee threat before it reaches an ally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The broad weapon reference does not provide complete current Mace coefficients, so do not transfer damage numbers from an old build guide. Check the live Mace ability page if you are planning a numeric rotation. Its +25% mineral bonus also makes it the practical tool for mining runs, even when another weapon is better for the fight that follows.

Spear

Spear attacks in a line and has the longest, clearest reach among the traditional melee choices. That makes it a strong single-target weapon: stand just outside an enemy’s most dangerous range, keep the point aligned, and use movement to preserve spacing.

Spear is especially comfortable against creatures and bosses that punish standing underneath them. It is also one of the better PvP choices when you prefer measured pokes to an all-in dash. Its +25% creature bonus gives it a second job during hunting and blood-quality runs.

Reaper

Reaper is a polearm designed around area denial and control. Its documented skills include pull- and knockback-style effects, allowing you to dictate where enemies stand. Sweep a group into a controlled zone, interrupt a dangerous approach, then use spells or a second weapon while the enemies are displaced.

  • New, Enhanced Diplomatic Options: Shape the diplomatic landscape by using political capital to upgrade your traits, change diplomatic relationships, and leverage the benefits of your allies’ traits.
  • New Sponsors: Four new factions have been added to the game including Al Falah, nomad explorers descended from wealthy and resilient Middle Eastern states that possess a rich cultural and commercial heritage.
  • New Artifact System: Collect and combine powerful relics to unlock new perks, unit upgrades, and buildings for your faction on the new world.

Reaper’s reach makes it more forgiving than a short melee weapon in crowded PvE. It is also a sensible boss weapon when the arena gives you room to maintain a safe perimeter. Exact current coefficients should be verified on the live weapon page before building around a specific damage breakpoint.

Greatsword

Greatsword is a Gloomrot-era heavy weapon that combines close-range area pressure with mobility. It is slower and more deliberate than Sword, but the larger attacks can clear clustered enemies and punish a boss after a missed ability.

The Iron Greatsword recipe becomes available after defeating Tristan the Vampire Hunter. Greatsword also grants +25% wood, so it can replace Axes for players who want a heavier combat style without carrying a separate gathering weapon.

Whip

Whip adds a distinct reach and attack pattern to melee loadouts. It occupies the space between a point-blank weapon and a true ranged weapon: you can threaten from farther away than Sword or Axes while remaining in a melee-oriented rotation.

Update 1.1 progression lists the Iron Whip after Domina the Blade Dancer and the Sanguine Whip after Simon Belmont. The weapon’s exact skill coefficients are not consolidated in the available reference, so evaluate its timing and hit pattern in the current game rather than relying on an outdated damage chart.

Slashers

Slashers are the evasive, deceptive choice. Elusive Strike dashes back and forth, deals 60% physical damage and applies a slow. In the October 1.1 patch reference, the fading-snare duration was reduced from 2 seconds to 1.5 seconds; that duration is patch-specific.

Camouflage grants 25% movement speed for 3 seconds. Your next primary attack deals 80% physical damage and incapacitates the target for 3 seconds, but using another skill breaks camouflage. This creates a clear PvP decision: preserve the stealth movement until you are in position, then accept the reveal to secure the incapacitating strike. In PvE, the dash is a safety tool for crossing telegraphs, not merely a damage button.

The Iron Slashers recipe is tied to Jakira the Shadow Huntress. Because Slashers depend on timing and angles, they have a higher learning curve than Sword but a larger payoff for players who can bait an enemy’s defensive cooldown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crossbow

Crossbow is the safest control-oriented ranged weapon. Rain of Bolts fires five bolts; each deals 40% physical damage in an area and applies a 1.5-second fading snare. It is effective against groups when you need to slow several targets rather than focus only the nearest one.

Snapshot deals 75% physical damage, interrupts casts and applies a 2-second fading snare. Save it for a visible boss or player cast instead of firing it on cooldown. Crossbow is particularly useful in PvE expeditions where interruption and spacing prevent damage more reliably than a higher but slower damage number.

Longbow

Longbow rewards preparation. Its primary attack can be charged for 60% to 120% physical damage and grants Focus. Focus stacks up to three times and increases the effectiveness of Longbow skills. A fully charged shot can pierce up to two enemies; each subsequent hit deals 50% of the previous hit’s damage.

The charge mechanic makes Longbow excellent when a boss gives you predictable windows, but awkward when you must dodge continuously. Start charging only when you have a safe line, build Focus without standing in a telegraph, and release before the target changes position. The recipe unlocks after Lidia the Chaos Archer.

Pistols

Pistols provide a mid-range firearm option for players who want to keep moving while dealing damage. Their spacing sits between Crossbow’s long control range and Sword’s melee commitment, which makes them useful in encounters with frequent repositioning.

The October 1.1 patch reference records Explosive Bullet’s explosion damage being reduced from 125% to 115% and a rework to Fan the Hammer. Those are patch notes, not timeless values; check the current pistol page before copying an older rotation or damage comparison.

Claws

Claws arrived with Update 1.1 as one of three new weapon types. The available documentation establishes a fast, close-range style, but not a complete unified coefficient table for every skill. Treat Claws as a mobility-oriented option: they suit players who want to stay attached to a target and turn movement into damage rather than hold a static line.

Because exact cooldowns and damage values can change with balance patches, test the live skill descriptions before committing to a precise Claw build. Their value is clearest in fights where remaining in melee range is possible and repeated repositioning is rewarded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Twinblade

Twinblade is another Update 1.1 addition. Its two-blade attack pattern gives it a rapid, mobile identity distinct from the heavier Greatsword and the evasive Slashers. Use it when you want to keep pressure on a nearby target while moving through the encounter rather than anchoring yourself for charged attacks.

The Iron Twinblade recipe unlocks after Gaius the Cursed Champion. Complete skill coefficients are not established in the available reference, so compare its real performance by observing hit confirmation, recovery time and whether its mobility lets you avoid damage.

Daggers

Daggers are a separate weapon type from the new Throwing Daggers. They offer a quick, close-range attack pattern and fit players who prefer short engagements and frequent repositioning. The available material confirms the weapon’s place in the current roster but does not provide a complete current coefficient table, so avoid assigning them a fixed damage ranking without checking the live ability page.

Throwing Daggers

Throwing Daggers were introduced in Update 1.1 alongside Claws and Twinblades. Their identity is a thrown, mobile attack pattern rather than the point-blank dagger style. They can be considered when you want to maintain movement while threatening from outside immediate melee range, but the available reference does not establish a complete set of skill numbers.

As with the other new 1.1 weapons, judge them by the current tooltip, projectile behavior and recovery animation. Do not assume that the word “dagger” means they share skills or scaling with Daggers.

Which weapon is best for each activity?

Best approach for PvE clearing

For ordinary camps and resource-area enemies, prioritize area coverage, reliable interruption and a way to avoid being surrounded.

  • Sword: Whirlwind clears nearby enemies, while Shockwave launches and then teleports you to a priority target.
  • Reaper: Use polearm reach and pull/knockback-style control to keep a group in a favorable zone.
  • Greatsword: Choose it for heavy area pressure when you are comfortable with deliberate timing.
  • Mace: Pick it when displacement and creating space are more valuable than rapid attacks.
  • Crossbow: Use Rain of Bolts to slow groups and Snapshot to interrupt dangerous casts from range.

For a new player, Sword is the easiest starting recommendation because its skills remain useful even when positioning is imperfect. Experienced players can clear faster with a weapon whose control pattern matches the area and their spell loadout.

Best approach for PvP

PvP is not decided by tooltip damage alone. Compare mobility, invulnerability or escape windows, crowd control, burst timing and whether a skill can be safely aimed at a moving player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Slashers: Elusive Strike and Camouflage create the strongest deception-and-escape package in the documented roster. The 1.5-second snare value is specific to the October 1.1 patch.
  • Spear: Long line attacks let you punish a player who overextends without committing to point-blank range.
  • Pistols: Mid-range shots support constant movement and punish opponents who chase in a straight line.
  • Axes: Frenzy supplies a direct dash and a short attack-speed burst for finishing or forcing a defensive cooldown.
  • New mobility weapons: Claws, Twinblade and Throwing Daggers should be evaluated by their current movement and attack patterns rather than an inherited tier-list label.

A good PvP loadout normally pairs one weapon that starts an engagement with spells that cover its recovery window. Do not spend every mobility skill to enter; reserve at least one escape or invulnerability window for the opponent’s counterplay.

Best approach for bosses

Bosses reward consistent single-target uptime, reach and cast interruption. A weapon that deals slightly less damage but lets you continue attacking through a mechanic can finish the fight sooner than a melee burst that repeatedly forces you to disengage.

  • Spear: Maintain a long-range line and keep attacking while avoiding the boss’s close-range pattern.
  • Longbow: Charge during predictable openings, build up to three Focus stacks and use piercing shots when adds line up behind the boss.
  • Crossbow: Save Snapshot for a cast that must be interrupted; Rain of Bolts provides a snare when repositioning is the priority.
  • Pistols: Use their mid-range cadence when the arena repeatedly changes distance.
  • Sword, Axes, Reaper and Greatsword: Choose these for closer timing windows if you can read telegraphs and maintain uptime without standing in hazards.

Longbow’s fully charged shot can pierce up to two enemies, with each later hit dealing half the previous hit’s damage. That is a practical advantage when a boss summons adds in a line, not a reason to stand still through an unsafe mechanic.

Weapons for gathering resources

The equipment table gives several weapons explicit material or creature bonuses. Swap to the appropriate class before harvesting; the bonus is a utility reason to carry more than one weapon even when you have a preferred combat weapon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Resource or target Weapon Bonus
Vegetation Sword +25%
Wood Axes +25%
Wood Greatsword +25%
Minerals Mace +25%
Creatures Spear +25%

No comparable bonus is stated for Reaper, Whip, Slashers, Claws, Twinblade, Crossbow, Longbow, Daggers, Pistols or Throwing Daggers in the cited equipment excerpt. Do not infer a gathering bonus from a weapon’s appearance or attack animation.

Recipe gates and progression order

Several weapon upgrades are tied to specific V Blood carriers. The gate is the listed boss defeat, not simply reaching a character level.

Recipe Unlock condition
Iron Greatsword Defeat Tristan the Vampire Hunter
Iron Reaper Defeat Kriig the Undead General
Iron Claw Defeat Frostmaw the Mountain Terror
Iron Twinblade Defeat Gaius the Cursed Champion
Iron Whip Defeat Domina the Blade Dancer
Sanguine Whip Defeat Simon Belmont
Iron Slashers Defeat Jakira the Shadow Huntress
Longbow Defeat Lidia the Chaos Archer

The table shows notable recipe gates documented for the current roster, not a claim that these are the only progression requirements for every weapon tier.

How to choose a weapon without relying on a tier list

  1. Name the activity. Decide whether the weapon is for clearing, PvP, a boss, hunting or harvesting. A gathering bonus can outweigh a small combat difference during a resource trip.
  2. Choose your safe distance. Pick Sword, Axes, Mace, Greatsword, Daggers or Claws for close pressure; Spear, Reaper or Whip for extended melee reach; or Crossbow, Longbow, Pistols and Throwing Daggers for ranged or mid-range play.
  3. Identify the encounter’s failure condition. If casts must be stopped, Crossbow’s Snapshot matters. If you are surrounded, Sword’s Whirlwind or a control weapon matters. If contact is dangerous, range and mobility matter more than burst.
  4. Check your escape plan. A weapon with a dash, teleport, camouflage or displacement skill should be paired with a spell rotation that does not consume every escape at the start of a fight.
  5. Test the complete rotation. Practice the basic attack, first weapon skill, second weapon skill and spell transition together. Measure whether you can keep attacking after a dodge, not just the largest isolated tooltip number.
  6. Confirm the live patch. Balance changes can alter coefficients, snare durations, explosions and reworked skills. The October 1.1 references already changed Slashers and Pistols, so old videos may describe values that no longer apply.

Update 1.1 changes that affect weapon choices

Invaders of Oakveil adds Claws, Twinblades and Throwing Daggers, each intended to provide a distinct combat style. The update also adds weapon coatings and lets players merge and modify legendary weapons. Those systems make weapon selection more flexible: a weapon can be chosen for its attack pattern while coatings or legendary modifications address a build’s secondary need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two documented October 1.1 balance changes are especially important when reading older guides. Explosive Bullet’s explosion damage was reduced from 125% to 115%, and Fan the Hammer was reworked. Elusive Strike’s fading-snare duration was reduced from 2 seconds to 1.5 seconds. Always attach those numbers to the October 1.1 patch rather than presenting them as permanent values.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Calling one weapon “the best” without naming a mode: Replace the ranking with a use case. Sword’s all-round utility does not make it the best boss weapon for every player, and Slashers’ PvP tools do not automatically improve a farming run.
  • Comparing only physical-damage percentages: Include range, attack recovery, crowd control, interruption and escape time. A 70% projectile that launches and teleports can create more real uptime than a larger hit that is difficult to land.
  • Using an old snare or explosion value: Check the patch date. Slashers and Pistols both have documented 1.1 changes.
  • Confusing Daggers with Throwing Daggers: They are separate weapon types. Throwing Daggers are a new Update 1.1 style; the available documentation does not establish that they share Daggers’ skills.
  • Ignoring recipe bosses: If an Iron weapon is missing, verify the corresponding V Blood defeat rather than assuming the recipe appears at a character level.
  • Mining, logging or hunting with the wrong class: Swap to Mace for minerals, Axes or Greatsword for wood, Sword for vegetation and Spear for creatures to use the listed +25% bonuses.
  • Building around an unverified coefficient: Mace, Reaper and the newer weapons do not have a complete unified numeric table in the available reference. Use current in-game tooltips before publishing or following a precision damage build.

Bottom line: the practical recommendations

Choose Sword if you want one dependable weapon for learning the game and handling mixed PvE. Choose Crossbow when safe range, snares and cast interruption are the priority. Choose Spear or Longbow for bosses that reward distance and predictable attack windows. Choose Slashers when PvP mobility, camouflage and burst control match your skill level. Axes and Greatsword are strong melee alternatives with different commitment levels, while Mace and Reaper excel when displacement and area control solve the encounter.

Update 1.1’s Claws, Twinblades and Throwing Daggers expand the roster rather than replacing those established roles. Test their current attack patterns, then select the weapon whose reach, escape options and control tools let you stay active in the specific fight you are preparing for.
