Godlike.Host offers hosted V Rising servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
If V Rising keeps using old rules after you edit a JSON file, the server is usually reading a different file, an override is taking precedence, or it was not fully restarted. A dedicated server loads shipped defaults first, then local settings from its active persistent-data path. Find that path, edit the correct file, check save-folder and command-line overrides, validate the JSON, and restart the server completely.
Why V Rising ignores an edited settings file
V Rising does not treat every copy of a settings file as equally authoritative. The dedicated server loads its shipped defaults and then looks for local overrides. Your effective configuration can therefore differ from the file you opened in Explorer.

Stunlock Studios describes this order as loading default files and then looking for local overrides. Work through the checks below in order. Each one eliminates a different source of stale behavior.
First identify what you are hosting
Private or LAN world
A private or LAN game is hosted by the game client. The host creates or loads the world from the in-game interface, so changing a dedicated-server installation folder will not affect that session. Close the world, confirm which profile or save you are loading, and make changes through the game’s available host or world settings where possible. If a friend is hosting, only that host’s world files matter.

Dedicated server
A dedicated server is a separate process, normally VRisingServer.exe, launched by a batch file, shortcut, service, or hosting panel. The process reads the files under its own persistent-data path. The remainder of this guide focuses on that setup.
Do not confuse a server that appears in the in-game browser with a dedicated server you control. A hosted listing may belong to a provider, while your local client still contains unrelated world files. Check the machine or panel that actually starts VRisingServer.exe.
Find the active persistent-data path
Do not assume that the folder containing VRisingServer.exe is the folder being used for saves. Open the server’s startup batch file or the command configured in your service or hosting panel and look for -persistentDataPath.
When no custom path is specified
On Windows, the default dedicated-server location is:

A service running under another account can therefore use a different LocalLow folder than the account you use to browse files. Check the service account before concluding that the default folder is empty or unused.

If the launch command contains a relative path such as -persistentDataPath .save-data, the server uses that directory as its persistent root. In this example, edit:
save-dataSettingsand expect saves under:
save-dataSavesA relative path is interpreted from the server’s working directory, which can differ when a service or control panel starts the process. An absolute path removes that ambiguity. If you run multiple servers on one host, separate persistent paths are essential so that settings and saves do not overlap; Stunlock specifically recommends a customized path for multi-server setups.

Confirm the path in the actual launch command
- Stop the server process.
- Open the batch file, shortcut properties, service definition, or hosting-panel startup command.
- Record the complete value following
-persistentDataPath, if present. - Resolve a relative path from the process working directory, not from a random installation folder.
- Open that root’s
SettingsandSavesfolders and make a backup before editing.
When a panel offers a file manager, use the path shown by the panel rather than searching the whole disk for similarly named files. Multiple installations, test instances, and old backups commonly produce several plausible ServerGameSettings.json files.
Use the right file for the setting

Put durable customizations in the persistent Settings folder. The VRisingServer_DataStreamingAssetsSettings directory contains shipped defaults; updates can replace those files, so edits there are not a reliable override. Treat StreamingAssets as a reference for the game’s default keys, not as the place for permanent server configuration.
Keep the file name and capitalization intact. Do not create a second extension such as ServerGameSettings.json.txt; Windows may hide the final extension in Explorer. Turning on “File name extensions” makes this mistake easy to spot.
Apply a change safely: the complete workflow
1. Make a backup
Copy the entire active Settings directory and the relevant save directory to a separate location. Keep the original filenames and note the time of the backup. This gives you a known-good rollback if the server fails to start or the world behaves unexpectedly. Include the save-folder settings, not just the base Settings folder.
2. Stop the server completely
Use the panel’s stop control or close the dedicated-server process and wait until it exits. Do not edit while the process is still running: a shutdown or autosave can write the old in-memory configuration back to disk. Check Task Manager or the panel status if necessary, and allow a few seconds for the save operation to finish.
3. Edit the correct JSON file
Open ServerHostSettings.json for host and network values, or ServerGameSettings.json for gameplay values. Preserve the existing key names, quotation marks, commas, braces, and value types. A Boolean must remain true or false; a number must not be quoted unless the original file uses a string. Avoid word-processor editors that insert smart quotes or other formatting characters.
4. Validate the JSON before launching
On Windows PowerShell, you can parse a file without starting the server:
Get-Content .save-dataSettingsServerGameSettings.json -Raw | ConvertFrom-JsonReplace the path with your actual persistent root and use ServerHostSettings.json when appropriate. A successful parse returns the object; a syntax error identifies a line or character to repair. A JSON validator can also catch trailing commas, duplicate punctuation, and mismatched braces. If you cannot identify the mistake, restore the backup rather than deleting keys at random.

5. Check for a save-folder copy
Look inside the selected save folder beneath the active Saves directory. If it contains its own ServerHostSettings.json or ServerGameSettings.json, that copy can override the base file. Back it up first, then either make the same change there or remove the conflicting copy so the base setting can apply. Confirm the save folder by matching its name to the -saveName value or the save selected by the server.
6. Check presets and difficulty selections
Review the configured GameSettingsPreset or difficulty preset. A preset can supply the individual gameplay keys it defines, making a manual value appear to “revert.” Choose the intended preset, then change only the keys that the preset leaves available, or use a custom preset if your server version supports one. Record the preset choice before changing individual values so you can reproduce the result.
7. Check command-line overrides
Read the startup command for parameters that take precedence over host settings:
-serverName-gamePort-queryPort-saveName-persistentDataPath
If the batch file sets one of these, change the command itself or remove the conflicting argument. Editing the JSON alone will not beat a value supplied at launch. A panel may generate these arguments from separate fields, so inspect both its visible settings and its raw startup command.
8. Save, start, and verify behavior
Save the file, start the server, and wait for the process to finish loading. Test the exact behavior you changed rather than relying only on a menu display. Keep a copy of the edited file and compare it with the active path if the result is still unexpected. Server logs can also reveal which file failed to parse or which value was rejected.
Why a restart is required
V Rising reads configuration during server startup. Editing a file while the process is running does not reliably reload it. A full stop followed by a new launch is required after a configuration change. A hosting panel may show an edited file immediately but apply it only after its next restart; use the panel’s stop and start controls instead of assuming an in-place refresh occurred.

A second copy can leave you connected to the unchanged server while the edited instance is stopped.
Settings that may not change on an existing world
Some values are tied to world data created at the first launch. The V Rising Wiki, last modified May 13, 2025, documents the following settings as potentially ineffective on an already-created world, even after the file is correct and the server has restarted:

Do not destroy a working save as a first troubleshooting step. Back it up, test ordinary reloadable settings first, and treat a new world as the last resort. The documented workaround is to create a custom preset containing the desired values and start a new server or world with that preset; the workaround is explicitly not fully tested, so preserve the original save before attempting it.
Before testing a new world, write down the old save name, persistent path, preset, ports, and passwords. Keep the old save directory untouched so you can switch back if the new-world test does not produce the expected result.
Read logs and verify the effective server
If the setting still appears stale, compare three items: the startup command, the active save name, and the server log generated by that launch. A successful connection does not prove that you edited the instance players joined. A second installation, an unexpected working directory, or a provider’s regenerated configuration can send the process elsewhere.
- Confirm the process start time matches your restart.
- Check that the command includes the persistent path and save name you expect.
- Look for JSON parse errors, rejected keys, or messages about loading defaults.
- Test a conspicuous, reversible value so the change is easy to observe.
- After stopping, verify that the edited file’s modified time changes only when you save it, not when an old process overwrites it.
Stunlock’s June 30, 2022 support guidance notes that malformed settings can break the Continue-game interface and that developers were working on clearer feedback about which file caused the problem. A broken menu is therefore another reason to validate every JSON file and restore a known-good copy.
Recover from a broken or unreadable configuration
Restore the last known-good files
Stop the server, replace the damaged JSON with your backup, and start again. This is safer than trying to reconstruct a long settings file manually. If only one value was changed, compare the backup and edited versions to identify the exact difference.

If a settings file in the global installation area is corrupted, move or rename it and use Steam’s “Verify Integrity of Game Files” command. Verification can restore shipped installation files.
Repair a save-folder file manually
Steam verification does not regenerate settings stored inside a save folder. For those files, restore your backup or repair the JSON yourself, validate it, and then restart. Keep save-folder backups separate from installation backups so an update cannot erase your only copy. Verification also cannot fix a wrong persistent path or a conflicting command-line argument.

Before moving a save, ask a provider whether it preserves both the base Settings folder and save-folder overrides, offers point-in-time restore, exposes logs, and performs a real stop/start. A low monthly price is not useful if you cannot retrieve the effective files or roll back an update. Do not assume a provider supports a newly released V Rising version until it confirms compatibility.

A fast checklist for “old settings” symptoms
- Am I changing a dedicated server, not a client-hosted private world?
- Does the launch command contain
-persistentDataPath, and am I editing that path? - Is the Windows account running the process the same account whose LocalLow folder I opened?
- Am I editing the persistent
Settingsfolder rather thanStreamingAssetsSettings? - Is the value in
ServerHostSettings.jsonorServerGameSettings.json? - Does the selected save folder contain a second copy that overrides the base file?
- Does a
GameSettingsPresetor difficulty preset control this key? - Does the batch file override it with
-serverName,-gamePort,-queryPort,-saveName, or another launch argument? - Does the file parse as valid JSON?
- Did I stop the process fully and restart it after saving?
- Does the log belong to the server instance players actually joined?
- Is the setting one of the world-creation values that may not update on an existing save?
If all checks pass and the behavior is still unchanged, compare the running server’s logs and active save name with the path and files you edited. That comparison usually exposes a second installation, an unexpected working directory, a different Windows service account, or a save-folder override.
Bottom line
Most “V Rising settings are not changing” cases come from editing the wrong persistent path or an overridden copy, followed by incomplete restarts and invalid JSON. Identify the server process and persistent root first, use the correct settings file, check save-folder, preset, and command-line precedence, validate the JSON, and restart fully. If only a world-creation setting refuses to change, protect the save and consider a custom-preset workflow on a new world only as a final option.

Do I need to restart V Rising after editing JSON?
