V Rising reads a multiplayer password on the server, not from the joining player’s local settings. On a dedicated server, check the active ServerHostSettings.json, then check for a VR_PASSWORD environment variable or -password launch argument that overrides the file. Save valid JSON, restart the entire server process, and verify that you are connecting to the same server instance you edited. If the server is offline, shows Unknown Status, or is a different listing, changing the password cannot fix the connection.
What “password not working” means in V Rising
Several different failures look like a bad password. Separating them first prevents you from repeatedly changing a setting that the client never reaches.

A password only controls authentication after a running server has loaded its settings and the client has reached that server. It cannot bring an offline process online, repair corrupted configuration, or redirect a client from one instance to another.
Identify how the world is hosted
The correct file and control panel depend on the hosting model. Identify this before editing anything.

Locally hosted private world
Start V Rising and open Load Game. Select the world and use Go to Directory. That command opens the save location used by the selected world; it is safer than searching your drive for every file named ServerHostSettings.json. Back up the entire save folder before making changes.
If the password was configured through the game’s host settings, close the world, reopen the active directory, and verify the generated server settings there. A different save can have a different password even on the same computer.
Self-hosted Steam dedicated server
Use the dedicated-server installation associated with Steam AppID 1829350. Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions place Windows settings under the server data directory, while the exact active location depends on the command used to start the server. The installation can contain a template settings file as well as a save-data copy, so do not assume the first search result is the live one.
Rented or panel-managed server
The hosting panel may generate or overwrite ServerHostSettings.json. Make the change in the panel’s server-settings interface when possible, save it, and use the panel’s own restart control. Editing a downloaded copy while the panel writes another copy will not change the running instance. Panel labels and file layouts differ by provider; the launch command and logs remain the definitive evidence.
How V Rising chooses the password
For a dedicated server, the normal setting is the Password property in ServerHostSettings.json. Stunlock describes this value as text that can be set or left empty. An empty value means the server has no password requirement; it does not mean that a client should submit an arbitrary password.

The file is not necessarily the final authority. The server can receive a password through the VR_PASSWORD=<password> environment variable or through the -password "<password>" launch argument. Treat these as overrides: if either is present, the process may ignore the value you changed in JSON. Remove stale variables and arguments or change them to the intended value, and keep the password in one place while troubleshooting.

}The example shows the property format only. Preserve every other setting in the real file, and use ordinary JSON double quotes. Do not add comments, trailing commas, or shell syntax inside the JSON document.
Step-by-step fix for a rejected password
- Stop the server completely. Use the normal stop command or panel control and wait for the process to exit. Editing while the process is running can leave you testing an old in-memory value or allow the process to rewrite the file.
- Make a backup. Copy the active save folder and the settings files to a separate location. Keep the backup until players can connect and the world loads normally.
- Find the active data path. Inspect the startup script, shortcut, service definition, or panel command for
-persistentDataPathand-saveName. These arguments identify where the process reads persistent data and which world it opens. Follow those values to the corresponding settings file rather than editing a template in the installation directory. - Inspect
Password. Open the activeServerHostSettings.jsonin a text editor that preserves plain UTF-8 text. Set one intended value, or leave it empty if the server should be public. Avoid invisible leading or trailing spaces when copying the password. - Check process-level overrides. Search the startup script, service configuration, container definition, scheduled task, and hosting panel for
VR_PASSWORDand-password. Remove conflicting entries, or make every active entry match the JSON value. Also check for a second launch script that starts another server process. - Validate the JSON. Confirm that braces, commas, quotation marks, and property names are intact. A missing comma or brace can stop the server from loading settings at all. If you are uncertain, restore the backed-up known-good file and change only the password line.
- Save and restart. Start the server through the same command or panel that normally runs it. Wait until the process finishes loading before testing. A restart is required; changing a file does not change settings already loaded by a running process.
- Test with one controlled client. Have the host and one friend use the exact same listing or endpoint. Enter the password manually once, then try a fresh client session if the first attempt used a cached listing. Record whether the server is listed, its status, and the exact error.
If this sequence succeeds for one client but not another, the remaining problem is likely client-side session, build, or network-specific rather than the server password itself.
Make sure you edited the file the process actually reads
Multiple copies are the most common reason a “correct” password appears to fail. A typical setup can contain a default or template settings file in the installation, a settings file inside the selected save folder, and a user or panel override. Only one combination is used by the running process.
Trace the launch command
Open the script or service that starts the server and note -persistentDataPath, -saveName, and any password-related arguments. If the command points to a custom persistent path, the active file will not be under the default user directory. If -saveName selects another world, editing a different world’s file has no effect.

Check for duplicate processes
Ensure only the intended V Rising server is running. Two instances can expose similar names while using different ports, save names, or passwords. Stop both, start one through the known command, and verify its log and listening endpoint before testing.
Use the panel as the source of truth when applicable
On managed hosting, a panel may regenerate settings at startup. Change the password in the panel, apply or save the configuration, and restart from that same interface. If the panel offers a file editor, confirm that it is editing the save-data path named in the startup command.
Repair malformed JSON and the “Unknown Status” state
Stunlock identifies manually edited ServerHostSettings.JSON and ServerGameSettings.JSON files as a likely cause of Unknown Status. The capitalization of the extension is not important to JSON, but the syntax is: one missing comma, brace, or quote can prevent the server from reading its settings.
Safe repair order
- Stop the server and copy both JSON files and the save folder.
- Compare each file with a backup from before the problem appeared.
- If no backup exists, restore a known-good version and reapply settings one property at a time, starting with the password.
- Check that every object opens and closes with matching braces, every property uses double quotes, and adjacent properties are separated by commas.
- Start the server and read the first configuration-related errors in the log before attempting a client connection.
Steam’s Verify integrity of game files can repair global installation files, including files in VRISING_DataStreamingAssetsSettings. Stunlock specifically notes that settings files stored in save folders cannot be regenerated by verification. Therefore, verification may repair a damaged installation template but will not recreate a corrupted per-world server settings file; restore that file from backup or rebuild it carefully.
When the password is not the real problem
Do not treat every join failure as authentication. Work through these checks when the server is absent, has an unknown status, or rejects a direct connection before showing a password prompt.

Confirm the process and endpoint
Verify that the server process remains running after startup and that the client is using the intended listing or address. Compare the endpoint in the launch configuration with the address shared with friends. A visible listing can be stale or can belong to another instance with the same or a similar name.
Check listing controls
Review the server’s ListOnEOS and/or ListOnSteam settings. The appropriate listing service depends on how clients are searching. If both are disabled, the server may be reachable only by a direct method supported by the hosting setup. Community advice about exact paths or required combinations of listing flags can vary by launch method and game version, so use the active configuration and server log rather than assuming a universal location.

Check firewall and port forwarding
Allow the server executable through the host firewall and verify that router port-forwarding rules point to the correct machine and local port. If the host is behind another router, carrier-grade NAT, or a restrictive network, inbound connections may fail even with a correct password. Test from the same local network and from an external connection to distinguish a local routing issue.
Check client and server builds
Bring the client and server to compatible current builds. A version mismatch can prevent a join before password validation and can present a generic connection error. Restart the Steam client after an update so it does not continue using an older running process.

A reset is useful when you cannot determine which override or file is active, but it must protect the world save.

- Stop every V Rising server process.
- Back up the complete save directory and all settings files.
- Temporarily remove custom
VR_PASSWORDand-passwordentries from the launch environment. - Move the active settings file aside and start with a newly generated or known-good file appropriate to that server version.
- Confirm that the server starts, appears with a normal status, and accepts a connection without a custom password if that is the intended temporary test.
- Stop the server, add the password in the JSON file only, restart, and test with the host and one client.
- Reintroduce other custom settings gradually, restarting and testing after each group of changes.
Never delete the save folder as a troubleshooting shortcut. A settings reset is reversible; deleting world data may not be.
Choose the remedy that matches your hosting model

A managed host can reduce local firewall, port-forwarding, and uptime work, but it adds provider-specific controls. When a panel and a file disagree, the panel’s startup configuration and resulting log show which value wins.
What to collect before contacting support
If the password still fails after confirming the active file, overrides, valid JSON, process, and endpoint, provide evidence rather than only reporting “wrong password.” Stunlock’s troubleshooting guidance identifies the following as useful:
- The relevant
Player.logand dedicated-server logs. - A copy of the active settings files and the save files, with passwords and other sensitive values redacted where appropriate.
- The complete launch command, including
-persistentDataPath,-saveName, and any password arguments. - The server and client version/build information.
- A description of whether the server is listed, has Unknown Status, or fails only at the password prompt.
- Windows
DxDiagoutput and crash dumps when the process exits or crashes.
On Windows, player and save data are under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRising. Dedicated-server logs are commonly under the corresponding VRisingServer directory. Stunlock lists info@playvrising.com for Steam support. Redact the actual password before sending files or screenshots.
