A V Rising server missing from the browser is not necessarily offline. The server list can fail to load private servers, so first test Direct Connect. If you need browser discovery, verify the server is running the current 1.1.x dedicated-server branch, that the active ServerHostSettings.json has both listing flags enabled, and that its UDP game and query ports are allowed through the host firewall and forwarded to the correct machine. Malformed JSON produces a different symptom—often Unknown Status or missing local saves—and must be repaired separately.
What a missing server entry actually tells you
The server browser is a discovery mechanism, not a definitive health check. Stunlock Studios notes that the list fetches thousands of servers and can fail to load every private server matching a search. A server can therefore be running and reachable even while no row appears in the browser.

- Is the server reachable? Test Direct Connect with the host’s public IP address and configured port.
- Is it discoverable? Check listing flags, the active configuration file, UDP firewall rules, router forwarding, and search filters.
Those paths overlap but are not identical. Direct Connect may work while browser discovery is delayed or incomplete. Conversely, a visible listing does not fix a blocked game port; players still need a reachable server.
Can friends connect if the server is missing?
Yes. If Direct Connect succeeds, the absent browser row is a discovery problem rather than proof that the dedicated server is down. Give friends the public IP address and the configured game Port, not the query port. If Direct Connect fails too, troubleshoot the running process, game port, firewall, and router before spending time on search filters.

1. Confirm the dedicated server is running the right build
Use the current dedicated-server branch
The current official PC instructions cover the 1.1.x dedicated-server branch. Install the dedicated server through Steam’s Tools section; the download is free. Start the server executable from its installation directory rather than launching it from an unrelated working folder.
Protect the supplied launch file
The installation includes an example batch file. Copy or rename that example before editing it. Updates can overwrite the supplied file, so keeping your edited copy separate prevents a routine update from removing your launch options.

Confirm the process before changing networking
Start the copied batch file or executable and confirm that the server process remains running. If it exits immediately, listing settings cannot help: resolve the startup failure first, then continue with configuration and network checks. A newly started server may also need a few minutes before it is indexed.
When an update has just been installed, make sure the executable, copied batch file and settings belong to the same installation. Running a batch file from an old directory can make every later edit appear ineffective because you are configuring one server while launching another.
2. Find the settings file the server is really loading
V Rising uses two JSON files for the settings relevant to this problem. Editing a file that is not active has no effect, which is one of the most common reasons a seemingly correct fix fails.

The files in VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ are defaults. Local overrides normally live under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings. If the launch command includes -persistentDataPath, the server uses that supplied location instead; look for the Settings subfolder beneath the custom path.

- Inspect the copied batch file or service definition for
-persistentDataPath. - If that option exists, open the custom path’s
Settingsfolder and work there. - If it does not, check the normal local override path first.
- Use the installation defaults only when no local override has been created or when restoring a clean file.
- Stop the server before editing, save a backup of both JSON files, then restart it after each controlled change.
Keep the host and game files together when backing them up. A valid host file paired with a damaged game file can still produce Unknown Status, and restoring only one file may leave the underlying problem in place. Always verify the path used by the launch command before replacing anything.
3. Enable both listing registrations
Open the active ServerHostSettings.json and check the listing flags. Set both registrations to true:

"ListOnEOS": true,
"ListOnSteam": trueListOnEOS registers the server with Epic Online Services, while ListOnSteam registers it for Steam’s server-list features. The V Rising client looks for servers on EOS by default, so leaving ListOnEOS disabled can hide a server even when Steam registration is enabled. Enabling both avoids relying on only one directory.
Give the server a distinctive name
Set a custom server name in the same host-settings file. A unique name makes it easier to recognize the correct row after selecting Display all Servers & Settings, especially when several servers use similar default names.
Keep the JSON syntax valid
JSON is strict: property names and string values need double quotes, Boolean values must be lowercase true or false, and trailing commas are invalid. Make one change at a time and preserve the file’s existing structure. A syntax error can prevent settings from loading and lead to Unknown Status rather than a simple listing omission.
Do not paste settings from a different version without checking the surrounding structure. The safe approach is to copy the existing file, change only the required value, save it, and restart. If the symptom changes from “not listed” to “Unknown Status,” stop making edits and restore the last known-good copy.
4. Verify the game and query ports
In ServerHostSettings.json, identify the configured Port and QueryPort. Do not assume the example values are still active after changing the file or launch setup.

Stunlock’s guidance is explicit: to show up on the server list, both the specified query port and game port must be open in the firewall and forwarded on the router. Forwarding only the game port is sufficient for a setup that does not require server-list discovery, but it does not satisfy the browser-listing requirement.

Use the configured values, not remembered defaults
- Copy the numeric
Portvalue from the active host-settings file. - Copy the numeric
QueryPortvalue from that same file. - Create or verify inbound UDP rules for both values in the operating-system firewall.
- Create router port-forwarding rules for both values, using UDP and targeting the server computer’s current LAN address.
- Save the router and firewall changes, then restart the dedicated server.
A forwarding rule aimed at another computer, an old LAN address, or a different port will not help, even if the rule appears enabled. Keep a written copy of the two active values while configuring the router so the game and query rules cannot be accidentally swapped.
5. Check the host firewall and router together
Host firewall
Allow the dedicated-server executable through the host firewall, or create inbound UDP rules for the configured Port and QueryPort. If the firewall asks whether the application may communicate on private or public networks, choose the profiles that match the network on which the server is operating. Apply the rule to the actual executable started by your batch file.

Router forwarding
Open the router’s port-forwarding page and create one rule per configured port, both using UDP. Set the destination to the server machine’s LAN address. If that address changes, the forwarding rule can silently point to the wrong device; reserve the address or update the rule before testing again.
What each opening accomplishes
- The game
Portcarries player traffic and is essential for outside players to connect. - The
QueryPortlets Steam-list features query the server and is required for reliable browser discovery. - The firewall controls traffic at the server computer; the router controls traffic arriving from the internet. Both layers must permit the same configured values.
Change one layer at a time and restart after the final change. This creates a useful test order: first confirm the process, then the game port, then the query port and listing flags. If Direct Connect starts working after the game-port rule is corrected but the browser remains empty, concentrate on the query port, registration flags and indexing delay instead of undoing the working game-port rule.
6. Restart, wait, and search without restrictive filters
After changing JSON, firewall rules, or forwarding, stop and restart the dedicated server so it registers with the new settings. Stunlock says a recently launched server can take a few minutes to appear; an immediate search is not a reliable failure test.
- Open V Rising and choose Online Play.
- Select Find Servers.
- Use Display all Servers & Settings so restrictive filters do not exclude the entry.
- Search for the custom server name you configured.
- Allow several minutes after a fresh launch before concluding that discovery has failed.
If the server appears only after broadening the search, the earlier issue was a filter rather than hosting or networking. There is no published guaranteed propagation time beyond Stunlock’s guidance to wait a few minutes, so avoid treating a specific number of seconds as a failure threshold.
7. Use Direct Connect when the browser is incomplete
Direct Connect is the official fallback when the list has not loaded a private server. It tests reachability without depending on the browser’s directory response.
- Choose Online Play.
- Choose Find Servers in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Display all Servers & Settings.
- Choose Direct Connect.
- Enter the hosting dashboard’s public IP address and the server’s configured game port in
IP:Portform.
A successful Direct Connect confirms that the server can be reached even if its browser entry is absent. If it fails, recheck the game-port value, UDP forwarding, the host firewall, and whether the process is still running. For a managed host, use the public address and port shown in that provider’s dashboard; for self-hosting, use the public address of the internet connection serving the router.
8. Repair “Unknown Status” and missing local saves
Unknown Status points to a different class of problem. Stunlock identifies corrupted ServerHostSettings.JSON and/or ServerGameSettings.JSON as the likely cause, with manual editing the common trigger. The same corruption can make local saves or settings appear to be missing.
Restore a clean configuration
- Stop the server.
- Back up the active Settings folder, including both JSON files.
- Restore valid copies of
ServerHostSettings.JSONandServerGameSettings.JSONfrom a known-good backup or the supplied defaults. - Reapply only the necessary values: server name, listing flags, ports and gameplay choices.
- Check that the files remain valid JSON, then start the server and test again.
Change one setting at a time after recovery. If another person’s server shows Unknown Status, the likely explanation is that its owner is not currently hosting; it is not evidence that your own files are corrupt.

9. Diagnose by symptom

This symptom split prevents a common mistake: repeatedly changing listing flags when the executable is not running, or repeatedly changing ports when the browser alone is failing. Record whether Direct Connect works before each new change; that single observation tells you whether to focus on reachability or discovery.

Self-hosting gives you direct control over the executable, JSON files, firewall and router. It also makes every layer your responsibility: updates can replace supplied files, a changed LAN address can invalidate forwarding, and malformed JSON can stop settings from loading.
Managed V Rising server hosting removes most router and host-firewall work by providing a hosted machine and dashboard controls. Stunlock specifically names PocketHost as a managed rental option. It does not eliminate configuration checks: you still need the correct server name, listing options, ports and a valid settings file, and you must use the provider’s public address and port for Direct Connect. Choose self-hosting when you can administer the network and want full local control; choose managed hosting when router access or continuous administration is the constraint. Pricing and availability depend on the provider and should be checked in its current dashboard rather than assumed from a generic guide.

Why does Steam not show my server while EOS does?
The client looks for servers on EOS by default, while Steam listing features depend on Steam registration and the query port. Set both ListOnEOS and ListOnSteam to true, then verify that the configured QueryPort is allowed through the firewall and forwarded on the router.
Should I forward the game port or query port?
Forward both when you want browser discovery. The game Port carries player traffic; the QueryPort supports Steam server-list queries. Use the exact values in the active host-settings file and the UDP protocol specified by the documentation.
Where should I edit settings on Windows?
Start with %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings. If the launch command contains -persistentDataPath, use that custom path’s Settings subfolder instead. The installation’s VRisingServer_DataStreamingAssetsSettings directory contains defaults, not necessarily the live override.
How long should I wait for a new listing?
Stunlock says a recently launched server can take a few minutes to appear. Search with Display all Servers & Settings while waiting, and use Direct Connect rather than repeatedly restarting if friends need to join immediately.
What if I can connect directly but nobody else can?
Check that friends are using the public IP and game Port, not a local address. Then verify the game port is forwarded by UDP to the correct LAN address and allowed by the host firewall. A local connection alone does not prove the router is forwarding outside traffic.

Is Unknown Status the same as an absent listing?
No. An absent listing can be caused by incomplete browser results, filters or registration and may coexist with a working server. Unknown Status, especially after manual edits, points to corrupt host or game JSON; restore valid files before changing network settings again.

- Dedicated server installed from Steam Tools and running the current 1.1.x branch.
- Copied launch batch file used instead of editing the update-managed example in place.
- Executable started from its installation directory.

Can friends connect if my V Rising server is not in the browser?
Yes. Use Online Play, Find Servers, Display all Servers & Settings, and Direct Connect with the public IP and configured game Port. A working Direct Connect proves the server is reachable even if browser discovery is incomplete.
Which V Rising ports must I forward?
Forward both the configured UDP Port and UDP QueryPort to the server machine when you want server-list discovery. Allow the same values through the host firewall. The game Port is used for player traffic; QueryPort supports Steam list queries.
Why did my settings changes do nothing?

A missing V Rising browser entry does not automatically mean the server is offline. Confirm the 1.1.x server process, edit the active settings path, enable both EOS and Steam listing, and open the exact UDP game and query ports in the firewall and router. Restart and allow a few minutes for indexing. If the browser still omits the server, use Direct Connect with the public IP and game port. Treat Unknown Status separately by restoring valid JSON files before making further changes.
