To become an administrator on a V Rising dedicated server, add your Steam ID to <PersistentDataPath>/Settings/adminlist.txt, enable Console Enabled in Options > General, open the in-game console with the tilde/backtick key, and run adminauth. The server must be running the file you edited. After authentication, you can use moderation commands such as kick, banuser, bancharacter, banned, and unban.
This guide covers the current PC dedicated-server workflow: configuration files, administrator and moderation commands, RCON, ports, startup, managed hosting, backups, and common connection failures. Command names outside the official list can change between builds, so use list in the running console as the final authority.

Become an administrator in V Rising
V Rising does not grant admin rights merely because you own the server or launched the executable. The player’s Steam ID must first be allowlisted in adminlist.txt, then that player must authenticate in the game console with adminauth.
1. Find the server’s persistent Settings folder
Locate the Settings directory under the server’s configured persistent-data path. The full path is:

<PersistentDataPath>/Settings/If you start the server with -persistentDataPath, that argument determines where the server stores its Settings and Saves folders. Using a separate persistent-data path for each server prevents settings, administrator lists, and worlds from being mixed when several instances share one machine.
This distinction matters when troubleshooting. The templates in the installation directory are not necessarily the files the live process is reading. Write down the exact launch command or batch file used to start each instance, then follow its persistent path to locate the active permissions and save files.

- Open or create
adminlist.txtin the persistentSettingsfolder. - Enter the administrator’s Steam ID, with one Steam ID per line.
- Save the file using plain text. Do not add JSON syntax, commas, or a username in place of the ID.
Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions state that adding a Steam ID can be done without restarting the server. If the change is not recognized, confirm that you edited the active persistent-data directory rather than the installation defaults, then reconnect and authenticate again.
Keep this file restricted to people who should have full administrative authority. An administrator can moderate players and may have access to powerful debug or convenience commands. Maintain a separate copy of the file with your server records so a migration does not accidentally remove the allowlist.
3. Enable and open the client console
- Start V Rising and open Options > General.
- Turn on Console Enabled.
- Join the dedicated server.
- Press the tilde/backtick key (
~or`, depending on keyboard layout) to open the console. - Enter
adminauthand submit it without a slash.
Authentication applies to the current session. Re-authenticate after reconnecting if administrative commands are rejected. If adminauth fails, check the Steam ID character by character, verify the file location, and make sure the server is reading the same persistent path you edited.
Commands are typed as console words, not chat commands. Do not prefix them with /. If a command appears to do nothing, first verify that the console is open and that adminauth completed for the current connection.

Which V Rising commands are available?
Type list in the enabled client console to display commands available in the running build. This is safer than relying on an old command list because debug and convenience commands can change with updates. Commands are entered as plain words, without a leading slash.

Use the command’s in-game help to confirm argument order and target identifiers before acting on a live player. Account and character bans are not interchangeable, so select the command that matches the moderation outcome you intend. After a ban, run banned to verify that the entry was recorded.

Community-reported convenience and debug commands
Current secondary references commonly mention commands such as teleporttoplayer and give. Treat these as version-sensitive rather than guaranteed features: run list, inspect the in-game help, and test on a disposable world before using them on an established community server. Only use them where you have explicit server authority.
Debug commands can change the state of a world in ways that are difficult to reverse. Make a save backup before testing them, and tell players when administrative tools are being used. A command that existed in one build may be renamed, removed, or restricted in another.

Editing bans manually
Console bans are written to banlist.txt in the persistent Settings directory. You can edit that file manually, but stop the server first when making direct file changes unless the documentation for your build says otherwise. Keep a backup before removing entries, and preserve the identifier format already used in the file.
Never edit the copy under the installation templates and assume it changes a running world. Confirm the persistent path, make the change there, and restart or reconnect as appropriate. Retain an export of the old file if you are cleaning up historical bans.
Configure V Rising’s server JSON files safely
V Rising separates hosting and network options from gameplay rules:

Default templates are supplied in VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. Stunlock recommends copying those templates into the server’s local persistent Settings directory and editing the copies instead of modifying installation defaults. Updates can replace files under the installation directory, while persistent overrides are designed to survive maintenance.

A malformed value or an edit to the wrong file can make troubleshooting much harder. If the process fails to start after a change, restore the last known-good copy and then reapply changes individually.
Use a separate persistent path for every instance
Start each server with its own -persistentDataPath value when multiple servers share a host. This keeps each instance’s JSON files, adminlist.txt, banlist.txt, and saves separate. It also makes migration and backup jobs predictable because one path contains one world and its associated permissions.

Separate paths also prevent an administrator list or ban list from one community being applied to another. Name directories clearly, document the matching port pair, and include the launch file in your backup documentation.
Start a dedicated V Rising server
The V Rising Dedicated Server application is distributed through Steam’s Tools section. Clicking Launch in Steam may open a documentation link rather than start the server process. For an actual server, launch VRisingServer.exe from the installation directory.
Create a durable startup file
- Open the dedicated-server installation directory.
- Copy
start_server_example.batto a new file with your own name, such asstart_my_server.bat. - Edit the copy to set the server name, persistent-data path, and any required launch arguments.
- Run your copied batch file, not the example file.
The example batch file can be restored by an update, so customising a copy avoids losing your name and launch arguments. Keep the batch file and the persistent-data directory documented together for future migrations.
After starting, allow the process time to create its local folders and verify that the expected Settings and Saves directories appear under the selected persistent path. Test a local connection before inviting outside players; this separates startup problems from router and firewall problems.
Set the correct ports and firewall rules
V Rising uses two UDP ports for a server listed in the Steam server browser:

The examples are not universal defaults for every installation. Read the actual values in your active ServerHostSettings.json and forward those exact UDP ports through the router and host firewall. Stunlock’s current 1.1.x PC documentation lists a technically supported MaxConnectedUsers maximum of 128; that is a software limit, not a promise of performance, bandwidth, or low latency.
Do not confuse the query port with the port players use for game traffic. Opening only the query port can make a server appear in a browser while joins fail. Conversely, opening only the game port supports direct connection but does not provide the normal browser-listing path.
Browser-listed server
- Choose unused UDP values for
PortandQueryPort. - Allow
VRisingServer.exethrough the operating system firewall. - Create router port-forwarding rules for both configured UDP ports to the server’s private LAN address.
- Restart the server and confirm that the external address and port are reachable from outside the local network.
Stunlock specifically advises allowing the server program through the firewall when other players need to connect. Do not publish a private bind address as the public connection address.

Direct connection
For direct connection rather than Steam server-browser listing, Stunlock says forwarding only the configured game port is sufficient. You still need a firewall rule for that UDP port and must give players the correct public address and port.
Use RCON for remote administration
RCON is separate from the in-game console. It is password-protected remote control with a deliberately limited command set; it does not expose every in-game administrator action.

}A password is required. The documented example uses TCP port 25575, but the RCON port can be changed to any valid TCP port that is not already occupied. If remote access is needed, restrict the firewall rule to trusted source addresses instead of exposing RCON broadly.
RCON uses TCP, unlike the game and query ports. Record the protocol separately in firewall rules, use a strong unique password, and avoid reusing the player-facing server password. If your provider offers an internal RCON connection, prefer it over exposing the port to the public Internet.

Use RCON for announcements, controlled restarts, and basic metadata. Use the authenticated in-game console for player moderation and other commands that are not included in the official RCON list. Connect first and run help rather than assuming a command from another game’s RCON implementation exists here.
Protect saves and plan recovery
Before changing JSON settings, installing mods, moving a server, or editing permission files, copy the complete save directory from the active persistent-data path. A backup should include the world files and the surrounding directory structure, not only a single recent file.
Stop the server before copying live save data when practical. Label archives with the server name and date, and store at least one copy outside the machine that hosts the live world. Test a restore periodically; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Automatic save retention
V Rising documents AutoSaveSmartKeep for retaining selected saves across time windows and AutoSaveCount for removing older saves after that retention evaluation. These settings can reduce clutter, but they are not a replacement for independent backups. Store at least one copy outside the live server directory and periodically verify that it can be restored.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting provides direct control over executable arguments, JSON files, console access, firewall rules, and backups. A managed service reduces operating-system and network work but adds dependence on the provider’s panel, regions, retention policy, and support process.

Stunlock’s hosting guide names PocketHost as a managed option with status, basic settings, logs, configuration files, restart/update controls, and permission management. Verify current pricing, server regions, retention, and terms directly before choosing any provider. A managed plan is convenient, but you should still download your own saves and retain copies of administrator and ban lists.
Troubleshoot common administration and connection failures
“adminauth” does nothing or is rejected
- Confirm Console Enabled is on in Options > General.
- Check that the Steam ID is in
adminlist.txt, one ID per line. - Verify that the file is under the active
<PersistentDataPath>/Settings/, not only underStreamingAssets/Settings/. - Reconnect and run
adminauthagain. - After an update, run
listand check the command spelling available in that build.
The server is not visible in the browser
- Read the active
PortandQueryPortvalues instead of assuming27015and27016. - Forward both values as UDP ports to the server’s private address.
- Allow
VRisingServer.exethrough the local firewall. - Check that the server is bound to the correct local interface and that the router forwards to the current LAN address.
- Use direct connection testing to distinguish a query-port listing problem from a game-port connectivity problem.
Players can see the server but cannot join
- Confirm the game UDP port is forwarded, not only the query port.
- Check that the server process is listening on the configured address and port.
- Review firewall logs and router rules for protocol mismatches; these ports are UDP.
- Make sure players are using the public address, not the server’s private LAN address.
RCON will not connect
- Confirm
Enabledis set totrueand the client uses the exact configured TCP port. - Use the configured password and keep it different from the in-game server password.
- Allow the RCON TCP port through the firewall only for trusted sources.
- Run

Self-hosting offers direct control over files, launch arguments, networking, and backups but requires maintenance. Managed hosting reduces setup work and may provide status, logs, configuration, restart, update, and permission controls.
