Merciless is a loot-and-PvP ruleset, not a difficulty level. V Rising’s difficulty presets are Relaxed, Normal, and Brutal; a server can select a ruleset and a difficulty separately. Choosing Merciless changes what happens when players die and whether castles can be seized with Castle Keys. Choosing a difficulty preset changes gameplay modifiers such as enemy damage, V Blood health, loot, and durability drain.
What “Merciless” means in V Rising
Merciless refers to a ruleset. In the descriptions available for the setting, it is a full-loot ruleset: bloodbound equipment is turned off, so items drop when a player dies, and players can use Castle Keys to seize enemy castles. This is a substantial change to the consequences of PvP, not simply a harder version of the game.

Secondary guides describe Merciless alongside standard PvP and PvE rulesets. Because the available description of Merciless comes from secondary sources rather than an official rules reference, check the current in-game rules text for the exact behavior available in your game build before launching a long-running world.
What full loot changes for players
With bloodbound equipment off, death can cost more than carried consumables or resources: the stated rule is that items drop. That makes fights riskier, and raises the value of planning a recovery route, coordinating with allies, and deciding what to carry when entering contested areas. The ability to seize a rival castle with Castle Keys also makes castle security and the consequences of losing a fight part of the ruleset’s appeal and risk.

Those rules are separate from enemy strength. A server can use a demanding difficulty preset without choosing Merciless, or choose Merciless without using Brutal. Difficulty is primarily a question of how tough the world’s enemies and encounters are; Merciless is a question of how players interact and what they can lose or take.
Merciless versus Relaxed, Normal, and Brutal
V Rising 1.0 introduced three main server difficulty presets: Relaxed, Normal, and Brutal. The official 1.0 patch-notes description says the starting-server difficulty selection changes enemy power and how deadly environmental effects are. The preset is therefore not a synonym for PvE or PvP, and it does not by itself define full-loot death rules.

That distinction matters when a server host, guide, or configuration file uses the word “preset.” A setting called Game Settings Preset in startup options may load a broad ruleset such as StandardPvP or StandardPvE. It should not be assumed to select Relaxed, Normal, or Brutal. Likewise, selecting Merciless does not mean the server is automatically on Brutal.
How the difficulty presets compare
BerryByte publishes the following preset modifier table. Values are multipliers relative to the listed Normal value of 1.0. They show the direction and scale of selected changes, but do not by themselves explain every encounter or environmental effect.

For example, an enemy-damage multiplier of 1.4 means the table lists enemy damage at 1.4 times the Normal reference, while a V Blood health multiplier of 0.8 puts that listed value below the Normal reference. These are preset values reported by BerryByte, not a promise that every boss, enemy, or environmental hazard will follow only those figures. The official 1.0 description also identifies environmental effects as part of difficulty, while the table above does not provide a separate environmental-effect row.
Do not substitute other boss figures sometimes repeated in summaries for this table. One untraceable summary claims different boss and enemy percentages, including boss level changes; those numbers are not established by the cited material here. For a specific server build, use the live game’s preset values or its actual generated configuration rather than treating an unattributed multiplier list as authoritative.

How to choose the right combination
Choose a ruleset for the social contract
Start by deciding whether the group wants the Merciless consequences: item drops on death and the possibility of castle seizure. Those rules affect player behavior, the value of an unsuccessful fight, and the level of protection a castle provides. If the group wants PvP without those full-loot and castle-taking terms, choose a different ruleset rather than trying to make the server “less difficult.” If the group wants PvE, choose an appropriate PvE ruleset; the difficulty preset remains a separate selection.
Choose difficulty for encounter pressure
Relaxed is the lower-pressure option in the published modifier table, with reduced enemy and V Blood damage and lower V Blood health than Normal. Normal is the reference setting in that table. Brutal raises enemy and V Blood damage and V Blood health, while the same table lists higher loot and a lower durability-drain multiplier. These are changes to different parts of the experience, so “harder” does not mean every value moves in the same direction.

For a mixed-experience group, settle on the difficulty the least experienced regular players can enjoy, then separately decide whether Merciless rules are acceptable to everyone who will join. For a group that explicitly wants higher encounter pressure, Brutal is the relevant difficulty choice; it does not automatically turn on full-loot PvP. Server owners should communicate both choices before characters are created, since players may make different preparation and risk decisions under Merciless than under ordinary PvP or PvE rules.
Changing settings on a hosted server
For a new world, the game’s server setup flow exposes the difficulty selection among the main starting choices and places the ruleset selection under Advanced Game Settings → Select Ruleset. For an already-running dedicated server, published hosting instructions disagree about the exact configuration key and file used to set difficulty. That means there is no safe universal JSON edit to copy from the names alone.
- Identify the server build and host interface. Record whether this is a locally managed dedicated server or a hosted server panel, and note the game/server version shown by the host. Configuration names found in guides may refer to different builds or panel implementations.
- Back up the current settings before editing. Save a copy of the host’s current configuration and note the world’s existing ruleset and difficulty. This gives you a way to restore the previous configuration if the server fails to start or loads different settings.
- Use the host’s documented difficulty control when available. Look for a control specifically described as the difficulty preset—Relaxed, Normal, or Brutal—rather than a broad Game Settings Preset such as StandardPvP or StandardPvE. A broad startup preset and difficulty preset are not interchangeable.
- If editing files, verify the actual file and key for your build. Published guidance is inconsistent: BerryByte identifies
GameDifficultyPresetinSettings/ServerHostSettings.json, with valuesDifficulty_Easy,Difficulty_Normal, andDifficulty_Brutal; Supercraft identifies numericGameDifficultyinServerGameSettings.json, where 0, 1, and 2 correspond to Relaxed, Normal, and Brutal. G-Portal also shows"GameDifficulty": 2in a Brutal configuration example. Do not paste one source’s key into the other source’s file without confirmation from the host or your server’s generated configuration. - Check which settings the preset will replace. Applying a difficulty preset overwrites the listed modifier keys even if you edited those values earlier. If you want custom values, first establish the preset, then confirm which individual settings can be changed afterward and whether the host preserves them on restart.
- Restart as required by the host, then verify the loaded values. Check the panel status and the resulting configuration or in-game behavior before inviting players. A saved panel value is not proof that the intended world loaded it; verify after the server has started.
The names above are examples from different secondary hosting guides, not an official guarantee for every current server installation. A Steam community post additionally says non-Normal difficulty can be overridden by values in Difficulty_Relaxed.json or Difficulty_Brutal.json within a GameDifficultyPresets folder. That report is not an official confirmation, so treat those paths as a lead to check against your installation, not a universally valid instruction.
Why config guides disagree
The reported configuration methods do not point to one confirmed key-and-file combination. One explanation is that different files have different roles: one key could select a preset while another controls boss mechanics or modifiers. However, that possibility has not been confirmed by a primary source. It would be misleading to present it as the answer or to recommend setting both keys as a workaround.

One search summary says a launcher’s preset dropdown affects only the next fresh world, but that behavior was not verified against a cited page. Do not rely on it as a general rule for an existing save. Ask the host whether the setting is world-creation-only, changeable on an established world, and whether changing it requires a restart.

Some individual server values change death, inventory, or item behavior without selecting a difficulty. They can help tailor a server, but they do not resolve which ruleset or difficulty preset is active.
DeathContainerPermissionset to"OnlySelf"controls who can loot death containers. It concerns access to a death container; it is not a replacement for the Merciless ruleset.BloodBoundEquipmentset totruekeeps weapons with a player through death. Because Merciless is described as turning bloodbound equipment off, check the interaction between any manual override and the selected ruleset rather than assuming both settings can be independently combined.InventoryStacksModifiermultiplies maximum stack size. The stated default multiplier is 1.0, with a range of 0.25 to 3. This changes how much can be stacked, not enemy difficulty or the rules governing castle seizure.
These values are version-dependent. Before changing them, verify the labels and accepted values in the configuration generated by your server build. A key documented for one version or host panel may not be recognized by another.
Troubleshooting a difficulty change that did not take
The server shows the wrong difficulty
Confirm that you edited the file the running server actually reads, not simply a similarly named file from a guide. Compare the configured value with the host panel and generated server configuration. Because sources disagree on both file and key, do not “fix” a mismatch by setting every reported key; establish which control your host supports.

Your custom modifiers reverted
A preset application overwrites its listed modifier keys, including values you edited before applying it. Reapply the desired preset first, then review the individual modifier values afterward. If the host resets them again on startup, check whether its panel writes a fresh preset configuration each time.
The ruleset feels wrong even though difficulty is correct
Check the ruleset separately from difficulty. A server can have the intended Relaxed, Normal, or Brutal combat preset while using an unintended PvP, PvE, or Merciless ruleset. For Merciless, confirm the in-game rules text for death drops, bloodbound equipment, and Castle Key interactions before players commit to the world.

A change disrupted an existing world
Restore the backup if the server stops loading or starts with unexpected values. Then ask the hosting provider whether the setting is supported on an existing world, whether changes are applied on restart, and whether the startup panel rewrites the configuration. The available material does not establish a universal rule for changing a difficulty preset after world creation.
