To raise your Gear Level (often called gear score), craft or obtain the next equipment tier, equip it in every contributing slot, and replace weak weapons, armor and jewelry. V Rising does not use a conventional experience-based character level for this progression. Your displayed Gear Level is calculated from the loadout you are wearing, so an item sitting in a chest—or a recipe you unlocked but have not crafted—does not increase the number.
What Gear Level means in V Rising
Stunlock Studios describes Gear Level as the main measure of a vampire’s progression and combat strength. In the studio’s official guide, published July 7, 2025, the wording is: "Your Gear Level is the primary indicator of your vampire’s strength and progression in V Rising."

Weapons, armor, jewelry and certain passive spell or power contributions are part of the overall calculation. The number shown on your character sheet therefore changes when you equip a stronger item and can remain unchanged when you merely unlock a recipe or craft an upgrade without wearing it.
Gear Level is useful for judging whether you are approaching the expected progression band for a V Blood carrier, but it is not a complete build score. The V Rising Fandom Wiki notes that attributes are not directly changed by Gear Level. Weapon choice, spell selection, blood quality, weapon abilities, jewels and the way your build converts those stats into damage or survivability still matter. A higher number can make a fight accessible while a lower number with a better-matched build can still perform well.

The fastest reliable way to raise your Gear Level
Use this sequence whenever your next boss appears above your current number:
- Identify the next available weapon tier. Crafting a better weapon is the most common and sustainable route identified in Stunlock Studios’ guide. Progression unlocks for recipes are tied to activities such as defeating V Blood bosses and improving the crafting infrastructure needed for the recipe.
- Craft the weapon and equip it. The Gear Level calculation follows the currently equipped loadout. Leaving the new weapon in storage does not help, and a weapon in an inactive or unintended slot may not be the one you are using to meet the encounter requirement.
- Replace every armor piece that is still from an older set. Chest, legs, gloves, boots and any applicable helmet each contribute. One old piece can keep the total below the next threshold even when the rest of the set is current.
- Upgrade rings, amulets or pendants. Jewelry is an easy slot to overlook and is specifically named in the official troubleshooting guidance as a possible reason a player remains under a boss’s expected level.
- Check for a set bonus. Some complete armor sets add 1 Gear Level in addition to the base values of their individual pieces. A set that looks only slightly different on its item cards may provide the point needed to cross a requirement.
- On a full-loot PvP server, consider player loot. Stunlock’s guide lists defeating other players and taking equipment from bodies or chests as an additional route to stronger gear. This option is specific to servers whose rules allow that form of looting.
After each change, reopen the character or inventory screen and verify that the displayed total actually moved. This catches the most common mistake: improving an item in theory but not changing the item that is currently equipped.
How each equipment slot contributes
Weapons
Weapons are usually the most visible Gear Level upgrade because each new material tier represents a clear progression step. The recipe may be unavailable until a V Blood victory or a crafting-station upgrade unlocks it. Once the recipe is available, gather the listed materials, craft the weapon, and put it in the active weapon slot before checking the total.
Do not discard a weapon solely because another weapon has a similar Gear Level. Weapon type affects move sets and abilities, so compare the level gain with the physical or spell-related stats and the abilities your build actually uses. If two choices provide the same progression value, the one whose moves and bonuses fit your combat plan may be better even though the Gear Level screen cannot express that preference.
Armor
Armor is calculated piece by piece. Inspect the chest, legs, gloves and boots, plus any helmet slot that exists for your current equipment line. Replacing three pieces while leaving one previous-tier item equipped can produce a smaller increase than expected. The armor reference also documents complete-set effects; where a set bonus is available, completing the set can add 1 Gear Level beyond the pieces’ base values.
Set completion is a trade-off rather than an automatic command. A mixed loadout can offer a useful stat or effect that a nominally higher piece does not. Check the base Gear Level, the physical or spell statistics, the set effect and the materials needed before committing to a replacement.

Jewelry
Rings, amulets and pendants contribute to the total just as armor and weapons do. Jewelry is often the missing upgrade when a player’s armor appears current. Compare the tier of every equipped piece with the newest jewelry recipe you can use, then craft and equip the higher-tier item. A stronger necklace or ring in your inventory has no effect until it replaces the lower-tier item on your character.
Passive spells and powers
Stunlock’s guide includes some passive spell or power contributions among the factors that can affect Gear Level. Their availability and exact values can depend on the current game version and progression state. Treat them as part of the complete loadout review, but do not assume that learning a spell automatically replaces an equipment upgrade; verify the number on the character screen after making the change.
Gear Level progression by tier
The following example totals come from the V Rising Fandom Wiki’s Gear Level table, current as crawled in 2026. They describe broad tier totals rather than a guarantee for every server, patch or equipment combination. The later tier can show two totals because the weapon setup changes the sum.

These values are a planning aid, not a promise that every live world will display the same number. Patches can change item values, and server owners can alter progression settings. If your game disagrees with a table, trust the values on your current item cards and character sheet.

Stunlock Studios’ official maximum-level guidance describes a late-game setup reaching Gear Level 91 with Dracula’s Shadow Armor Set or an equivalent high-end set. That figure is version-sensitive: a later patch, a different equipment line or custom server settings can change the practical cap or the values needed to reach it. Use 91 as the published reference for that guide’s ruleset, not as an immutable promise for every future season or private server.
The same caution applies to the tier totals above. Before planning a long farming route around a single number, inspect the recipes and item values available in your world. A recipe may be unlocked under one ruleset but require a different progression order or station under another.

Why your Gear Level is stuck below a V Blood carrier
When the next V Blood target is above your displayed level, work through the loadout rather than repeatedly crafting random items.
1. Verify the active weapon
Ask whether the newest weapon is actually equipped and selected for combat. Crafting it, placing it on a hotbar, or carrying it in your inventory is not enough. Equip the intended weapon, then read the total again.
2. Inspect jewelry before farming another armor set
A lower-tier ring, amulet or pendant can be the single lagging slot. Compare each jewelry item with the newest recipe you have unlocked. This check is quick and often explains a total that seems one step short.
3. Find the old armor piece
Open each armor slot individually. Look for a chest, leg, glove, boot or helmet item from the previous set. Replace the outlier, and then check whether completing the current set activates its documented +1 Gear Level effect.
4. Separate unlocked recipes from crafted gear
An unlocked recipe only tells you that the item is available to make. Gather its materials, craft it at the required station, equip it and verify the number. If the station or recipe is still unavailable, review the V Blood unlock and crafting-infrastructure requirements associated with that tier.
5. Check server progression settings
Custom settings can alter the pace or requirements of progression. A guide written for standard settings may not match a private server with adjusted crafting costs, loot rules or progression multipliers. Ask the server owner which settings are active before assuming your character is bugged.

6. Recheck after every change
Make one loadout change at a time and read the character sheet after it. This identifies the slot that moved the total and prevents you from spending materials on upgrades that do not address the actual gap.
How to choose between two possible upgrades
The highest Gear Level item is not automatically the strongest combat choice. Use the following comparison order when two items are available:

| How much Gear Level does the item add? | It determines whether the upgrade helps you meet a progression check or V Blood requirement. |
| What physical or spell stats change? | These values affect damage, defense or resource behavior beyond the headline level. |
| Does it complete or break a set bonus? | A complete set may add 1 Gear Level and provide an effect that a mixed set does not. |
| What materials and recipe access are required? | An item that is theoretically better may be impractical if its recipe or station is not yet available. |
| Can your character use it now? | Progression locks, required infrastructure and server rules can make an item unavailable despite its place in a reference table. |
| Does it fit your build? | Weapon moves, spell setup, blood quality and other choices can outweigh a small numerical increase in a particular fight. |
For a boss gate, prioritize the upgrade that raises the displayed total enough to meet the requirement. For a difficult fight you already qualify for, compare the actual stats and abilities as carefully as the level number.

A practical upgrade workflow
Use this repeatable routine whenever a new tier opens:
- Record your current total. Note the displayed Gear Level and the V Blood carrier or activity you are preparing for.
- Check the newest weapon recipe. Confirm which boss victory, station upgrade or other progression event unlocks it, then gather the required materials.
- Craft and equip the weapon. Select it as the active weapon and confirm that the character sheet changed.
- Audit all armor slots. Compare the tier of every piece, including any applicable helmet, and replace the oldest item first if resources are limited.
- Audit jewelry. Upgrade the lowest-tier ring, amulet or pendant rather than assuming armor alone determines the total.
- Complete a documented set when it is practical. Include the possible +1 set contribution in your calculation, but retain a mixed piece if its stats are essential to your build and you already meet the required level.
- Recheck the total and your combat setup. A new weapon can change abilities or your preferred rotation, so confirm both the number and the skills you intend to use.
- Only then attempt the V Blood fight. If the number is still low, return to the slot-by-slot troubleshooting list instead of assuming the game uses hidden XP.
What Gear Level does not tell you
- It is not an experience level. There is no conventional XP bar that you can grind to raise this number independently of equipment progression.
- It is not a damage guarantee. Two vampires with the same total can have different weapon types, spells, blood quality and stat priorities.
- It does not validate an unequipped inventory. Stored items, spare weapons and uncrafted recipes do not count toward the displayed loadout.
- It is not permanent across loadouts. Changing equipment changes the calculation, so a combat set and a farming set can show different totals.
- It does not override server rules. Loot availability, crafting costs and progression speed can differ on custom worlds and on full-loot PvP servers.
Use Gear Level as the game’s progression language, then use the underlying stats and abilities to decide how to win the fight.
Common mistakes that waste materials
Crafting without equipping
Players sometimes make the correct item, place it in storage and expect the number to rise. Equip it before evaluating the result.

Upgrading only the weapon
A new weapon cannot compensate for several old armor pieces or low-tier jewelry. Inspect every contributing slot.

The tier examples and the published level-91 setup are tied to named sources and dates. Treat them as references and verify current item values in your version.
Ignoring the set effect
If a complete set is documented to add 1 Gear Level, stopping one piece short can leave you below a threshold even when the base item values look sufficient.
Assuming a higher number is always better
When you already satisfy a boss requirement, a lower-level item with a relevant ability or stat can be the more effective choice. Compare the complete build, not only the headline number.
Gear Level and multiplayer server rules
On standard progression, crafting and V Blood unlocks are the normal route to each successive equipment tier. Full-loot PvP servers add another possibility: defeating a player and taking equipment from a body or chest can provide a higher-tier item sooner, subject to that server’s rules. This does not make PvP loot a universal shortcut; it is unavailable or inappropriate on servers with different loot settings, and the item still has to be equipped to affect your total.
Private-server administrators can also change progression settings. If several players on the same world report totals or recipes that differ from a guide, compare the server configuration and game version first. The character sheet remains the authoritative value for your vampire under those rules.
