V Rising has seven main shapeshifting forms: Wolf, Bear, Rat, Human, Spider, Toad, and Bat. Each is a Vampire Power gained from a specific V Blood encounter. They are utility tools rather than a single combat rotation: Wolf covers fast ground, Bear provides toughness and strength, Rat reduces detection, Human enables social interactions, Spider burrows, Toad jumps vertically, and Bat flies over blocked terrain. The right form depends on your route, destination, threats, and what you are carrying.
All seven V Rising forms at a glance
The table below separates each form’s main job from the condition that most often makes it unsafe or unavailable. A form can be excellent in one situation and a poor choice in another; none replaces ordinary weapons and spells in every encounter.

How shapeshifting works
Forms are Vampire Powers learned through V Blood progression. Unlocking one is tied to defeating the encounter associated with that power; finding the form in a menu does not replace the boss fight. Once available, you select the power and transform when the environment allows it.
Think of shapeshifting as a movement, infiltration, and access system. Wolf and Bat solve different travel problems, Rat and Spider reduce the chance of being noticed, Human lets a vampire operate around people, Toad reaches places that a normal jump cannot, and Bear changes how you approach danger. These powers are situational, so carrying the right form for the next objective matters more than choosing a permanent favorite.

Transformation safety is governed by three questions:
- Can the form be activated here? Bat has the clearest location restrictions, while other forms are primarily limited by interruption.
- What immediately cancels it? Wolf and Rat are especially fragile when enemies or environmental damage are nearby.
- Does the destination support the form? A flight path still needs a legal landing point, and a social disguise only helps where human interactions are available.
Wolf Form: the fast ground-travel option
Wolf Form is the standard answer when you need to cross ordinary overland terrain quickly without taking to the air. It improves movement speed and is usually the most convenient choice for road travel, scouting a nearby region, or returning to an area that is reachable on foot.

Treat the percentage as update-sensitive rather than as a permanently reliable value. The important, version-robust behavior is that Wolf Form is faster than normal travel and is intended for open ground.
When Wolf is the better travel choice
- Use it for roads, fields, and other continuous ground routes where flight would add unnecessary restrictions.
- Choose it when you expect to pass near threats but can avoid being hit; the form’s speed is useful only while it remains active.
- Prefer it over Bat when you need to arrive at a precise ground-level entrance or when the destination has no suitable aerial landing point.
Wolf Form’s interruption rule
Damage cancels Wolf Form. A projectile, environmental hit, or melee strike can therefore turn a fast trip into a normal-speed escape at the worst possible moment. Start the transformation outside an enemy’s attack range, route around patrols rather than through them, and leave enough distance to recover if the form ends.
Bear Form: durability, Smash, and Crush
Bear Form is the strength-oriented transformation. It is built for situations in which staying power and direct physical force matter more than speed or concealment.

While transformed, Smash and Crush replace your normal weapon skills. That makes Bear a distinct combat and utility mode rather than a cosmetic change to your existing loadout. Select it when those replacement abilities suit the obstacle or engagement you are about to handle.

What Bear Form is good for
- Use its durability when a route or objective is likely to expose you to unavoidable pressure.
- Use Smash and Crush when their direct, strength-focused behavior is more useful than your equipped weapon’s skill set.
- Keep it in mind for robust, deliberate approaches where stealth and speed are not the priority.
Cosmetic variant
The Eldest Bloodline DLC adds a cosmetic Stygian Bear variant. It changes the appearance of the bear transformation; the underlying role described above remains the reason to choose Bear Form.
Rat Form: reduce detection and slip through danger
Rat Form is the stealth transformation. Its purpose is to lower detection, giving you a way to pass through an area without attracting the attention that ordinary vampire movement would create.
Use Rat when avoidance is the objective
- Activate it before entering a monitored area, not after enemies have already focused on you.
- Use it to bypass attention while positioning for a later objective; it is not a substitute for defeating an enemy that has already engaged you.
- Plan the end of the transformation before interacting with anything that requires a normal action.
Actions that cancel Rat Form
Rat Form ends if you take damage, attack, use an ability, use an item, or perform an emote. Those cancellation rules make it powerful for passing unnoticed but unreliable during an active fight. If you need to heal, attack, or use an object, create distance first and assume the transformation will end as soon as you perform that action.
Human Form: interact and trade among humans
Human Form is a social disguise. It allows the vampire to operate in human society and is the form to choose when your objective involves human interactions or trading rather than combat speed, stealth through wilderness, or aerial movement.

Why the disguise matters
- Use Human Form when a destination’s useful activity is social rather than hostile.
- Switch before approaching the interaction you need; arriving in another form does not provide the same access.
- Keep a combat or escape form ready for the route out, because Human Form is an access tool rather than a defensive upgrade.
The disguise does not turn the vampire into a general-purpose human fighter. Its value is access: it lets you participate in human-facing interactions and trading that would otherwise be unavailable.
Spider Form: Burrow for stealth-oriented traversal
Spider Form’s defining mechanic is Burrow. Rather than simply increasing speed or disguising the vampire, it gives you a way to use the ground and nearby terrain for stealth-oriented movement.
When to choose Spider
- Choose it when staying concealed while traversing an area is more important than covering the maximum distance.
- Use Burrow as the form’s central tool; the transformation is valuable because of how it changes your relationship with the terrain.
- Plan the exit point before committing, especially near enemies that can punish you as soon as you return to normal form.
Spider and Rat overlap in the broad goal of avoiding attention, but they solve different problems. Rat is defined by reduced detection and strict action-based cancellation; Spider is defined by Burrow and the traversal opportunities that mechanic creates.
Toad Form: reach higher places with a powerful jump
Toad Form is the vertical-mobility option. Its high jump reaches places that ordinary movement cannot, making it useful when the obstacle is height rather than distance.
Best uses for Toad
- Use it to gain access to elevated ledges or to clear vertical barriers.
- Pick it when a short, controlled leap is more practical than a long aerial route.
- Combine route planning with the landing area: a successful jump still needs a safe place to continue once you arrive.
Toad is not a replacement for Bat. It provides a high jump, while Bat provides flight over impassable terrain. Select between them based on whether the problem is a single vertical obstacle or a broad area that cannot be crossed on the ground.

Bat Form: fly over impassable terrain
Bat Form is the longest-range traversal tool in the set. It lets the vampire fly over terrain that would block Wolf, Toad, or ordinary movement, which can radically shorten a route across separated regions or large obstacles.
Bat Form’s hard restrictions
- No indoor use: you cannot activate or use the form inside buildings and other unsuitable interior spaces.
- Restricted carried resources: the game can prevent activation while you are carrying resources that Bat Form does not permit. The restriction is not an invitation to guess which items are affected; if the game blocks the transformation, deposit or otherwise remove the restricted load before trying again.
- Valid landing location required: flight is not a way to end anywhere. The destination must provide a legal place to land.
- Sunlight exposure: being airborne does not remove the vampire’s vulnerability to sunlight. Begin and end the trip with the sun cycle and shade in mind.
Planning a safe flight
- Leave an interior space and move to an open activation point.
- Check your carried resources. If Bat is unavailable because of the load, return those resources to storage or another appropriate location.
- Choose a destination with a valid landing area, not merely a point that looks reachable from the air.
- Check the current sunlight risk and the shade available at both ends of the route.
- Activate only after all four checks pass; otherwise a short ground route may be safer than a failed flight attempt.
How to unlock every form
The seven forms are associated with seven V Blood encounters. Use this checklist to track the powers without confusing a form’s role with its unlock source.

After each encounter, verify that the corresponding power is available before planning around it. A route that assumes Bat, for example, still fails if the power is not unlocked or if the current interior, resource, landing, or sunlight conditions block it.

Common problems and practical fixes
“The form turned off as soon as I reached danger.”
For Wolf, damage is the direct cause. For Rat, damage and several deliberate actions all cancel the transformation. Start farther from enemies, approach from cover, and avoid treating a stealth or travel form as an invulnerability state.

“Rat Form ended when I tried to interact.”
Items, abilities, attacks, and emotes cancel Rat Form. Finish the stealth approach first, move to a safe position, then perform the interaction after accepting that the disguise has ended.

“Bat Form is unavailable.”
- Move outside; Bat cannot be used indoors.
- Check the resources you are carrying. Restricted carried resources can block the form.
- Look for a valid landing location at the destination.
- Recheck the sunlight situation before starting a flight that could leave you exposed.
“I cannot decide between Wolf, Toad, and Bat.”
Classify the obstacle first. Wolf is for speed along connected ground, Toad is for a high jump over a vertical barrier, and Bat is for crossing a broad impassable area. If any Bat restriction fails, use the ground form that matches the remaining route instead of forcing an aerial plan.
“The Wolf speed number I saw does not match another guide.”
Both 45% and 60% movement increases have been reported. Because the references disagree, quote a percentage only with the game or update version it describes. For day-to-day decisions, rely on the stable distinction: Wolf is the faster ground-travel form, and damage cancels it.
Version-aware expectations
Form functions are more stable than individual balance numbers, but movement values can change between updates. The Wolf bonus is the clearest example: published references give different percentages. If a patch changes a value, that does not alter the practical categories in this guide—ground speed, strength, stealth, social access, burrowing, jumping, and flight—but it can change the exact time saved on a route.
