To fish in V Rising, defeat Rufus the Foreman (Level 20), use the Woodworking Bench to craft a Fishing Pole for 120 Wood, and cast only at marked fishing spots. Fish can then be placed in The Devourer to produce Fish Oil, Fish Bones and, for some species, Scales. The fastest practical oil supply is usually a combination of settlement loot at Brighthaven Docks or Mosswick Village and salvaging fish you do not need for prisoners, potions or Vermin Nest spawners.
This guide covers the unlock path, fishing-spot selection, every documented fish use and salvage yield, and the trade-offs between fishing and looting for Fish Oil.

What you need before fishing
Fishing is gated behind a specific boss and two crafting stations. The Fishing Pole recipe comes from Rufus the Foreman, while Fish Oil production requires The Devourer.
Defeat Rufus the Foreman
Gamer Guides lists Rufus the Foreman at Level 20 as the boss that unlocks the Woodworking Bench and Fishing Pole recipes. Track Rufus through the V Blood interface, defeat him, and claim the unlocked recipes before attempting to craft the pole.

Craft the Woodworking Bench
Build the Woodworking Bench after Rufus is defeated. The Fishing Pole is crafted at this bench, not at the basic crafting interface.
Obtain The Devourer
The Devourer is the station that deconstructs fish into Fish Oil and other materials. Gamer Guides associates the Devourer recipe with Lidia the Chaos Archer. If the station is not available in your current progression, check the V Blood tracker for Lidia and complete the associated unlock before planning a large fishing run.
How to craft the Fishing Pole
- Collect 120 Wood. The item database lists 120 Wood as the Fishing Pole cost.
- Open the Woodworking Bench. Select the Fishing Pole recipe once the bench and recipe are unlocked.
- Craft the pole. The pole is the required tool for interacting with fishing spots; ordinary attacks do not start the fishing interaction.
- Carry the pole to a water route. Fishing spots are fixed points in bodies of water, so take the pole with you while scouting rivers, lakes and coastline areas.
The documented recipe specifies the Wood cost but does not state additional materials or a durability value. Avoid assuming that every body of water is fishable: the fishing reference describes catches as coming from designated spots rather than from any shoreline.
How to fish at a fishing spot
- Equip the Fishing Pole. Make it your active item before approaching the water.
- Locate a designated spot. Look for the specific fishing interaction point in the water. A visually accessible shoreline is not enough unless the spot is present.
- Start the fishing interaction. Use the prompt at the spot and wait for the catch sequence to finish.
- Collect the fish. The resulting fish goes into your inventory. Repeat at another marked spot when the current location no longer offers an interaction.
- Sort the catch immediately. Some fish are more valuable as prisoner food, potion ingredients or Vermin Nest components than as salvage. Reserve those first and send only the surplus to The Devourer.
Map locations have different catch probabilities. Choosing a region for a target species is therefore more efficient than fishing randomly and hoping for a particular drop.
Fishing spots and catch probabilities
The percentages below are the documented catch probabilities for the named zones. A value is a zone-specific chance, not a guarantee that every cast produces that fish. “All zones” means the fish is listed throughout the world, while the percentage shown identifies its most common documented location.

For a prisoner-care trip, Silverlight Hills is the documented target for Rainbow Trout and Sage Fish, while Hallowed Mountains is the strongest listed Fat Goby location. For Vermin Nest materials, Dunley Farmlands favors Twilight Snapper, Silverlight Hills supplies Golden River Bass and Cursed Forest supplies Blood Snapper. Those choices reduce wasted casts when a specific item is your objective.
Decide what to do with each fish
Fish have three broad roles: consumables for prisoners, ingredients for potions, and inputs for Vermin Nest spawners. Salvage is the fallback for extras, not automatically the best first use.
Prisoner care
- Fat Goby: fully restores a prisoner’s health.
- Rainbow Trout: lowers misery by 5–10%.
- Sage Fish: restores 30–70% of prisoner health and lowers misery by 15–30%.
Keep these fish when you are maintaining prisoners. A Fish Oil conversion cannot replace the direct health or misery effects, so salvage only the amount beyond your care reserve.
Potion ingredients
- Fierce Stinger: ingredient for Potion of Rage.
- Swamp Dweller: ingredient for Witch Potion.
If you craft either potion regularly, set those species aside before opening The Devourer. The correct reserve depends on your current production needs; the documented material does not specify a fixed number to keep.
Vermin Nest spawners
- Twilight Snapper: summons Putrid Rat.
- Golden River Bass: summons Spiderling.
- Blood Snapper: summons Mosquito.
These fish have a distinct crafting role in addition to their salvage yield. Label or separate them in storage so an oil run does not consume a fish needed for the next nest spawn.

How to make Fish Oil in The Devourer
- Build and place The Devourer. Use the station unlocked through the Lidia the Chaos Archer progression described by Gamer Guides.
- Open its input inventory. Place the fish you have decided not to keep.
- Start deconstruction. The Devourer converts each fish into the documented salvage outputs.
- Collect the results. Fish Oil appears with Fish Bones and, for several species, Scales or Gold Jewelry.
- Repeat in batches. Because the conversion is one of the few repeatable ways to turn caught fish into oil, process surplus catches after every fishing session rather than letting them occupy storage.
The station is a conversion tool, not a way to manufacture fish from raw materials. Your oil rate is limited by the fish you catch or loot, and high-value fish can be worth more when saved for another purpose.

The V Rising Wiki entries cited for these recipes report 6 Fish Oil for Fierce Stinger, Fat Goby, Rainbow Trout and Sage Fish; 10 for Swamp Dweller and the listed spawner fish; and 50 for The Fish. The Fish is listed at only 1% in Cursed Forest, so its 50-oil yield is a rare jackpot rather than a dependable farming plan.
Fastest ways to farm Fish Oil
There is no single route that wins in every situation. Compare methods by unlock requirements, travel time, fishing-spot search time, the value of the fish you might consume, oil per fish and exposure to danger while looting.

Why Brighthaven Docks is usually the first stop
Gamer Guides specifically identifies Brighthaven Docks as a particularly productive Fish Oil route. Search chests, containers and destructible objects rather than limiting yourself to fishing spots. The route is most efficient when you are already traveling through the area for another objective, because it combines general loot with the chance of direct Fish Oil.

Mosswick Village is another cited source of Fish Oil through settlement loot. Add it to a route when it lies between your base and another destination. The available information does not establish a guaranteed amount, exact container list or respawn timer, so treat it as supplemental income rather than a precise oil-per-minute calculation.

Fish when you need specific materials
Fishing is the better choice when you need a particular prisoner food, potion ingredient or Vermin Nest spawner and can salvage the leftovers. For example, targeting Silverlight Hills can produce Rainbow Trout at a listed 22% and Sage Fish at 10%, while also allowing surplus catches to become 6-oil inputs. This dual-purpose trip can outperform a pure loot run even when the immediate oil total is lower.
A practical Fish Oil farming routine
- Check your reserves. Count prisoner-care fish, potion ingredients and spawner fish before leaving the castle.
- Choose the route by priority. Use Brighthaven Docks or Mosswick Village when oil alone is the goal; choose a fishing zone when a named species is also required.
- Carry the Fishing Pole and empty inventory space. Fishing produces individual fish, while settlement runs add container loot.
- Loot direct oil first. At Brighthaven Docks or Mosswick Village, collect Fish Oil from chests, containers and destructible objects before moving on.
- Fish only at marked spots. Do not spend time casting at unmarked water.
- Sort the catch at the castle. Store Fat Goby, Rainbow Trout, Sage Fish, Fierce Stinger, Swamp Dweller and the three spawner fish according to your current needs.
- Deconstruct the remainder. Put surplus fish into The Devourer and collect the resulting oil, bones, scales and jewelry.
This routine avoids the most expensive mistake: converting a fish that would have saved prisoner health, reduced misery, supplied a potion or spawned a needed creature.

Choosing a zone for a specific goal
Prisoner health
Go to Hallowed Mountains when Fat Goby is the priority; it is listed at 26% there and fully restores prisoner health. If you need a stronger mixed-care catch, Silverlight Hills lists Sage Fish at 10%, which restores 30–70% health and reduces misery by 15–30%.
Prisoner misery
Silverlight Hills is the documented target for Rainbow Trout at 22% and Sage Fish at 10%. Rainbow Trout lowers misery by 5–10%, while Sage Fish provides the larger 15–30% reduction range alongside partial health restoration.
Potion ingredients
For Fierce Stinger, the listed probabilities are 10% in Farbane Woods and 12% in both Dunley Farmlands and Hallowed Mountains. Swamp Dweller is listed at 19.5% in Cursed Forest. Choose the route that matches the ingredient and your travel plan rather than assuming the highest percentage is always the shortest trip.

Vermin Nest materials
Target Dunley Farmlands for Twilight Snapper at 14%, Silverlight Hills for Golden River Bass at 14%, and Cursed Forest for Blood Snapper at 12.5%. Each produces 10 Fish Oil, 1 Fish Bone and 20 Scales when salvaged, but retaining the fish for its summon may be more valuable than the oil.
Maximum oil from a catch
The Fish produces 50 Fish Oil, 8 Gold Jewelry and 250 Scales, but its listed Cursed Forest probability is only 1%. Treat it as an exceptional find. For predictable output, the 10-oil species—Swamp Dweller, Twilight Snapper, Golden River Bass and Blood Snapper—are more reliable targets than waiting for The Fish.
Common problems and fixes
The Fishing Pole recipe is missing
Confirm that Rufus the Foreman has been defeated at Level 20 and that the Woodworking Bench is available. The recipe is tied to that progression, so gathering Wood alone does not unlock it.
The pole cannot be crafted
Check that the Woodworking Bench is the active station and that you have 120 Wood. The documented recipe is bench-specific.
The water has no fishing prompt
Move along the shoreline and look for a designated fishing spot. The fishing reference does not describe open-water casting; an unmarked stretch of water will not necessarily accept the pole.
The Devourer is unavailable
Review the Lidia the Chaos Archer progression in the V Blood tracker. Gamer Guides associates Lidia with the Devourer recipe, and the station is required to convert fish into Fish Oil.
You are running out of oil despite catching fish
Check whether you are keeping every fish. Reserve only the quantities needed for current prisoner, potion and Vermin Nest work, then salvage the remainder. Also add Brighthaven Docks and Mosswick Village to your travel loop, where Fish Oil can appear in lootable objects.
You are short on a fish needed for a recipe
Stop salvaging that species until the recipe or prisoner requirement is met. Use the zone table to target its most favorable documented location, and farm a different fish for oil if necessary.
