Choose a Private Game if a small group normally starts and ends each session together. Choose a Dedicated Server if the world must stay available while the original host is offline, players keep different schedules, or someone needs persistent administration. A self-hosted dedicated server provides the most control but requires a machine, networking, updates and backups; a managed rental removes much of that work for a recurring fee.
The key distinction is where the server process runs. A Private Game runs the server in the host’s V Rising client. A Dedicated Server runs as a separate application, so it can continue independently of any player’s game client when the process and network remain available.

There is no universally better option. Availability, maintenance tolerance, control, cost and platform version should decide the choice.
What actually changes between the two modes
Stunlock’s official server documentation describes the V Rising client as including a server that runs in the background for a local Private Game. Its Dedicated Server instructions cover downloading and running a separate server application. In practical terms, the process that owns the world is different: the Private Game process belongs to the host’s game session, while the Dedicated Server process is independent of the game client.

That distinction explains the behavior players notice. Closing the host’s game closes the Private Game server, so friends cannot use that world until the host launches it again. A Dedicated Server can remain available after every player leaves, provided the server application is still running and reachable over the network. It also gives an administrator a persistent place to manage configuration, permissions, logs, restarts and save files.
When a Private Game is the right choice
Use it for coordinated co-op sessions
Private Game is the quickest path for a small group whose members usually meet at the same time. The host starts V Rising, creates or loads the private world, and friends join through the normal game flow. There is no separate server download, process window or server-machine setup to maintain.

This model is especially suitable for a few friends progressing through the game together. The host can decide when the session starts, and everyone plays in the same window of time. For that pattern, a dedicated deployment adds administration without solving a problem the group has.
Understand the host dependency
The trade-off is availability. The world is tied to the host’s machine and save-management workflow, and the host must be in the game for the world to be running. If the host is away, asleep, updating the game or has closed the client, other players cannot continue in that world.

Before choosing Private Game, agree on who owns the save and how it will be protected. A group that changes hosts frequently can end up with several world copies and no single authoritative save. The simplest arrangement is one dependable host who keeps the machine and game installation available for scheduled sessions.
When a Dedicated Server is worth the extra work
Choose it for an asynchronous group
A Dedicated Server is the better fit when players have different schedules or want to gather at any time. Because the server is a standalone process, one player can log off while the world remains available to others. Clans, communities and long-running worlds benefit from that persistence.

The separate application gives an owner a durable administration point. Stunlock’s guide describes changing the server name and advanced options, and a managed host can expose status, logs, configuration files, restarts, updates and permissions. These controls matter when several people share a world or when you need to diagnose a problem without opening a player’s game session.
Account for uptime and maintenance
Dedicated does not mean automatic. A self-hosted process has to stay running, the machine has to remain powered and connected, and the required network ports must be open or forwarded. Someone must apply game and server updates, protect save files and restart the process when necessary. If nobody in the group wants that responsibility, renting is usually more practical than self-hosting.

Renting versus self-hosting
Self-hosting
Self-hosting means installing the Dedicated Server tool on a machine you control. It can be a spare PC or another always-on system that meets the game’s requirements, but the decision is not only about hardware. You also take responsibility for bandwidth, operating-system updates, firewall and router configuration, backups, access control and recovery after a crash.
The benefit is control: you choose the machine, retain the files and avoid a recurring hosting bill. The real cost is the combination of electricity, hardware wear and administration time. A server that is technically free can still be expensive in attention if nobody is available to update or restart it.
Managed rental
A managed rental places the standalone server on a provider’s infrastructure. Stunlock’s official hosting guide names PocketHost and describes controls for status, basic settings, logs, configuration files, restarts, updates and permissions. Those features address the chores that make self-hosting unattractive, although the exact interface and limits are provider-specific.
Rental makes sense when the group values predictable availability and no player wants to leave a computer running or manage router settings. It introduces a recurring charge and a dependency on the provider’s region, policies and support. Pricing, availability and features can change, so check the current offer for the locations and player count you need before paying.

PlayStation 5 considerations
Stunlock’s PlayStation 5 FAQ names GPORTAL as a server-rental option. That reference does not establish a universal price, region or feature set; confirm current availability for your territory and the PS5 version before ordering. The presence of a rental option is useful when a console group wants a persistent world but does not have a suitable PC to run a server.

How to set up a Dedicated Server
The exact instructions depend on the platform and game branch. Stunlock publishes separate current and legacy instructions for PC and PS5, so select the branch that matches your installation rather than copying settings from an older guide.
- Install the server tool. In Steam, open the Tools section of your library and install V Rising Dedicated Server. This is separate from launching the normal game.
- Choose the matching official instructions. Use Stunlock’s current or legacy branch for your platform and version. The server files, update method and configuration details can differ between branches.
- Launch from the installation directory. Start the server executable from the folder where Steam installed the tool. A newly launched server runs with default settings until you change them.
- Set identity and gameplay options. Configure the server name and the advanced options appropriate for your group. Keep a written record of intentional changes so an update or replacement machine does not force you to reconstruct the setup.
- Prepare network access. Make sure the required ports are allowed through the host firewall and forwarded on the router when players connect from outside the local network. The exact port values and rules belong to the instruction branch for your version; do not substitute values from an unrelated release.
- Protect the world files. Back up configuration and save data before updates or major setting changes. Store a copy somewhere other than the server machine so a disk failure does not destroy the only world.
- Give players connection details. Players can find the server by its configured name or connect using the external IP, depending on the network and the discovery method available to them.
- Allow for list propagation. Stunlock notes that a newly launched server may take a few minutes to appear in the server list. If it is not visible immediately, wait briefly and verify that the process and network access are still active before rebuilding the installation.
- Plan updates. Apply updates using the method appropriate to the deployment. Stunlock’s current 1.1.x PC instructions say SteamCMD can verify and update a server while it is offline. Stop the process when the procedure requires it, back up the world first, then confirm that the server and clients are on compatible versions.

Common problems and the quickest diagnosis
Friends cannot join after the host leaves
That is expected for a Private Game: the client-hosted server stops when the host closes the game. Either schedule sessions around the host or move the world to a Dedicated Server arrangement that can remain online.
The dedicated server is not in the browser
Wait several minutes after launch because list propagation is not always immediate. Then check that the standalone process is still running, the server name is correct and the network path allows the required ports. Testing by external IP can distinguish a discovery delay from a reachability problem.

Players connect locally but not from outside
This usually points to the network boundary rather than the world save: review firewall permissions, router forwarding and the external address being shared. Keep the server’s instruction branch beside you, since port requirements are version-dependent.

Confirm that you edited the configuration used by the launched server and that the process had time to write changes before closing. Back up the configuration and save directories so you can compare files after an update or migration.
An update leaves clients unable to connect
Stop the server when required by the update procedure, verify or update the server files, then update every player’s client through its normal platform channel. If the problem began after a settings change, restore the last known-good backup rather than deleting the world.
How official servers fit into the decision
Official servers are a separate option from both a player-hosted Private Game and a player-managed Dedicated Server. In a May 3, 2024 announcement, Stunlock said the goal of official servers was to provide a stable V Rising experience and that it ultimately expected players to move to private servers with more tailored gameplay after learning the game. That announcement also listed a 60-player cap for official servers at that time.
Treat that cap and policy statement as dated. Server rules, capacity and availability can change, so do not use the 2024 figure as a current guarantee. If you need control over settings, administrators or backups, an official server does not provide the same ownership model as your own dedicated deployment.

A practical decision checklist
- Will anyone need to play when the original host is offline?
- Do players have overlapping schedules, or will they join asynchronously?
- Who will launch, monitor, update and restart a standalone process?
- Can that person keep a machine online and configure the required network access?
- Are persistent permissions, logs, configuration files and backups important?
- Would a recurring hosting charge be preferable to hardware and maintenance time?
- Are you following the current instruction branch for your PC or PS5 installation?
- Does the group have a clear owner for the world files and a backup plan?
If the first answer is no and the group plays together, start with Private Game. If the answer is yes, or the group needs ongoing administration, use a Dedicated Server; rent it when maintenance is a burden, or self-host it when control and ownership justify the work.
