V-Bucks are Fortnite’s in-game currency, but Epic Games’ official materials do not expand the “V.” So the accurate answer to “What does V-Bucks stand for?” is that Epic has not established a longer phrase for the initial. V-Bucks are used to buy Fortnite items and passes—not to transfer value between player accounts.
What does “V” in V-Bucks stand for?
Epic Games calls V-Bucks Fortnite’s in-game currency, but its official definition and card terms do not explain what the “V” represents. That means there is no confirmed expansion to give; fan explanations should not be treated as Epic’s official etymology. Epic’s V-Bucks page and its card terms define the currency and its use without spelling out the initial.

What are V-Bucks used for?
V-Bucks are Fortnite’s virtual currency. Epic says players can spend them on Outfits, Pickaxes, Emotes, Wraps, and Fortnite Passes. They are an in-game balance, not cash: Epic says V-Bucks cannot be transferred between accounts and does not offer refunds for unused V-Bucks. See Epic’s current V-Bucks FAQ for its terms.
What is the difference between a V-Bucks card and a Fortnite gift card?
Epic is replacing V-Bucks cards over time with Fortnite gift cards, though older V-Bucks cards may remain available during the rollout. The distinction is what the redeemed balance can buy:
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
| Card | What it adds | What the balance can buy |
|---|---|---|
| V-Bucks card | V-Bucks | V-Bucks for Fortnite |
| Fortnite gift card | Epic account balance | V-Bucks and other eligible Epic purchases |
Availability and terms vary by region. Before buying or redeeming a card, check its region, the region of the Epic account, and the current redemption terms. Epic explains the card transition and gift-card rollout in its June 4, 2025 announcement and V-Bucks FAQ.
Can you use V-Bucks across platforms?
Epic’s Fortnite Shared Wallet guidance lists PlayStation, Xbox, PC, mobile, and cloud gaming services among supported platforms. There is an important Nintendo exception: V-Bucks received on Nintendo devices by redeeming a card can only be used on Nintendo devices. Platform support and wallet rules can change, so check Epic’s current Shared Wallet FAQ before choosing where to redeem a card.

What changed in V-Bucks and pass pricing in 2026?
Epic announced changes on March 10, 2026, with changes starting March 19, 2026. These are Epic’s published figures, not a universal price list: pack prices and availability can vary by region, and the current in-game shop is the best place to confirm what applies to an account.

| Battle Pass | Cost and completion award differed under the prior setup | Costs 800 V-Bucks; completion awards 800 V-Bucks. Epic said Bonus Rewards would no longer include V-Bucks. |
Epic also described changes to other V-Bucks packs, the OG, Music, and LEGO Passes, and the Fortnite Crew V-Bucks grant. Consult its March 10, 2026 price announcement for the full details and check the current shop for regional prices and eligibility.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
What to check before redeeming a card
- Use an Epic account: Epic says an account is required to redeem a V-Bucks card.
- Confirm the card’s region matches the account and intended platform, and check whether it is a V-Bucks card or a Fortnite gift card.
- Review current card and platform terms. Epic’s card FAQ says card value is associated with one account on the selected device, cards do not expire or carry a use fee, and the balance cannot be transferred or withdrawn.
- Keep in mind that Epic says V-Bucks themselves cannot be transferred between accounts and unused V-Bucks are not refundable.
Epic’s V-Bucks card terms contain the current formal conditions; refer to them rather than relying on older device requirements or assumptions about a card’s compatibility.
