Uwe Boll responded to the new Street Fighter movie’s poor critical reception with a one-line joke: “Don’t ever bash my movies again.” The German filmmaker is arguing that a heavily promoted studio adaptation receiving harsh reviews makes his own much-criticized video-game films look less uniquely disastrous.

On October 15, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported that Boll shared a negative review of the latest Street Fighter film on Twitter/X and wrote: “Don’t ever bash my movies again.” The post is framed as self-deprecating humor, not a claim that critics have suddenly approved his work. Boll’s point is that game adaptations have a long record of critical failure, so his films should not be treated as a category of their own.
The joke lands because the new movie is a major-studio release built around one of gaming’s best-known fighting franchises, while Boll became synonymous with low-rated adaptations such as House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark.
How critics received the 2026 film
Rotten Tomatoes moved from the low 40s
GamesRadar+ reported an opening Rotten Tomatoes score of 41%, later updated to 45%. The figure reflects a mixed-to-negative critical response rather than a unanimous rejection. GamesRadar+ itself awarded the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars and described it as an overstuffed, hyper-edited, tonally inconsistent film that ends halfway through its story.

Recurring complaints
- Too much plot and too many characters: One GamesRadar+ assessment said the film crams three movies’ worth of material into two hours.
- Uneven tone: Reviews objected to the collision of serious martial-arts drama, broad comedy and frequent dick jokes.
- Fan service over substance: Critics argued that references and recognizable characters do not consistently serve the story.
- An abrupt ending: Several reactions said the movie fails to deliver a satisfying climax and effectively stops before its narrative is complete.
- Weak connection to the games: Awards Watch critic Trace Sauveur wrote that it “doesn’t capture the core of its source material.”
Why some critics still enjoyed it
The response was not uniformly hostile. Aaron Neuwirth of We Live Entertainment called the movie fun, while Slashfilm’s Bill Bria described it as highly watchable. Consequence’s Liz Shannon Miller praised its best stretches as a “deranged live-action cartoon,” suggesting that viewers willing to embrace its excesses may find it entertaining even when the plotting does not hold together.
The live review range illustrates that divide: the Rotten Tomatoes roundup includes a D- from the AV Club’s Jacob Oller, a B- from IndieWire’s Christian Zilko and a 3/5 assessment from Matt Donato.

What the 2026 Street Fighter movie is about
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters after Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. A conspiracy forces the former allies to confront each other and their shared past. The listed cast includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Jason Momoa as Blanka and 50 Cent as Balrog.

That crowded premise helps explain the split reaction. It offers numerous opportunities for game references and character cameos, but the same density can make the central conflict harder to follow and leaves less room for a measured build toward the tournament.

The comparison is therefore about reputation and pattern, not identical circumstances. The 1994 film was widely disliked, and the 2026 version has also drawn sharp criticism, but the newer movie has a documented group of reviewers who regard its chaotic energy as part of the appeal.
Why Boll considers the reviews vindication
In a GamesBeat interview conducted in 2023 and updated June 18, 2025, Boll said that game-based movies existed before him, naming Street Fighter among the earlier examples. He argued that those films made money despite bad reviews and helped create a market for later adaptations. He also said, “I never said Alone in the Dark or whatever was a masterpiece.”

Boll further maintained that critics judged his films collectively as one group and that some earned substantial home-video and television revenue. Those financial claims are Boll’s own statements, not independently verified figures in the available reporting. His “vindication” is consequently rhetorical: the new Street Fighter gives him a fresh example of a prominent adaptation that critics can dislike without proving that every audience member found it worthless.
Is the 2026 movie really that bad?
The fairest answer is that it is divisive, with a clear negative tilt. Viewers looking for a coherent tournament narrative, restrained editing and a conventional payoff may share the strongest complaints. Viewers who enjoy exaggerated performances, rapid-fire jokes and live-action versions of game-like spectacle may respond more positively. The reviews agree most consistently that the film tries to do too much; they disagree on whether that excess makes it an exhausting failure or an enjoyably chaotic cartoon.

That distinction is why Boll’s post works as a joke rather than a serious critical argument. The 2026 film does not erase the weaknesses critics have identified in his adaptations, but its own uneven reception makes it harder to claim that only Boll has produced badly reviewed video-game movies.
