UVA and UVB are both types of ultraviolet radiation that reach Earth’s surface and can harm skin and contribute to skin cancer. UVA is associated with deeper skin penetration and premature aging; UVB is associated with sunburn and changes to the skin’s outer layer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes UVB as causing direct DNA damage and UVA as causing indirect DNA damage. These differences do not make either type harmless or establish that one is always more dangerous. Protect against both.
UVA vs. UVB at a glance
The key differences are where each band tends to affect skin and the kinds of effects associated with it. These are differences in emphasis, not exclusive effects: both UVA and UVB can harm skin.
| Comparison | UVA | UVB |
|---|---|---|
| Skin penetration | Associated with deeper penetration into skin. (NCI) | Associated with effects on the outer layer of skin. (NCI) |
| Typical visible effects | Associated with premature skin aging. (NCI) | Associated with sunburn, darkening, and thickening of the outer skin layer. (NCI) |
| DNA damage description | NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) describes indirect DNA damage. | NCI DCEG describes direct DNA damage. |
| Practical prevention | Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and other measures that protect against both UVA and UVB. (NCI) | Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and other measures that protect against both UVA and UVB. (NCI) |
The NCI DCEG profile of investigator Elizabeth Cahoon states that UVA accounts for 95% and UVB for 5% of the UV radiation reaching Earth’s surface. Those figures describe the radiation reaching the surface as presented in that profile; they should not be treated as fixed proportions for every place or circumstance. NCI DCEG profile

UVA: deeper penetration and premature aging
NCI associates UVA with deeper penetration into the skin and premature skin aging. That is a useful way to remember its typical effects, but it does not mean UVA is the only kind of UV radiation that can contribute to skin harm.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
UVB: sunburn and changes to the outer skin layer
NCI associates UVB with sunburn, darkening, and thickening of the skin’s outer layer. These effects are not a reason to treat UVB as the only band worth avoiding: UVA also contributes to skin harm.
How UVA and UVB affect DNA
NCI DCEG describes UVB as causing direct DNA damage and UVA as causing indirect DNA damage. “Direct” and “indirect” distinguish the broad descriptions used by NCI; they do not mean that UVA’s effects are negligible or that UVB is the only type relevant to DNA damage. Both bands are linked to skin harm and skin cancer. The available comparison does not establish a single overall danger ranking or a quantitative cancer-risk comparison by UV band.

Which is worse for skin?
The NCI sources describe different effects but do not establish that UVA or UVB is categorically worse overall. The answer depends on what effect is being discussed: UVA is associated with deeper penetration and premature aging, while UVB is associated with sunburn and changes to the outer skin layer. Both can damage skin and contribute to skin cancer, so the practical choice is to reduce exposure to both rather than substitute one risk for another.
How to protect yourself from both types
NCI recommends layering sun-protection measures rather than relying on a single one.

- Limit exposure during strong sun. Reduce the time you spend in strong sunlight.
- Cover your skin. Wear long sleeves and pants, and choose clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) when available.
- Wear a wide-brim hat. It helps shield the head and neck, areas that can receive substantial sun exposure.
- Protect your eyes. Use sunglasses that block UV radiation.
- Choose broad-spectrum sunscreen. NCI advises broad-spectrum sunscreen, or a product labeled at least SPF 30 that filters both UVA and UVB. SPF alone does not tell you whether a product covers UVA; look for the broad-spectrum label.
Why protection still matters near windows and reflective surfaces
UV exposure is not limited to direct time outdoors. NCI notes that UV radiation can pass through windows and can reflect off surfaces such as sand, water, snow, and ice. Consider these conditions when deciding how much protection you need, including when you are near a window or spending time around reflective surfaces.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a hat belongs in the protection plan
In her NCI DCEG profile, investigator Elizabeth Cahoon said: “Wear a hat. Eighty-to-ninety percent of the most common skin cancers occur on the head and neck. If everyone wore a hat, a lot of skin cancer cases could be prevented.” This is an attributed statement from Cahoon’s interview context, not a guarantee that wearing a hat prevents every case. A wide-brim hat is one practical layer alongside clothing, sunglasses, exposure limits, and broad-spectrum sunscreen.
