Usually, no. Installing an SSD in your computer will not make online video arrive faster or strengthen a weak Wi-Fi connection. If a video buffers, check the internet connection, Wi-Fi signal, household network traffic, and the streaming app or device before considering storage.

Why an SSD usually does not fix online buffering

Online video travels from a streaming service through its network and your internet provider to your home connection and playback device. Buffering or reduced picture quality can result from congestion along that path, a weak home connection, or other devices using the network. Netflix outlines these factors in its streaming and buffering guidance.

An SSD can make a difference when a computer is slowed by local storage access. That is different from improving the network connection that delivers a video stream. There is no basis here for promising that an SSD upgrade will raise streaming bandwidth or prevent online buffering.

Check whether the connection is fast enough for the service

Measure connection speed on the device you use to watch, then compare it with the streaming service’s guidance. Netflix recommends stable speeds of 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p FHD, and 15 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are Netflix-specific recommendations, not universal guarantees for every service, household, or viewing setup. See Netflix’s recommended internet speeds.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

A speed test can help identify a slow connection, but a single result does not establish that every part of the connection is stable during playback. If speeds are persistently low across devices or services, contact your internet provider.

Troubleshoot buffering in a useful order

  1. Check how widespread the problem is. Try another service, title, or device. An issue limited to one app or title may be specific to that service or playback setup; problems across services and devices point more toward the home network or internet connection.
  2. Test the connection on the playback device. Compare the result with the relevant service’s speed guidance. If possible, try another network or move the device closer to the router to see whether the connection improves. YouTube also recommends checking the connection and trying a different one where available; see YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting steps.
  3. Reduce network competition and improve Wi-Fi conditions. Pause downloads or other heavy network use, and try improving the router’s placement or the device’s signal. Netflix notes that multiple devices sharing a connection and home-network conditions can affect playback.
  4. Lower video quality temporarily. A lower setting can help determine whether the current connection can sustain playback more reliably. It changes the stream’s data demand; it does not repair the underlying connection.
  5. Restart the app or device. Clear the app cache if that option is available, and check for app or device updates. These are among YouTube’s suggested troubleshooting steps.
  6. Escalate based on the pattern. If several services fail on multiple devices, investigate the router, home connection, or ISP. If the fault is isolated to one device, check its software and supported playback configuration.

When storage might be relevant

Consider storage only when there is a separate sign of a local storage bottleneck, such as slow access to local files or a storage-heavy server workload. For a NAS serving locally stored media, SSD cache is workload-dependent: Synology says it mainly helps frequently reused random I/O, while large sequential reads such as HD video streaming benefit little. Its DSM SSD cache guidance and DSM 7.1 SSD Cache White Paper describe those limits, including minimal expected gains for single-channel HD streaming.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

That NAS guidance concerns serving locally stored files, not watching a video delivered by an online service. Check actual disk activity and the workload before treating an SSD or cache as a solution. Local video editing, downloads, and general computer responsiveness are also different workloads from online streaming.

Match the symptom to the first check

Likely cause Clue First check
Internet plan or ISP route Slow playback or speed across multiple devices or services Run a speed test on the playback device; contact the ISP if the problem persists.
Wi-Fi signal or interference Playback improves nearer the router or on another network Check router placement, distance, obstacles, and interference.
Network congestion Playback worsens when several household devices are active Pause downloads or competing use, then check playback again.
Service, app, or device The issue is limited to one app, title, or device Restart or update the app and device; try another service or device.
Local storage workload Local files or server tasks are slow, not just online video Check disk activity and workload; SSD cache is better suited to repeated random access than sequential video reads.

What about live streams?

Live playback also depends on the internet connection and its stability. Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guidance identifies download speed and an unstable internet connection as relevant factors. An SSD does not remedy a slow or unstable connection to the service.
