Kirigami uses cuts as well as folds to turn a flat sheet into an opening, moving, or three-dimensional form. Those cuts leave flexible connections that act like hinges. It is worth considering when a design needs to expand, create open space, or provide ventilation; it is not automatically the best choice for a form meant to fold into the smallest possible package.
How kirigami turns a sheet into a functional form
In kirigami, cuts divide a sheet into connected sections. The uncut material between them becomes a set of flexible links or hinges, so pulling, pushing, or folding the sheet can make it open or rise out of plane. The result depends on where the cuts are placed and how the sheet is actuated; a pattern does not necessarily deploy by itself.
That makes kirigami distinct from a purely decorative cutout. Its geometry can change the sheet’s movement and final shape. The ASME overview describes origami as tending to compact a structure through folding, while kirigami can open material through cuts. ASME’s engineering overview identifies deployment and mechanical metamaterials as promising directions, not as proof that every proposed application is already a working product.

Start with the desired behavior rather than the name of the technique. Kirigami is a candidate when the deployed design benefits from openings, ventilation, or expansion from a flat sheet. Folding without cuts may be more suitable when compacting the material is the main goal.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Opening or ventilation matters: Cuts can create gaps as the sheet expands.
- The form must deploy: A cut pattern can let a flat structure change into a larger or three-dimensional shape.
- The structure must compact: Compare the desired packed form and deployment path with folding-based alternatives before choosing cuts.
- The deployed structure must do work: If it needs to carry loads or lock in place, treat those as engineering requirements, not as results guaranteed by the pattern.
ASME discusses space solar panels and emergency shelters as possible application examples. These are prospective uses, not validated commercial products established by that overview. It quotes research co-author Levi Dudte describing deployable structures and mechanical metamaterials as the strongest case for kirigami, while also noting that the field was at an early stage when the article appeared in 2020. Read the ASME overview.
Design choices that determine how a kirigami pattern behaves
Target geometry and amount of opening
Define the deployed shape and how much open area it needs before choosing a cut layout. A pattern that opens widely may not produce the surface or support a different design requires. For plate-like systems, the intended final geometry and how flat it must become after deployment are also central design constraints.

Actuation and deployment path
Decide what will move the pattern: a pull, a push, a fold, or another controlled action. Some patterns have energy barriers, so a mathematically specified shape may require a particular direction or sequence of movement to deploy. Consider not only the final form but also whether a person or mechanism can reliably reach it.
Material, thickness, and scale
Paper is useful for observing how cuts affect motion, but a paper mock-up does not establish that the same layout will work in film, fabric, rubber, or rigid panels. Material stiffness, thickness, and hinge proportions affect the result. NIST summarizes nanoscale-film work in which cut geometry and the films’ intrinsic stress produce different out-of-plane configurations; stability and shape depend in part on hinge geometry relative to material thickness. NIST’s summary of nanoscale kirigami structures illustrates why scale and material cannot be treated as afterthoughts.

What the deployed design must support
A structure that only needs to hold its own shape has different requirements from one that must carry a load. Thick-panel research makes locking hinges and load-bearing behavior explicit design concerns. A pattern that opens successfully in a light paper model should not be assumed to support a real-world load.
Fabrication and repeatability
Consider whether the cuts and connections can be made accurately and consistently at the chosen scale. Folding-engineering literature identifies manufacturing, thickness accommodation, testing, and sensitivity to imperfections as wider challenges. These concerns become especially important when a design must deploy repeatedly or perform a structural function. The 2024 review of origami engineering discusses these broader engineering challenges.

A practical way to explore a functional design
- State the function. Specify whether the design should open, ventilate, form a three-dimensional shape, compact for storage, or carry a load.
- Sketch the target shape and movement. Mark where the sheet must remain connected and how you expect it to move. Treat this as a hypothesis about the mechanism, not a guarantee of deployment.
- Make a simple paper mock-up. Use it to observe how cut placement changes opening and shape. This is an exploratory model, not a validated pattern or a test of another material.
- Identify the actuation needed. Try to determine what must be pulled, pushed, or folded, and whether the motion follows a practical path to the intended deployed shape.
- Rebuild and test in the intended material and scale. Evaluate that material directly; differences in stiffness, thickness, and hinge proportions can change the behavior.
- Test the actual function. If the design must lock, carry load, or deploy reliably, assess those requirements in the intended configuration rather than inferring performance from a paper model.
These steps are a general design approach, not a tested beginner pattern. The cited sources do not establish a preferred paper weight, a specific starter layout, or a tool-safety procedure. For load-bearing or safety-critical designs, application-specific engineering validation is necessary.

Kirigami research spans very different scales and materials, so examples should not be treated as interchangeable. NIST’s account concerns nanoscale films and controllable three-dimensional configurations. Thick-panel studies address the additional challenge of making structures that fold compactly, deploy into a flat plate, and carry loads.

A 2025 Engineering Structures study describes deployable, load-bearing kirigami plates and uses simulation and experiments to assess performance. See the study on deployable and load-bearing kirigami plates. A separate 2025 Communications Engineering paper reports paper, 3D-printed, and metal prototypes for thick-panel origami-kirigami structures, showing that changes in material and scale are part of the design problem. See the study of thick-panel structures and modular arrays.
These studies demonstrate engineering approaches and specific research systems; they do not establish that a craft-scale paper pattern will work unchanged in a large panel or that every proposed application is ready for deployment. Use them as evidence that geometry, actuation, material, hinges, and performance requirements must be designed together.
