Useful Alexa commands let you ask a question, add something to a list, play music, or trigger a routine with your voice. Try phrases such as “Alexa, what’s the weather today in Boston?”, “Alexa, add batteries to my shopping list,” and “Alexa, play jazz.” They are examples, not guaranteed scripts: results depend on your device, account settings, region, and connected services.
What can I ask Alexa?
Amazon describes Alexa as a way to ask questions and make requests using your voice. Start with a direct request beginning with “Alexa,” then say what you want. These examples illustrate common tasks; exact results and available services can vary.
Get a quick answer
- “Alexa, what’s the weather today in Boston?” Replace Boston with your location; weather information depends on location settings and regional availability.
Add a household reminder
- “Alexa, add batteries to my shopping list.” Shopping-list behavior and any related shopping features can depend on your account and region.
Play music
- “Alexa, play jazz.” Playback depends on the music service connected to your account and its availability. Amazon says eligible Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan users may receive customized music playback based on voice; that behavior should not be assumed for every plan or service.
For these basic requests, you do not need a smart bulb or plug. You do need an Alexa-enabled device or another supported way to access Alexa. Amazon describes Echo devices as hands-free Alexa devices. See Amazon’s Alexa FAQ for its overview of voice requests.

A routine is a shortcut that groups actions behind one trigger. Instead of making several separate requests, you might say “Alexa, start my day” to run a routine that turns on compatible smart lights and tells you the weather. The phrase only works if you create a matching routine and have the services or devices its actions require.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Choose a trigger and group actions
Depending on the setup, a routine can start from a spoken phrase, a specific time, sound detection, presence detection, or an alarm. Possible actions include playing music, giving a briefing or traffic report, starting a skill, making a call, controlling compatible Fire TV, arming a connected security system, or turning compatible smart-home devices on or off. Some actions have additional settings based on the chosen event or device.
Smart-home actions require compatible, connected products. Confirm compatibility for the exact device and setup; a routine that controls lights or a security system will not work without the relevant equipment and connection.

Voice ID can personalize some supported experiences, but it does not make every Alexa feature personal or available on every device. Amazon lists possible personalization for calling and messaging, calendars, flash briefings, music and podcast service defaults, reminders, shopping restrictions, and supported skills. Availability depends on the feature, profile, service, plan, and compatible device. Check Amazon’s Voice ID help for supported uses and setup information.

Can I review or delete Alexa voice recordings?
Amazon says that when an Echo detects its wake word, a visual or audible indicator signals that recording is being streamed to the cloud. Amazon also says users can review and delete account-associated voice recordings under Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app or on Echo Show devices: open Review Alexa History. This describes the controls Amazon documents for those interfaces; it is not a claim about all data retention or every device configuration. More information is available in Amazon’s Alexa privacy help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might a command not work?
- The request is unavailable in your region or account. Try another supported service or check the account and location settings.
- A routine has not been created. A phrase such as “start my day” is only an example until you set it up as a routine trigger.
- The routine needs connected hardware. Check that the smart-home product is compatible, connected, and included in the routine.
- The service or plan differs. Music, personalization, and other linked-service behavior can vary by provider and account plan.
Amazon’s developer guidance recommends direct command phrasing and validating voice examples on the device they are intended to represent. Treat sample commands as starting points rather than guaranteed scripts. Amazon does not provide a named, dated ranking in the cited materials establishing these as the most-used Alexa commands, so they are useful examples rather than a popularity list.
