The iPhone Action button is a customizable physical button that replaces the Ring/Silent switch on supported models. Press and hold it to run the function assigned in Settings; depending on the assignment, that may open a tool or toggle a setting such as Silent Mode.
What does the Action button do on iPhone?
Apple describes the Action button as a control for a function you use often. Unlike an on-screen button, it is a physical control on the iPhone. Its default assignment is Silent Mode, but you can change it to another supported function. Apple’s iPhone user guide says to press and hold the button to perform its assigned action. For Silent Mode, a further press and hold switches back.
Available assignments include:
- Silent Mode: Switch between Silent and Ring for calls and alerts.
- Focus: Turn on a Focus to silence notifications and filter distractions.
- Camera: Open the Camera app.
- Visual Intelligence: Learn about nearby places and objects; Apple Intelligence is required.
- Flashlight: Turn on the flashlight.
- Voice Memo: Record notes or musical ideas.
- Recognize Music: Identify music with Shazam.
- Translate: Translate phrases or have a conversation in another language.
- Magnifier: Use the iPhone as a magnifying glass.
- Controls: Open a selected control.
- Shortcut: Open an app or run a selected shortcut.
- Accessibility: Quickly use a selected accessibility feature.
- No Action: Leave the button unassigned.
How do you customize the Action button?
- Open Settings and tap Action Button.
- Swipe across the available functions to choose one.
- If the selected function offers additional choices, select the specific control, shortcut, or accessibility feature you want.
Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility require a specific selection beneath the main function. If you choose one of these categories without selecting an item, the button does nothing.
Which iPhones have an Action button?
The button is available only on supported iPhone models. Apple’s overview of iPhone controls gives iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro as examples. These are examples, not a complete compatibility list; check Apple’s documentation for the model you use.

What should you know about Visual Intelligence?
Visual Intelligence is one possible Action button assignment, but it requires Apple Intelligence. Apple documents Action button access to Visual Intelligence on iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Its Visual Intelligence guide also describes access through the Lock Screen and Control Center on those models. Apple Intelligence availability depends on device, language, and region, so the option may not be available to every user.
