For reliable limits on an iPhone, use Screen Time, not a Shortcut. Screen Time can set daily app or category allowances and scheduled Downtime; with Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps become unavailable during that window. Shortcuts can automate tasks and respond to supported events, but Apple’s documentation does not establish that a Shortcut can lock Screen Time limits or block app access.

Set a daily limit for apps or categories

Apple’s Screen Time support instructions use Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit. Choose a category or select individual apps, set the daily time allowance, and save. You can customize the allowance by day if you want different limits on different days.

In Apple’s current iOS 27 guide, the relevant controls are described as Time Allowances and Schedules. Labels and menus can differ by software version, so follow the names shown on your iPhone if they do not match the older App Limits path. Apple says the latest schedule and allowance features require iOS 27 or later on the relevant Apple devices.

A limit is not necessarily a hard block: Apple notes that Screen Time limits can be ignored after they are reached by default. If your goal is an enforced no-use period, configure Downtime and its blocking option rather than relying on a daily allowance alone.

Schedule Downtime when you want apps unavailable

Downtime sets a recurring period when most apps are unavailable. In Screen Time, configure the schedule for the days and times you want. Apple says the phone sends a reminder five minutes before scheduled Downtime begins; its support instructions also note that this reminder can be ignored.

To make the scheduled window restrictive, turn on Block at Downtime. Apple documents this as the setting that makes restricted apps unavailable during Downtime. Apps and contacts you designate as allowed can remain available, so review those choices if you want the window to cover more of your phone.

What a Shortcut can—and cannot—do here

Apple describes Shortcuts as a way to combine actions into tasks that interact with apps and device content. A personal automation can start in response to supported events, including app events. That makes Shortcuts potentially useful as a reminder or transition aid, but it does not make an automation a Screen Time control.

Apple’s cited Shortcuts documentation does not describe an action sequence that imposes or locks a Screen Time allowance. It also does not establish that a Shortcut can prevent you from opening an app. Avoid treating a suggested automation recipe as a dependable block: the available actions, prompts, and automatic-run behavior can depend on the device and the actions used. Check the choices actually shown in Shortcuts on your iPhone before relying on any reminder workflow.

Some personal automations can be configured to run automatically, while others may require confirmation; individual actions can also have their own automatic-run requirements. Apple’s personal-automation guide is versioned for iOS 26, so its interface details should not be assumed to be unchanged in iOS 27.

Check software and device coverage

Apple says the latest Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances features require iOS 27 or later across the relevant Apple devices. For a Family Sharing setup using these features, Apple says all devices must be on the required current operating-system versions. If a control is missing or behaves differently, check the device’s software version and the current Screen Time guide for its interface.
