Yes—your application can call a provider’s remote JSON-RPC endpoint instead of running a blockchain daemon, but hosted coverage is not established equally for all three networks. Provider documentation describes hosted Bitcoin and Litecoin access; a hosted Decred endpoint was not verified. Before building against any endpoint, check that it supports your network and required methods, and secure the connection and credentials.

What changes when you use a remote endpoint?

JSON-RPC calls are handled by a chain daemon. If you do not operate that daemon yourself, your application sends requests to someone else’s node or to another documented service interface. That removes the need to maintain the node, but it does not remove the need to choose a service, protect access credentials, or decide how much to trust the service’s data and availability.

Hosted access is not automatically a wallet service. A node endpoint may provide chain data without offering wallet methods, holding keys, or supporting transaction signing. Establish the custody and key-handling boundary separately from the RPC connection.

What is documented for each chain?

Chain Documented interface details Hosted access established here
Bitcoin Bitcoin Core documents a root JSON-RPC endpoint and a wallet-specific /wallet/<walletname>/ endpoint for wallet requests when multiple wallets are loaded. RPC behavior can change between major releases. Bloq documentation describes Bitcoin mainnet and testnet access through REST and JSON-RPC. It does not establish current commercial terms or method coverage for a particular application.
Litecoin Litecoin Core maintains JSON-RPC for its daemon. Its documentation says RPC is enabled by default for the headless daemon and disabled by default for the GUI unless enabled. Bloq documentation describes Litecoin mainnet access through REST and JSON-RPC. It does not establish current commercial terms or method coverage for a particular application.
Decred dcrd provides chain-related RPC; wallet-related RPC is provided through dcrwallet. Decred documents HTTP POST and WebSockets, with WebSockets preferred in the dcrd documentation. No hosted Decred JSON-RPC provider was verified. Decred’s own daemon and wallet documentation explains software interfaces, not a third-party managed endpoint.

How do Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Decred RPC differ?

Bitcoin Core

Use the endpoint and method documentation for the specific Bitcoin Core major version you target. When multiple wallets are loaded, wallet requests use the wallet-specific path rather than the root endpoint. Bitcoin Core’s JSON-RPC security guidance states: “Do not enable RPC connections over the public Internet.” It says remote access should be confined to secure private networks or otherwise secured connections, such as VPN or SSH/stunnel port forwarding. Authentication does not encrypt traffic, so credentials can be exposed in transit.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Litecoin Core

Whether RPC is enabled by default depends on whether you run the headless daemon or the GUI. Litecoin Core also warns about remote access and the RPC protocol’s lack of encryption. A managed endpoint is a separate service: assess its transport and authentication protections rather than assuming they match a locally configured daemon.

Decred

First determine whether a required method belongs to dcrd or dcrwallet; the two programs have distinct roles. Decred describes its RPC as TLS-enabled by default when configured, and says the RPC server does not run until credentials are configured. Its documentation describes the dcrd API as compatible with the original bitcoind/bitcoin-qt API, but compatibility does not guarantee identical methods or wallet behavior. Check the method reference for the daemon and wallet version you will use.

How can you evaluate a hosted endpoint?

Bloq documentation describes hosted Bitcoin and Litecoin nodes accessible through REST and JSON-RPC, including a JSON-RPC request example using HTTP POST and node credentials. This establishes documented interface coverage, not current pricing, plan availability, service-level commitments, or Decred support. Confirm the provider’s current documentation and terms before relying on the service.

  • Chain and network: Confirm the exact chain and network, such as Bitcoin mainnet versus testnet, rather than assuming one endpoint covers both.
  • Methods and versions: Verify every required method and the relevant daemon/API version. Check whether wallet methods are included if your application needs them.
  • Connection and access: Obtain the endpoint, credentials, supported transport, and setup instructions directly from the provider. Do not infer a URL or credentials from another chain’s configuration.
  • Security and privacy: Check for TLS protection, credential scope, request logging, and data-retention practices. Keep credentials private and limit their use to the application that needs them.
  • Operational fit: Ask about quotas, throughput, outage handling, support, and any uptime commitments. These provider-specific details are not established by the Bloq documentation described above.
  • Trust model: Consider whether your application can rely on data returned by a third party, or whether it needs an independently operated node or additional verification.

What if you need to connect to a self-operated node remotely?

Do not make a Bitcoin Core or Litecoin Core RPC listener publicly reachable as a shortcut. Their project documentation warns about remote exposure and unencrypted RPC traffic. If remote access to your own daemon is necessary, follow that implementation’s security guidance and use a properly secured private path, such as a VPN or an appropriately configured SSH or TLS tunnel. For Decred, configure authentication before enabling its RPC server and use its documented TLS and connection options.

What should you settle before writing the integration?

  1. Define the call: List the chain, network, methods, and whether the application needs chain-only or wallet-related functionality.
  2. Select the interface: Confirm that a provider documents the exact chain, network, transport, and methods you need. If Decred is required, obtain current provider documentation that explicitly establishes Decred support.
  3. Check version-specific behavior: Match method references to the deployed daemon/API version, particularly for Bitcoin Core, where behavior may change across major releases.
  4. Configure access securely: Use the provider’s documented endpoint and authentication details, protect credentials, and verify transport encryption. Do not expose a self-operated RPC listener to the public Internet.
  5. Validate boundaries and operations: Confirm wallet/key custody expectations, limits, logging, data retention, outage handling, and commercial terms before depending on the endpoint in production.
