App Store reviews can help you spot user-reported problems, but a low rating or repeated complaint is a lead to investigate—not proof of a software defect. Apple’s App Store Connect API provides an official way to retrieve customer reviews, with filters and context such as territory, rating, date, app version, and published developer responses.
What App Store reviews can—and cannot—tell you
A review may describe what failed, the circumstances around it, or an app update after which the problem appeared. Those details can point your team toward a possible bug, especially when multiple reviews describe a similar symptom.
Reviews are qualitative reports, not confirmed defect records. A low star rating alone does not identify a technical cause, and repeated wording does not establish that reports share the same root cause. Treat each cluster as a hypothesis to check against logs, support cases, reproduction steps, and your own testing.

Apple’s customerReviews resource represents ratings and written reviews that customers submit and that the App Store displays. It supports listing reviews for an app or a specific app-store version, filtering by territory and rating, sorting by date or rating, including or excluding published developer responses, and reading an individual review’s details.

Apple describes the App Store Connect API as a REST API for automating actions in App Store Connect. This is not an unrestricted public-data endpoint: requests require a JSON Web Token (JWT) created with an API key associated with an App Store Connect account.
Get the access and permissions in place
-
Ask the Account Holder to request App Store Connect API access. Apple reviews access requests case by case.
-
After access is available, have an eligible team member create an API key in App Store Connect. Apple documents role-based team keys and individual keys. Individual-key eligibility includes Account Holder, Admin, App Manager, Customer Support, Developer, and Marketing roles, unless an Admin or Account Holder has revoked that ability.

Use the key to create a JWT for API requests. Follow Apple’s current API key setup guidance and token-generation guidance for the required key material and token format.
Apple identifies Customer Support as the role that analyzes and responds to App Store customer reviews. Review access and response work therefore sit within App Store Connect roles and permissions.
Retrieve reviews with Python without guessing the implementation
The available article excerpt for this topic mentions setting up an Apify account and API token, but it does not establish which Actor, endpoint, Python packages, request flow, pagination method, or output format the original tutorial uses. Those details should not be assumed. Before running a hosted collection workflow, verify its current documentation, terms, and complete implementation.
If you build a Python collector against Apple’s API instead, use Apple’s current API documentation to confirm the resource path, request parameters, response structure, pagination behavior, and authorization requirements. The documentation establishes that review listings can be filtered and sorted, but the exact runnable code and package versions are not established here; avoid copying an unverified snippet into a production workflow.
Preserve context when grouping complaints
Keep the dimensions Apple exposes alongside the review text. They help you compare like with like, but they do not make a sample representative of all users.
-
Territory: retain the territory filter used to collect each sample.
-
Rating: record the star rating and any rating filter, rather than treating all low scores as equivalent.
-
Date: keep the review date and the sorting or collection window in your analysis.

App version: where available, distinguish version-specific reviews from app-level listings.
-
Published response: note whether a developer response is included, since a response can add context but is not itself evidence that a bug was fixed.
For a suspected issue, compare complaints within these contexts before deciding that similar phrases describe the same failure. A cluster that appears only in one version or territory may suggest a useful investigation path; it does not by itself establish cause.
Turn complaint clusters into engineering work
-
Collect review text together with its available date, rating, territory, app version, and response context.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Group reports by the user-visible symptom, not by star rating alone. Keep ambiguous reports separate rather than forcing them into a cluster.
-
Translate each cluster into a testable question: what action failed, under what conditions, and which versions or territories are represented?
-
Check the hypothesis against support records, crash or telemetry data, release changes, and reproduction attempts available to your team.
-
Track confirmed defects separately from unverified review signals. Update your assessment when reproducible evidence or additional context changes it.

Where this approach is limited
Reviews reflect the people who chose to leave feedback, not necessarily the full user base. The API’s filters help define a sample; they do not prove that a territory, rating range, or date window represents everyone using the app. Nor does access to written reviews guarantee enough technical detail to reproduce a problem.
Apple’s documented resource is suitable for retrieving and organizing customer feedback, while confirming a defect remains an engineering task. Use review mining to prioritize questions worth investigating, not as a substitute for diagnosis.
