If you regularly use hotel, airport, café or other public Wi‑Fi, NordVPN can reduce the risk of sending traffic over an untrusted network—but it does not make a fake hotspot trustworthy or guarantee protection from every online threat. The practical attraction of the current offer is straightforward: one subscription supports up to 10 devices at the same time, with features such as a kill switch, DNS-leak protection and automatic connection options. Because NordVPN changes plan names, introductory prices and renewal terms by country and over time, check the live checkout page before buying.
Why public Wi‑Fi needs extra care
Public networks are convenient, but you usually cannot verify who operates them or who else is connected. A criminal can create a hotspot with a convincing name, and an ordinary venue network can still be poorly configured. NordVPN’s own guidance highlights fake hotspots and untrusted networks as risks. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN service, making interception on the local network harder. It cannot identify every malicious website, stop you from entering credentials into a phishing page, or turn a rogue hotspot into a legitimate one.
For that reason, treat a VPN as one layer of protection. Keep your operating system and apps updated, use HTTPS, enable multifactor authentication where available, and avoid entering sensitive information when a network behaves unexpectedly.

NordVPN says a single subscription covers up to 10 simultaneous devices, including phones, tablets and computers. The support documentation uses the same limit. You can therefore protect a laptop, phone and tablet while travelling without purchasing a separate account for each person or device, provided the total number connected at once stays within 10.

A technical limit when devices share a server
NordVPN’s support guidance notes that when multiple devices connect to the same server, they must use different VPN protocols. Most users will not need to manage this manually because the apps select settings automatically, but it explains why a connection can behave differently when several devices are online together.
Using a router
A router configured with NordVPN counts as one device slot. It can protect other devices on that router’s network, which is useful in a hotel room or temporary apartment. Router setup is more involved than installing an app, and the exact instructions depend on the router firmware and supported VPN configuration.

Connecting on a hotel, airport or café network
Many public networks use a captive portal: a browser page where you accept terms, enter a room number or provide another form of venue login. NordVPN’s support documentation specifically describes these portals at hotels, airports and cafés.

- Complete the captive-portal login. Open a browser if the sign-in page does not appear automatically, then accept the venue’s terms or enter the requested details.
- Open NordVPN and connect. Start the VPN only after the portal has granted network access; otherwise the sign-in page may not load.
- Reconnect after interruptions. If the venue disconnects you, repeat the portal login and reconnect NordVPN.
- Enable automatic protection. In the app’s connection settings, configure automatic connection on untrusted Wi‑Fi where that option is available.
If the portal will not appear, temporarily disconnect the VPN, visit a normal HTTP test page or the venue’s sign-in address, finish authentication, and then reconnect. Avoid using an open network for sensitive activity until the VPN is active.

What to check in the current offer
The official pricing presentation promotes public-Wi‑Fi protection, Threat Protection and coverage for 10 devices. The commercial details are not fixed: plan names, promotional pricing, renewal pricing and offer end dates can change by geography and date. Compare the checkout total—not only the headline monthly equivalent—with the amount that will be charged when the introductory term ends.

Limits to keep in mind
- A VPN does not make a fake hotspot safe or prevent phishing, malware, account takeover or unsafe downloads.
- Captive portals may require a disconnect-and-reconnect sequence each time the venue’s Wi‑Fi session expires.
- Performance can vary with the venue network, distance to the VPN server and protocol selected. NordVPN’s published speed references are vendor-reported tests from Artifact Security in June 2026 and West Coast Labs in October 2025, not an independent test of your location.
- The 10-device figure is simultaneous use, not an unlimited number of devices connected at once.
