Yes—often you can use Pro Tools without buying a separate external audio interface. You still need a compatible playback device that Pro Tools can select: a Mac’s built-in audio through Core Audio, or a Windows device exposed through WASAPI or ASIO may work. Whether your computer’s device appears and functions depends on your Pro Tools version, operating system, and drivers.
What “without an audio interface” means
Pro Tools needs an audio device for playback, but that does not always mean a separate USB or Thunderbolt box. Avid’s playback-engine documentation describes supported routes as Core Audio on Mac and WASAPI (audio only) or ASIO on Windows. Its supported-hardware listing includes Core Audio and WASAPI for Pro Tools Intro, Artist, Studio, and Ultimate. Avid’s use of “valid audio interface” should therefore be understood as a valid device and playback route—not necessarily an external interface. Avid’s Playback Engine explanation and supported hardware information describe the relevant compatibility details.
Built-in playback is most relevant if you want to open, edit, or listen to a session. It does not guarantee that every built-in sound chip will appear in Pro Tools or that every input and output will be available. Check the device list on your own computer and confirm compatibility with the installed Pro Tools release.
How to select your computer’s built-in audio
- Open the Playback Engine menu. In Pro Tools, go to Setup > Playback Engine.
- Choose an available built-in device. Select it from the Playback Engine dropdown if it appears. On Mac, Pro Tools uses Core Audio; on Windows, Avid documents WASAPI and ASIO, with WASAPI limited to audio-only use. The exact device names depend on your computer and installed drivers. Avid’s Playback Engine instructions explain the selection.
- Check the session’s I/O setup. If the session’s inputs or outputs do not match the selected device, open Setup > I/O and use the default I/O settings where appropriate. Pro Tools adapts software I/O to the selected Playback Engine and may remap output buses to match the device’s hardware outputs.
- Check where your computer sends sound. Confirm that the operating system or device routes playback to the headphones or speakers you intend to use. Pro Tools selecting a device does not by itself ensure that the computer’s output is connected to the right destination.
Avid describes the role of the setting this way: “The Playback Engine in Pro Tools is the heart of its signal routing, as this is how the software routing connects to the hardware routing.” — Avid Support, last updated July 9, 2026.

When an external interface is useful
An external USB or Thunderbolt interface is worth considering when your work requires physical connections that built-in audio does not provide. Avid’s setup guidance covers selecting an interface and assigning its input and output channels; its Pro Tools 2026.4 notes say other Core Audio or ASIO audio devices require an available USB or Thunderbolt port. Avid’s setup guide and 2026.4 release notes provide the relevant details.
- Recording microphones or instruments: An interface can provide dedicated microphone or instrument inputs.
- Monitoring: It can provide dedicated headphone and speaker outputs for your setup.
- More connections: The number and type of inputs and outputs you need may make an external device more suitable than built-in audio.
- Driver and connection compatibility: Confirm that the device works with your operating system and Pro Tools version, and that your computer has the required connection.
If you only need to edit a session or hear playback, an external interface is not automatically required when a supported built-in device is available. If you need to record live sources, decide based on the physical inputs and outputs your work requires.

Check your Pro Tools and operating-system compatibility
Support depends on the exact release, operating system, device, and driver. Avid’s Pro Tools 2026.4 release notes list macOS Sonoma 14.8.x, Sequoia 15.7.x, or Tahoe 26.3.x, and Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. They also specify 16 GB RAM and an internet connection for installation and activation, among other requirements. These are requirements for that release, not blanket requirements for every Pro Tools version. Consult the Pro Tools 2026.4 release notes and Avid’s supported-hardware information for the version you intend to run.
For Windows, note the distinction between the documented routes: WASAPI is described as audio-only, while ASIO is also supported. Avid’s current playback-engine article was last updated July 9, 2026; protocol support and operating-system qualification can change, so use the documentation for your installed version rather than assuming another release behaves the same way.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Why older ASIO4ALL advice may not apply
Avid’s historical Pro Tools | First system-requirements page said Windows users could install ASIO4ALL to use a PC’s built-in audio I/O. That guidance applies to the legacy Pro Tools | First context and should not be treated as a universal workaround for current Pro Tools releases. Avid’s Pro Tools | First requirements page is the source for that older note.
Avid’s 2022.6 Reference Guide also documents built-in Mac audio via Core Audio, but it predates the 2026.4 requirements. For current setup decisions, prioritize the documentation matching your release. Avid’s 2022.6 Reference Guide provides the historical Mac instructions.
