To find places near a latitude and longitude in JavaScript, send the coordinate as the center of a nearby search and specify the search area, result fields, and—if needed—a place category. With Google Maps JavaScript, use the Places library’s Place.searchNearby(). Use browser geolocation only when your app needs to obtain the visitor’s current coordinates; it is separate from the places query.
Choose a nearby search, not reverse geocoding
A nearby search answers “what points of interest are around this coordinate?” and returns places your application can display or process. Reverse geocoding answers “what address or place text corresponds to this coordinate?” If you need restaurants near a point, use nearby search; if you need an address for the point itself, use reverse geocoding. Mapbox documents both POI search and coordinate reverse lookup through its Search Box API, and offers Search JS for web integration: Mapbox Search JS.
Search nearby with Google Maps JavaScript
Google Maps JavaScript provides Place.searchNearby() in the Places library. The request takes a location restriction centered on your coordinate, a list of fields to return, and optional place-type and ranking preferences. Google’s documentation requires Places API (New) to be enabled in the Google Cloud project. Its example requests a place’s display name, location, formatted address, and Google Maps URL: Google Maps JavaScript Nearby Search.

Build the request around the feature
- Set the search center to the supplied latitude and longitude.
- Define the search area with a location restriction. Google’s example calculates a radius from map bounds and caps it at 50,000 meters.
- Request only fields your interface uses, such as a name, coordinates, or address.
- Use
includedPrimaryTypesor the related type filters to limit results to a category such as restaurants, cafes, or parks. - Choose distance ranking when closeness matters most, or popularity ranking when you want prominent places rather than the nearest ones first.
The result objects can be used to populate map markers. Check the current API reference for request syntax and available fields, as the exact data your feature needs determines what to request.

Use the Places API web service when you need an HTTP request
If you are calling Google’s Places API (New) web service instead of the Maps JavaScript library, send an HTTP POST to https://places.googleapis.com/v1/places:searchNearby. Put the center coordinate and radius in locationRestriction.circle, provide an API key, and include an X-Goog-FieldMask header naming the fields to return. Google requires a field mask; omitting it produces an error. The radius must be greater than zero and no more than 50,000 meters. Google also notes that field masks help avoid unnecessary processing and billing charges, and that requested fields map to different SKU groupings. See the Google Places API Nearby Search documentation for the request format and field details.
Get coordinates from the browser only when you need the visitor’s location
If the app already has a latitude and longitude—from a saved location, user input, or another part of the application—pass those coordinates to the nearby-search request directly. If it should search around the visitor, first request their position through browser geolocation, then use the returned coordinates as the search center. Geolocation is a way to acquire coordinates, not part of the place-search operation; the W3C specification describes the browser device-location API: W3C Geolocation specification.

Choose a provider based on your application
Google Maps JavaScript is a direct fit when you need categorized nearby places and intend to display them on a Google map. Mapbox is an alternative if your application already uses its search stack or needs its documented POI search and geocoding workflows.
