GitHub Copilot can suggest C# code as you type, answer questions in IDE chat, and—where agent mode is available—edit multiple files and propose terminal commands. To use it well, set it up in your IDE, give it focused context, and review every change before relying on it. GitHub lists C# among the languages Copilot works especially well with; that is a product description, not a guarantee that generated code is correct.
What you need to get started
GitHub lists Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Xcode among IDEs that support Copilot. The exact setup and feature set depend on the editor. GitHub’s IDE quickstart calls for Copilot access, the relevant extension, and signing in to GitHub.
Visual Studio for Windows prerequisites
For Visual Studio, GitHub’s code-suggestion guide specifies Visual Studio 2022 version 17.8 or later, the Copilot extension, and a GitHub account added to Visual Studio. It describes limited access through Copilot Free and full access through a paid plan. Access terms and software versions can change, so check the current guide and your organization’s policy before setup.

Set up Copilot in your IDE
- Choose and update a supported IDE. For the Visual Studio instructions above, use Visual Studio 2022 version 17.8 or later.
- Confirm that your GitHub account has Copilot access and that your organization permits the features you intend to use.
- Install or enable the Copilot extension for that IDE, following its current setup instructions.
- Sign in to GitHub from the IDE. In Visual Studio, add the GitHub account to Visual Studio.
- Open a C# file and try a small inline suggestion, then open Copilot Chat if you want to ask a question or request a focused edit.
Copilot’s feature matrix is marked public preview and subject to change; do not assume every IDE offers the same features or controls.

How to get useful C# suggestions
Give inline completions a clear starting point
With a C# file open, type a method signature or a comment that describes the behavior you want. GitHub’s Visual Studio guide demonstrates prompts such as a date-calculation method signature and an XML documentation comment. A specific starting point gives you something concrete to evaluate rather than asking a completion to infer the whole design.
Review and accept deliberately
In Visual Studio, GitHub documents pressing Tab to accept an inline suggestion. Copilot may also offer multiple suggestions that you can select or reject. Acceptance inserts text into your code; it does not establish that the implementation is correct. Read the result before keeping it.

Use chat for bounded questions and changes
GitHub’s IDE quickstart describes using Copilot to explain concepts, answer questions about code, propose edits, complete code, and validate files in IDEs with agent mode. Include the relevant file or selected code, then ask a narrow question—for example, ask what a method does or request validation for a named input. A focused request makes it easier to judge whether the response addresses the intended behavior.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ask for alternatives when tradeoffs matter
When there is more than one plausible implementation, request alternatives and compare them against your project’s behavior, readability, .NET target, and testability. This is a review technique, not a documented guarantee that Copilot’s options will be exhaustive or appropriate.
Set recurring project context
GitHub’s IDE customization overview points to custom instructions, settings, and MCP servers as ways to tailor Copilot to a workflow or codebase. Keep project rules specific, and verify how your chosen editor applies them.
What Copilot agent mode can do—and what stays under your control
In IDE agent mode, you describe a task and Copilot can determine which files to change, edit multiple files, offer or run terminal commands, and iterate toward a result. GitHub describes it for complex, multi-step tasks and work that needs iteration or external tools. The agent-mode guide documents this Visual Studio flow for version 17.14 and later: open GitHub Copilot Chat, select Agent, submit a task, then review streamed edits and confirm proposed commands when prompted.
Rank #4
Keep the task small enough to verify
Useful C# tasks have observable acceptance criteria. You might ask the agent to explain a class, add validation to a particular method, draft unit tests for a named behavior, or investigate a build error. Ask it to state assumptions, make the smallest relevant changes, and report the files changed and commands used. Those constraints help you inspect the result; they do not guarantee it will satisfy the task.
Inspect edits and commands
GitHub says you can steer agent mode with follow-up prompts and confirm or reject proposed commands, unless editor or administrator settings allow commands to run automatically. Review the diff, understand commands before allowing them to run, then build and test the project and check the behavior yourself. An organization administrator can disable agent mode, which may explain why the Agent option is missing.

Check support for your IDE and version
GitHub’s feature matrix currently marks agent mode as supported in Visual Studio and VS Code in its IDE summary, and its VS Code latest-release table lists support across the recent versions shown there. The matrix is a public preview and subject to change, and its detailed tables are version-specific. Check it for your editor and version rather than treating this snapshot as a lasting compatibility promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tradeoffs to account for
- Correctness and maintainability: GitHub’s how-to documentation explains how to receive and accept suggestions; it does not establish that generated code is correct, secure, maintainable, or compatible with your project. Check logic, API use, error handling, dependencies, and tests.
- Different IDE capabilities: Setup, features, and controls vary across editors. Verify the current documentation for the IDE and version you use.
- Access and organizational policy: Availability can depend on the account plan and administrator settings. Confirm access for the feature and account you intend to use.
- Agent credits: GitHub says each prompt in IDE agent mode consumes GitHub AI Credits. The agent-mode guide does not establish a current credit price, plan allotment, or that the same rule applies identically across product surfaces. Check current plan documentation before estimating usage cost.
GitHub’s setup and feature documentation does not provide a named productivity or quality statistic for this workflow. Treat Copilot as an assistant to evaluate in your own project, not as a documented promise of faster or better results.
A practical way to evaluate an IDE workflow
When choosing where to use Copilot, compare the parts that affect your work rather than assuming one editor’s experience transfers to another:
