You can use Siri to open Gemini on an iPhone by asking Siri to run a shortcut by name. That gives you a voice-triggered route into Gemini, but it does not replace Siri as the iPhone’s system assistant: Gemini must open in its app, and iOS may require you to unlock the phone first.
What the Siri-to-Gemini workaround does
Gemini is available on iPhone through Google’s app, which supports text and voice chats, Gemini Live, and image or camera interactions. The practical bridge is Apple Shortcuts: if the Gemini app exposes a suitable shortcut on your device, Siri can run it when you say its name. Google’s instructions for using Gemini on iPhone describe the app’s voice features, but do not guarantee that the same shortcut action appears for every app version, account, or region. When invoked, the shortcut launches Gemini and hands the interaction to the app. The official guidance does not establish that Gemini can become the always-listening default assistant or control iOS system-wide like Siri.

Set up a voice shortcut to Gemini
- Install and open Gemini. Check that the app is available for your iPhone, account, language, and location. Google says some features work without signing in; additional features and saved activity require a Google Account.
- Look for a Gemini shortcut in Shortcuts. Open Apple’s Shortcuts app and check the available app shortcuts for Gemini. The exact action or label can vary, and the available official guidance does not promise one particular action for all users. If no suitable shortcut appears, this Siri handoff may not be available on your current combination of app version, account, and region.
- Give the shortcut a distinct name. Use a short phrase that is unlikely to be confused with another shortcut or request. Siri can run a shortcut from your collection by name.
- Ask Siri to run it. Say, for example, “Siri, [your shortcut name].” Siri should launch the shortcut and open Gemini if the action is available and configured correctly.
- Unlock the phone if asked. If the shortcut needs to open Gemini while the iPhone is locked, Apple says Siri may require you to unlock before continuing.

Use the Action button as an optional shortcut launcher
On iPhone models with an Action button, you can configure it to start an App Shortcut. That offers a one-press way to launch a supported Gemini shortcut; it is optional and not needed to ask Siri to run one. Apple describes the setup in its Action button guide.
What Gemini can do after it opens
Google documents text and voice conversations, Gemini Live, and image or camera interactions in its iPhone app. Google says the microphone can remain open for up to five minutes while Gemini listens to a voice prompt. Feature availability can vary by account and location, and some work or school accounts may not have every feature. Do not assume that every connected app available in Gemini on Android is available on iPhone. Google says connected-app availability depends on the Gemini app, device, country, and other factors; apps available only in the Android Gemini app do not appear on iOS. Gemini features can depend on your account, language, location, and device. Apple likewise says Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone, language, or region, and Siri features vary by language and country or region. Check Apple’s iOS 26 Apple Intelligence guide for the stated limits.

The comparison is also changing: on September 14, 2026, Apple announced that Siri AI was rolling out in beta with iOS 27 and other 2027 operating system releases. Apple describes follow-up conversations and access through “Hey Siri” or the side button. It says Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device and supported language, and is initially unavailable in the EU and China. These are rollout details announced on that date, not a guarantee of availability on every device or in every location; consult Apple’s announcement for the latest status.

What this setup does not change
- It does not make Gemini the iPhone’s system-wide default assistant.
- It does not establish that Gemini is always listening in the background.
- It does not guarantee that a Gemini shortcut will be offered to every iPhone user.
