AI is most useful for learning when it helps you practice thinking—not when it does the thinking in your place. Let it quiz you, offer a hint, or critique your explanation, then close the chat and try the idea on your own. A polished answer is evidence that a task got done; it is not, by itself, evidence that you learned.
Why finishing a task can feel like learning when it isn’t
Generative AI can make it easier to produce an answer, summary, or lesson plan. But task success and learning are different outcomes: the OECD warns that general-purpose AI may improve performance on a task without producing learning gains when it is used without pedagogical guidance. In education, the key question is whether the learner still does the mental work needed to understand and retain the material.
The OECD’s Digital Education Outlook 2026 puts the principle this way: “GenAI should be used selectively and purposefully for pedagogical reasons to enrich learning and not replace cognitive effort or weaken the human relationships at the heart of education.” That is a call for deliberate use, not a claim that AI inevitably harms cognition.
Use AI at the right stage of learning
A University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development report, published in October 2026, gathered input from 30 learning scientists and educational researchers about GenAI in K–20 U.S. education. The experts identified 65 learning processes and reached consensus on 42. Their framework distinguishes acquiring an idea, practicing it, and applying it. It identifies practice—between initial learning and later independent application—as a particularly promising place for AI support.

Each guide provides tailored prompts and educational activities, giving curious kids structured yet fun ways to discover their interests.
Turn that distinction into a simple routine. This three-step routine is a practical application of the report’s framework, not a protocol tested as a whole.
- Acquire: Read, listen to an explanation, or make an initial attempt before asking AI to solve the problem. Identify what you do and do not understand.
- Practice: Ask AI to quiz you, give a hint, explain a gap in your reasoning, or create a fresh practice question. Attempt the work before looking at a full solution.
- Apply: Close the chat. Explain the idea from memory or use it on a new problem without AI assistance. This checks whether you can retrieve and transfer what you practiced.
The University of Minnesota report is an expert consensus exercise, not a randomized trial showing that this exact routine works for everyone. Its authors also caution that much educational research has limitations such as small samples, short timeframes, or weak comparisons.

Choose a learning workflow, not just a prompt
The same AI system can either support practice or bypass it. The difference is often who makes the first attempt, how structured the help is, and whether you check what you receive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Learning use | Who thinks first? | What AI does | What you do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unstructured completion | AI | Produces a finished answer or solution | Check the result, then try to explain or apply the idea independently |
| Hint-led practice | You | Offers a hint or points to a gap in your reasoning | Continue solving before requesting another hint |
| Retrieval practice | You, by recalling what you studied | Asks questions or generates a fresh practice problem | Answer without help, then review what you missed |
| Feedback on an attempt | You | Explains why an answer may be incomplete against a criterion you provide | Revise the answer and verify important factual claims |
The table is a practical comparison, not a validated scoring system. For a learning goal, favor a workflow that makes you retrieve, reason, or revise before AI supplies a finished response.

Prompts that keep you doing the learning
Use prompts that request a learning action rather than a completed assignment. For example:
- “Quiz me on the material I’ve just studied. Ask one question at a time, and wait for my answer before giving feedback.”
- “Here is my attempt. Give me one hint about the biggest gap in my reasoning, but don’t solve it for me.”
- “Explain why my answer is incomplete, and point to the step I should revisit.”
- “Give me a new practice problem on the same idea, but change the context. Don’t show the solution until I try.”
- “List any uncertainty in your explanation and identify sources I can check.”
These are examples of how to apply guided practice and feedback, not prompts that have each been experimentally validated. AI can be wrong or incomplete, so check consequential factual claims against reliable sources and use the criteria of your course or task. Microsoft Research’s survey describes workers verifying outputs against external sources as part of their reported critical-thinking work.

Make independent performance the final check
After using AI, put it away and test yourself. Can you explain the idea in your own words? Can you solve a changed version of the problem? Can you identify why a plausible but incorrect answer fails? If not, return to the part you could not explain and practice it again.
This is a useful self-check, not a formal diagnostic test. The OECD describes cases in which performance advantages with AI disappear or reverse when access is removed, including exams without AI. Independent performance therefore matters when the goal is durable understanding, even if AI-assisted work looked strong.

What current evidence does—and doesn’t—say
The available evidence supports a conditional conclusion: purposeful, guided AI use can support learning, while delegating work can improve the immediate result without necessarily building lasting understanding. It does not establish that AI makes everyone lazy or causes permanent cognitive damage.
For context, the OECD’s 2026 outlook reports that, in TALIS 2024, 37% of lower secondary teachers used AI for their job, and 57% agreed that AI helps write or improve lesson plans. In the same survey context, 72% believed AI can harm academic integrity by letting students pass off work as their own. That last number is a reported teacher belief, not a measured rate of misconduct.
A separate Microsoft Research paper presented at ACM CHI 2025 surveyed 319 knowledge workers who used GenAI at least weekly and analyzed 936 examples of workplace use they supplied. Participants reported critical-thinking effort in activities such as verifying and integrating AI output and overseeing tasks. Greater confidence in AI’s capability was related to less reported critical-thinking effort. This self-reported workplace survey does not prove that AI causes long-term skill loss, and it should not be generalized directly to every learner.
Whether you are studying for a course or building a skill, judge AI by what you can do after the assistance is gone. Use it to make practice more targeted, then make sure the final explanation or application is yours.
