USB4 Version 2.0 is a USB-IF specification revision that raises the USB4 link’s headline maximum to 80 Gbps. It also defines an optional asymmetric mode of up to 120 Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps in the other, aimed at bandwidth-heavy uses such as high-performance displays. These are link capabilities, not guaranteed file-transfer speeds, and they require compatible equipment across the connection.
What is USB4 Version 2.0?
USB4 Version 2.0 is a revision of the USB4 architecture published by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). Its central change is a new physical-layer architecture using PAM3 signal encoding, enabling operation at up to 80 Gbps. The revision also updates data tunneling and aligns USB4 with DisplayPort 2.1 and PCI Express 4. USB-IF announced the specification on October 18, 2022.
USB4’s distinguishing architectural feature is multi-protocol tunneling: the high-speed link can carry data and display protocols, with bandwidth dynamically shared among them. USB-IF says Enhanced SuperSpeed USB data tunneling can exceed 20 Gbps in Version 2.0. That figure describes tunneled USB data capability, not a promise that a drive or other application will sustain that transfer rate. USB-IF’s USB4 overview describes the architecture and supported protocols.

The specification describes two relevant maximum link configurations. The 80 Gbps mode is the headline high-speed mode; the 120/40 Gbps mode is optional and asymmetric. Neither figure should be read as a measured file-copy speed.

| Configuration | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 80 Gbps | Symmetric headline maximum link rate | USB-IF specification capability announced in 2022; not guaranteed application throughput. |
| Up to 120 Gbps one way and 40 Gbps the other | Optional asymmetric link mode for certain bandwidth-heavy applications, including high-performance displays | USB-IF specification capability announced in 2022; not 120 Gbps in both directions. |
| More than 20 Gbps | Enhanced SuperSpeed USB data tunneling | USB-IF’s 2022 specification announcement; not a general file-transfer benchmark. |
The asymmetry matters: a display-oriented workload may benefit from more bandwidth in one direction, but the mode does not make every connection a 120 Gbps link. Actual results depend on the workload and the supported capabilities of the connected system.
Is USB4 Version 2.0 the same as USB-C?
No. USB Type-C (often called USB-C) names a connector and cable form factor. USB4 is a data and signaling specification. USB-IF explicitly cautions that USB Type-C is not synonymous with USB4, USB 3.2, or USB Power Delivery; manufacturers can implement different capabilities in products that use the same connector. USB-IF’s Type-C language guidelines explain the distinction.

As a result, a USB-C-shaped port alone does not tell you its maximum data rate, display support, or power features. Check the product’s stated USB data rate and display capabilities rather than inferring them from the connector.
Will my USB-C cable support USB4 80Gbps?
Not necessarily. The host, device, and cable all need to support the capability you want. USB-IF says a USB 2.0 Type-C cable cannot carry USB4 signals; with that cable, even a compatible USB4 host and device operate at the slower USB 2.0 speed.

USB-IF’s 2022 announcement describes USB4 Version 2.0 operation over existing 40Gbps passive Type-C cables and newly defined 80Gbps active cables. Its current overview also describes two-lane operation using existing Type-C cables and up to 80 Gbps operation over 80Gbps certified cables. Because cable behavior depends on its rating and the connected system, verify explicit data-rate and certification details for the specific cable, host, and device rather than relying on the connector alone. USB-IF’s overview and its 2022 specification announcement describe these cable contexts.
How does USB4 Version 2.0 handle older USB devices?
USB4 is designed for backward compatibility, and USB-IF lists compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices. A connection negotiates to the best capability shared by the connected host and device; it does not automatically run at the newest specification’s maximum. The cable can also limit the connection, as with a USB 2.0 Type-C cable.

When troubleshooting a slower-than-expected connection, check each part of the chain separately:
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the host port advertises the desired USB data rate and display support.
- Confirm the device supports the same capability.
- Check the cable’s explicit data-rate rating and whether it is suitable for the target configuration.
- Consider whether other tunneled data or display traffic is sharing the link.
What should you look for when buying or connecting USB4 equipment?
Compare stated capabilities, not just product labels or connector shape. For an 80 Gbps connection, look for explicit support for that data rate from the host and device, plus a cable explicitly rated or certified for the target rate. If your use involves displays, check the device’s display support and the workload you need; the optional 120/40 Gbps mode is for certain use cases and should not be assumed from an 80 Gbps label.
