No—USB headphones are not automatically better than 3.5 mm headphones. The connector determines how audio reaches the headphones, not how good they sound. The result depends on the headphone design, the device’s audio circuitry or adapter, software support, and the features you need.

What changes between USB and 3.5 mm?

A USB audio connection carries audio digitally between the device and the headphones. The signal must be converted to analog before the headphone drivers can reproduce it, so conversion happens somewhere in the USB audio path. The USB-IF’s USB Audio Devices Release 4.0 specification, dated October 31, 2025, covers both analog and digital audio data as well as functions such as gain and tone control.

A conventional 3.5 mm headphone connection carries analog audio from the source’s audio circuitry—or from an adapter—to the headphones. The conversion and amplification are handled by that source or adapter. The difference is where the audio path is handled; it does not, by itself, prove that one connection sounds better.

Does USB sound better than a headphone jack?

Not as a general rule. The official specifications and support documents relevant here explain audio paths, device support, and particular hardware capabilities; they do not establish a universal sound-quality winner through a controlled listening comparison. A well-implemented USB headset may sound better than a poorly matched analog setup, and the reverse can also be true. Connector type alone is not enough to predict the result.

For 3.5 mm headphones, the source’s output matters. For USB headphones, the device and headset’s USB audio implementation matter. The headphone’s own acoustic design and tuning also affect what you hear. If sound quality is the priority, compare the specific headphones and the specific device or adapter you intend to use rather than choosing by connector alone.

How to choose for your device and needs

Decision USB headphones 3.5 mm headphones
Connection Need a supported USB audio connection and a matching, available port. Check the specific device and headset. Connect directly when the device has a standard headphone jack; otherwise, use a suitable adapter.
Audio path Audio travels digitally over USB; the device and headphone implementation still affect the outcome. The headphones receive analog output from the source or adapter. Output capability varies by device.
Microphone and controls Check that the particular headset’s microphone and controls work with your device and operating system. Class-driver support alone does not guarantee every feature. Check the plug wiring, jack support, and adapter. Microphone and inline-control compatibility is not universal.
Power Power behavior depends on the model. Some USB-connected headphones may draw power from the connection; others have different power arrangements. A passive analog connection does not itself supply power for active headphone features. Requirements depend on the model.
Convenience Useful when a device supports USB audio but has no headphone jack, provided the port and headset are compatible. Simple when the device has a standard jack. A USB-C device without one needs an adapter.

Choose USB when the port and features fit

USB headphones can be a practical choice when your computer or other device supports USB audio and you want a wired USB connection or a headset microphone. On Windows, Microsoft documents a class driver for compliant USB audio devices and says they do not require a proprietary adapter driver. That is Windows platform guidance, not a guarantee that every headset feature works on every operating system. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact model.

Choose 3.5 mm when you have a jack or want an adapter option

A 3.5 mm headset is the straightforward option when your device has a standard headphone jack. If it has USB-C but no headphone jack, a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter can connect existing analog headphones. Apple documents this adapter path for compatible devices. Confirm that the specific adapter and device support any microphone or inline controls you rely on; an audio connection does not guarantee those features.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Why a headphone jack can still be capable

A 3.5 mm jack is not inherently low quality. Apple’s guidance for specified compatible Mac models describes headphone jacks with a DAC, impedance detection, and adaptive output. Apple says those listed Macs can provide up to 1.25 volts RMS for headphones below 150 ohms, and 3 volts RMS for headphones from 150 ohms to 1 kilohm. These figures apply to the compatible Mac models Apple identifies; they are not representative of every computer or a direct comparison with USB headphones.

Headphone impedance and the source’s output capability can affect how well a particular pair is driven. The figures above are useful only for the documented Mac models and headphone-impedance ranges, not as a universal rule for choosing a connector.

Power can depend on the headphone model

Some headphones offer more than one wired connection, with different power behavior on each. Apple documents Beats Studio Pro as supporting both USB-C and 3.5 mm listening: USB-C listening charges the headphones, while 3.5 mm playback does not require battery power. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for all USB or analog headphones. Active features and power requirements vary, so check the product documentation for the headphones you own or plan to buy.

Quick decision checklist

  • Your device has a headphone jack: 3.5 mm is the direct connection; USB remains an option if your device supports the headset.
  • Your device has USB-C but no jack: use compatible USB headphones, or connect 3.5 mm headphones through a suitable USB-C adapter.
  • You need a microphone or inline controls: verify support for the exact headset, device, and—if used—adapter.
  • You want the best sound: compare the specific headphones and source or adapter. The connector alone does not settle sound quality.
  • You need to avoid battery dependence: check the model’s documented power behavior; connection type alone is not sufficient to determine it.
