USB and 3.5 mm describe how a gaming headset connects, not which one automatically sounds better. A 3.5 mm headset normally sends analog audio to the device’s headphone hardware and receives microphone audio through the device’s input circuitry. A USB headset normally appears as a separate digital audio device and may contain its own converters, microphone processing, controls, and software features. The better choice depends on the ports and platforms you use, the features you need, and the exact headset model.
What the two connections actually do
3.5 mm: the connected device handles the audio hardware
A typical 3.5 mm headset carries analog audio. The computer, console controller, phone, or other host converts digital game audio into an analog signal before sending it to the headset. Microphone input travels back through the host’s analog input circuit. This means the host device’s sound hardware, jack quality, input settings, and electrical design can affect the result.
Many modern headsets use one four-pole plug, called TRRS, for stereo headphones and a microphone on a single jack. Desktop PCs often use separate headphone-out and microphone-in sockets instead. A headset with one TRRS plug may therefore need a TRRS-to-dual-3.5 mm splitter on a desktop with separate ports. A headset supplied with two separate plugs needs the opposite arrangement: one for headphones and one for the microphone.
USB: the headset appears as a digital audio device
A USB headset usually contains the audio conversion hardware needed to turn the computer’s digital audio into an analog signal for its speakers. Its USB electronics may also handle microphone conversion, equalization, sidetone, virtual-surround processing, buttons, lighting, and other controls. On a computer, the headset commonly appears as separate playback and recording devices that you select in the operating system and in individual games or chat applications.

USB can be convenient when a computer has no usable analog jack or when you want the same headset-side audio processing on several computers. It does not eliminate setup: the correct USB playback and microphone devices still have to be selected, and some features require the manufacturer’s software.
USB versus 3.5 mm at a glance
| Consideration | 3.5 mm analog | USB digital |
|---|---|---|
| Where conversion and processing occur | Primarily in the connected device’s audio hardware | Typically inside the headset or its USB electronics |
| Common plug arrangement | One four-pole TRRS plug, or separate headphone and microphone plugs | USB plug or USB adapter; exact connector varies by model |
| Computer setup | Uses the host’s headphone and microphone inputs | Appears as selectable playback and recording devices |
| Extra controls and effects | Depend on the headset’s inline controls and the host; software support may be limited | May include headset-side controls, microphone processing, surround options, lighting, and configuration software |
| Port requirement | Combined headset jack or compatible separate ports | Available USB audio port and platform support for that model |
| Sound-quality conclusion | Cannot be ranked universally from the connector alone | Cannot be ranked universally from the connector alone |
| Latency conclusion | No universal advantage established | No universal advantage established |
The table describes common arrangements, not guarantees. A particular headset can include an analog cable, a USB control box, a USB wireless adapter, or proprietary limitations that change how it behaves.
Does USB sound better than 3.5 mm?
Not by definition. With 3.5 mm, the host’s digital-to-analog converter, amplifier, noise level, and microphone input matter. With USB, the headset’s built-in audio implementation matters. A well-designed analog headset connected to a clean output can outperform a poorly implemented USB headset, while a good USB headset can avoid a noisy or weak computer jack. The connector is not a sound-quality rating.
The headset’s speaker tuning, seal, microphone capsule, comfort, and the quality of its audio electronics are more useful comparison points. The available documentation does not establish a controlled, universal USB-versus-3.5 mm winner for sound quality or microphone quality.

Is one connection lower-latency?
Both are wired signal paths with generally predictable timing, but the cited documentation does not provide a controlled USB-versus-3.5 mm latency comparison. USB audio processing, operating-system buffering, game settings, and the host’s analog path can all affect timing. Do not choose a connector solely on an assumed latency advantage.
Features can change when you change the connection
SteelSeries Arctis 5 example
SteelSeries documents the Arctis 5 as a model where connection mode changes the feature set. Over USB on PC, Mac, or PlayStation, it supports ChatMix, surround sound, RGB illumination, and full software support. In 3.5 mm analog mode it functions as a standard analog headset, but ChatMix, surround sound, and RGB illumination are unavailable. SteelSeries summarizes the choice as using USB for full features and software support, and 3.5 mm for devices that do not support USB audio. Those statements apply to the Arctis 5, not to every headset.
Logitech G933 example
The G933 documentation describes use through a USB wireless adapter or a 3.5 mm cable, with some functions unavailable without the USB adapter. On some PCs, using the microphone through a 3.5 mm connection requires a four-pole-to-microphone/stereo splitter. Console support also varies by the connection and operating mode. This is why a product page’s general “USB and 3.5 mm” wording is not enough; check the model’s connection table.

Software configuration tools generally see a USB audio device, while a simple analog headset is presented through the computer’s existing sound hardware. SteelSeries’ documentation about Engine and analog devices illustrates this distinction: analog operation may provide audio, but software-level controls depend on what the host and the headset’s hardware expose.

Platform and port compatibility
Windows and macOS computers
For USB, connect the headset, then open the operating system’s sound settings and choose the headset for both output and microphone input. In a game or voice-chat app, check its own audio menu as well; applications can keep a different device selected from the system default.
For 3.5 mm, identify whether the computer has one combined headset socket or separate headphone and microphone sockets. A four-pole TRRS plug normally belongs in a combined jack. If the desktop has separate ports, use the headset’s splitter or a compatible TRRS splitter. If the microphone is silent, verify that the plug is fully inserted and that the correct input is selected.
PlayStation
Compatibility is model-specific. The Arctis 5, for example, exposes its documented surround, ChatMix, RGB, and software features over USB on PlayStation, while its analog mode has the reduced feature set described above. A headset can physically fit a PlayStation and still lose controls or effects when connected by a different method.

Microsoft documents the Xbox Stereo Headset connecting directly to an Xbox Wireless Controller through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack. On compatible Xbox consoles, it supports Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X spatial sound. This demonstrates that spatial audio is not inherently a USB-only feature: the console, operating system, software license or mode, and headset implementation all matter.

Nintendo Switch
In Corsair’s compatibility chart, updated September 24, 2025, the Nintendo Switch’s 3.5 mm port is identified as not supporting a microphone. A headset may therefore provide game audio while its microphone remains unavailable through that port. Confirm the exact console mode and the manufacturer’s chart before relying on voice chat.
Mobile devices and controllers
Phones, tablets, and controllers commonly provide one combined 3.5 mm jack, while USB support depends on the device’s port, operating system, adapter, and power behavior. A headset designed for a combined TRRS jack is the straightforward analog option. USB requires the device to support USB audio and may need a compatible adapter; the headset’s controls may still be limited even when audio works.
A compatibility check before you buy
- List every target device. Write down the exact PC, console, controller, phone, or tablet you will use. Compatibility can differ between a console’s front port, a controller jack, and a computer port.
- Identify the available ports. Look for a USB audio port, one combined 3.5 mm headset jack, or separate headphone and microphone sockets.
- Match the plug format. Confirm whether the headset has one four-pole TRRS plug, two 3.5 mm plugs, a USB plug, or a USB adapter. Plan for a splitter only when the headset and host use different arrangements.
- Read the exact model’s platform chart. Check entries for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and mobile devices. Note whether the chart limits microphone use, surround sound, ChatMix, lighting, buttons, or software by connection mode.
- Check software requirements. If equalization, virtual surround, firmware updates, or microphone controls are important, confirm that the manufacturer’s software supports your operating system and the connection you plan to use.
- Confirm input and output selection. After connecting a USB headset, select it as both playback and recording device in system settings and in each game or chat application. For analog, select the host’s correct headphone output and microphone input.
- Test before the return period ends. Play audio, record a microphone sample, test the mute control, and verify every feature you expected on each target platform.
Choosing between USB and 3.5 mm
Choose 3.5 mm when compatibility and simplicity come first
- Your main device has a reliable combined headset jack or the correct separate ports.
- You need to connect directly to a controller, phone, tablet, or another device that does not support USB audio.
- You want a headset that can be moved among analog devices without installing software.
- You are willing to let the host handle conversion and microphone processing.
Choose USB when the model’s digital features matter
- You need headset-side processing, configurable equalization, virtual-surround options, ChatMix, lighting, or detailed microphone controls supported over USB.
- Your computer’s analog output or microphone input is noisy, weak, or physically unavailable.
- You mainly use a computer or console with a supported USB audio path and want the same device to appear consistently in system settings.
- You have verified that the USB mode supports the platform and features you actually use.
Choose a headset offering both when your devices differ
A dual-connection headset can cover a USB-equipped computer and an analog controller or mobile device. Treat the two modes as separate configurations: the analog cable may disable software effects, lighting, mixing controls, or microphone functions. A “USB and 3.5 mm” specification indicates connection options, not identical behavior in both modes.
Common problems and fixes
USB audio works, but the microphone does not
- Open the system sound settings and select the headset’s USB microphone as the input.
- Check the game or chat application’s input device separately.
- Confirm that a physical mute switch is off and that the application has microphone permission.
- Reconnect the headset directly to the device rather than through an incompatible hub or adapter.
3.5 mm sound works, but the microphone is silent
- Verify that the host has a combined headset jack if you are using one TRRS plug.
- On a desktop with separate sockets, connect the correct TRRS splitter and insert both plugs fully.
- Check that the operating system is using the intended microphone input and that its level is not muted.
- Confirm the platform’s compatibility chart; some ports, including the Nintendo Switch 3.5 mm port cited by Corsair, do not support microphones.
Surround sound, ChatMix, or lighting disappeared
First check whether you changed from USB to analog. The Arctis 5, for example, loses those documented features in analog mode. If the feature is supposed to work over USB, install or open the supported configuration software, select the headset, and verify that the game or console is using the correct output mode.

There is a hum, hiss, or low volume over analog
Because analog audio uses the host’s circuitry, try another compatible jack or device and check the host’s output level. If the noise follows one computer but not another, that points to a host-side audio issue rather than proof that every 3.5 mm headset is inferior. A compatible USB audio adapter can be an option when it addresses a specific host-jack problem, but it does not guarantee better sound from every headset.
What to compare in actual headset models
Once the connection is understood, compare the parts that determine your experience:
- Platform support: whether audio and microphone work on every target device.
- Port arrangement: combined TRRS jack, separate plugs, USB connector, wireless USB adapter, or a required splitter.
- Connection-specific features: ChatMix, surround processing, lighting, equalizer, firmware tools, mute controls, and sidetone.
- Audio implementation: the host’s analog hardware versus the headset’s USB conversion and processing.
- Actual performance: speaker tuning, microphone clarity, comfort, clamp force, cable length, and durability.
- Support documentation: the manufacturer’s current platform chart and instructions for the exact model, not just the brand family.
Do not use a connector as a substitute for listening tests or microphone tests. The available documentation establishes connection behavior and compatibility examples, but it does not supply a universal sound-quality score, microphone ranking, or latency measurement.

Bottom line for buyers
Use 3.5 mm when your devices provide the right analog jack and you value broad, software-free compatibility. Use USB when the headset’s digital controls or processing are important and the target platform supports them. If you move between a USB computer and an analog controller or mobile device, a headset with both connection options can be practical, provided you verify which features disappear in each mode. The safest purchase is based on the exact headset’s port format, platform chart, microphone behavior, and connection-specific feature list—not on the USB or 3.5 mm label alone.
