To use your phone’s cellular internet on a Windows PC over USB, connect the phone with a data-capable cable, then enable tethering on the phone. Android uses USB tethering in its Hotspot controls. On iPhone, turn on Personal Hotspot; Windows also needs Apple Devices or iTunes installed, and you may need to approve a Trust prompt.
Choose the right USB tethering setup
| Phone | Phone setting | Windows requirement | Possible prompt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | USB tethering in Hotspot controls | No general companion app requirement is stated in Google’s setup guidance. | Varies by phone and manufacturer. |
| iPhone | Personal Hotspot | Apple Devices or iTunes must be installed. | Tap Trust if the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer. |
USB tethering here means sharing the phone’s cellular connection to the PC. Windows Mobile hotspot does the opposite: it shares the PC’s existing internet connection outward over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Enable USB tethering from Android to Windows
- Confirm that mobile data is working and that your carrier plan permits tethering. Some carriers restrict tethering or charge extra.
- Connect the Android phone directly to the PC with a USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
- On the phone, open the Hotspot controls. On many Android phones, swipe down from the top of the screen, then touch and hold Hotspot.
- Turn on USB tethering. The exact menu name or location can vary by phone maker; if you cannot find it, search the phone’s Settings for “tethering” or consult its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Wait for Windows to recognize the network connection, then open a webpage on the PC to check that it works.
- When finished, turn USB tethering off. Google recommends turning tethering off when it is no longer needed; keeping the phone connected to the PC can help extend its battery life.
Set up iPhone USB tethering on Windows
- Check that the iPhone has cellular service and that your carrier plan allows Personal Hotspot.
- Install Apple Devices or iTunes on the Windows PC. Apple specifies that one of these must be installed to connect to Personal Hotspot over USB.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and follow the onscreen instructions to turn it on.
- Connect the iPhone to the PC with a cable that fits both devices and supports data.
- If the iPhone shows Trust This Computer?, tap Trust and enter the iPhone passcode if asked.
- Give Windows time to establish the connection, then check that the PC can access the internet.
Fix USB tethering when Windows does not connect
The phone has no USB tethering option, or the option will not turn on
- Verify that mobile data works on the phone and check whether your carrier plan allows tethering. Some operators block sharing or require an entitlement check; limits and extra charges can apply.
- For iPhone, make sure Personal Hotspot is available under Settings > Personal Hotspot and that the plan supports it.
Windows does not detect a wired connection
- Check that the cable fits the ports on both devices and supports data. A cable that only charges may not establish a network connection.
- Connect directly to a PC USB port instead of using a hub. If the connection still fails, try another compatible cable or port.
Windows reports a USB device problem
- Open Device Manager.
- Find the device marked with a warning icon, right-click it, and open Properties.
- Check the device status and note any error code. Use that code to identify relevant Windows troubleshooting steps; a general USB-C device check is not a guaranteed fix for every tethering or driver problem.
There is no single universal Android tethering driver package established for phones from different manufacturers, so avoid treating third-party driver updaters or manual driver installation as the default fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn iPhone is connected, but Windows has no internet connection
- Confirm that Apple Devices or iTunes is installed.
- If the iPhone displays the Trust prompt, approve it and enter the passcode if requested.
- If Windows still does not connect, check the cable and ports, then confirm Personal Hotspot and cellular service are available. These prerequisites do not guarantee that every Windows driver or connection issue is resolved.
The connection works but uses too much data or costs extra
Tethering uses the phone’s cellular connection. Check your carrier’s tethering terms and monitor data use, particularly if your plan has limits or charges for hotspot use.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle change does not mean USB tethering itself stopped working, but it does mean Windows 10 no longer receives standard support from Microsoft.
