A USB security key is a physical authenticator that connects to a compatible device and helps verify your identity when you sign in. It uses supported authentication protocols such as FIDO U2F or FIDO2; it is not a thumb drive that stores your password. The USB connector is only one part of the picture: the account, browser or platform, key, and required protocol must all be compatible.
What a USB security key does
A security key proves possession of a physical authenticator during sign-in. With FIDO U2F, a service registers a public key associated with its origin. Later, the key uses its corresponding private key to sign a response to the service’s authentication request, and the service verifies that response. The password is not sent as the cryptographic proof. FIDO Alliance’s U2F overview describes U2F as a way for online services to add a strong second factor to existing password sign-in.
Depending on the protocol and account’s sign-in flow, you may connect the key, touch its presence sensor, enter a PIN, or complete another user-verification step. A key can support more than one connection method, including USB, NFC, or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). FIDO Alliance’s specifications describe the protocols and transport options; W3C’s WebAuthn specification explains the web-facing API.
How U2F, FIDO2, WebAuthn, and CTAP differ
- FIDO U2F / CTAP1: A second-factor protocol designed to supplement password sign-in. FIDO now refers to U2F as CTAP1 in the FIDO2 specifications.
- FIDO2: A set of specifications combining W3C WebAuthn and FIDO Alliance CTAP. It supports a wider range of sign-in experiences than U2F alone.
- WebAuthn: The web API that browsers and websites use to request registration and authentication with public-key credentials. It can work with a device’s built-in authenticator or an external security key.
- CTAP2: The protocol family used for communication between a client and an external authenticator, including a key connected over USB, NFC, or BLE.
A passkey is not an exact synonym for every USB security key. FIDO2 can support passwordless, second-factor, and multi-factor sign-in, but a particular key’s capabilities and the service’s implementation determine which experience is available. FIDO Alliance’s specifications explain the distinction between these building blocks.

What determines whether a key will work
A matching plug is not enough. The account service must accept security keys and the protocol the key supports, the browser or platform must support the flow, and the device must provide a compatible connection. Requirements can differ between services and even between account types at the same provider.
For example, Microsoft says Microsoft Account sign-in requires features and extensions unique to FIDO2 CTAP2 authenticators and does not accept CTAP1 credentials. That is why a product description that says only “USB” or “FIDO” does not establish compatibility. See Microsoft’s security-key sign-in guidance for that account-specific requirement.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Before choosing or using a key, check:
- Whether the service accepts security keys and which protocol version it requires.
- Whether your computer or phone has the required USB-A or USB-C connector, or supports another transport such as NFC.
- Whether the sign-in method requires touching the key, setting or entering a PIN, or another verification step.
- What recovery options the account provider supports if the key is lost. Consider whether to register a spare key or another recovery method in line with that provider’s guidance.
As one product-form example, Google lists its Titan Security Key with FIDO2 and USB-A/USB-C and NFC options. Model variants and availability can change; its listing is not evidence that the key works with every account. Google Store’s Titan Security Key listing gives the current product details.

- Open the account’s security or sign-in settings and find the option to add a security key or security-key verification method.
- Start registration, then follow the service’s prompts to connect or tap the key and complete any requested touch or PIN step.
- Confirm that the service reports successful registration, then follow its instructions for using the key at future sign-ins.
The exact menu names and accepted key types vary by service, account type, and administrator policy. For work or school accounts, an organization may provide the required key; Microsoft’s setup guidance for work and school accounts covers that context.

USB key versus password stored on a drive
A USB security key is an authenticator, not a storage device containing a copy of your password. Its role is to perform a protocol-specific cryptographic sign-in step when requested by a compatible service. That distinction matters: plugging in an ordinary flash drive does not make it a FIDO security key, and a security key does not automatically work with every website or account.
