If a USB flash drive or external disk shows the wrong capacity, first check its total size and partition layout in Windows Disk Management. A smaller volume with unallocated space may be fixable on a known-empty drive; a disk marked RAW, Offline, Not Initialized, or No Media needs a different response. If you need files on the drive, do not format it, delete partitions, or initialize it while troubleshooting.

Check whether the capacity is missing from the volume or from the disk itself

File Explorer shows a mounted volume. Disk Management shows the physical disk and how its space is divided. Those views can point to different causes: a drive may have its expected physical capacity but only a small partition, or the physical disk itself may report little or no capacity.

  1. Open Start and search for Disk Management or Create and format hard disk partitions. Alternatively, press Windows+R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Microsoft says Disk Management works the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide
  2. In the lower graphical pane, find the external disk and compare its total capacity with the size of its individual partitions and volumes.
  3. Note the disk’s status and any unallocated area. Do not make changes yet if you need data from the drive.
What Disk Management shows What it may mean Safe next step
Expected total disk size, a small volume, and unallocated space The space may be outside the existing volume because of the partition layout. If the disk is known to be empty, create a volume using the unallocated space. If you need files from it, do not create a volume there.
A healthy volume with no drive letter The volume may exist but not appear in File Explorer. Assign a drive letter in Disk Management.
RAW Windows does not recognize a usable file system for the volume. Do not format it if you want to recover files. Consider recovery help instead.
Unallocated space No volume currently occupies that space; it may still contain recoverable data. Create a volume only if you are certain the space is empty.
Not Initialized Possible causes include a new disk, an invalid or missing disk signature, corrupted formatting, or a hardware problem. Initialize only a new or intentionally blank disk. Do not initialize a disk with data you need.
Offline The disk is not currently online in Windows. Bring it Online in Disk Management, then check the disk and volume layout again.
No Media, zero capacity, or a physically implausible capacity A partition change may not address the problem; the device or its connection may have failed. Check the connection and test on another computer. If the problem persists, seek manufacturer or specialist help.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance is on a Windows Server page, so its advice about basic states and physical connections is useful here; advanced instructions for other disk types may not apply to an ordinary USB drive. Microsoft: Troubleshoot Disk Management

Protect needed files before trying a repair

Before changing partitions or formatting, decide whether any files on the drive matter. Microsoft warns, “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” It also advises against formatting a RAW partition or creating a volume in unallocated space when the goal is to recover files.

  • If the drive contains important files, do not format, delete partitions, initialize the disk, or run a disk-cleaning command as an experiment.
  • If the disk is failing and the files are valuable, stop trying destructive fixes and consider a data recovery lab. No recovery outcome is guaranteed.
  • Proceed with repartitioning or formatting only when the drive is definitely empty or you have accepted the loss of its contents.

Restore a full-size volume on a known-empty drive

If Disk Management shows the expected physical disk size and unallocated space, you can use that space to make a larger volume. Microsoft documents this process in Disk Management; formatting is destructive, and a quick format does not fully overwrite the volume. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide

  1. In Disk Management, right-click the unallocated area on the correct disk and select New Simple Volume.
  2. Choose the maximum size if you want one volume to use all the available unallocated space. Choose a smaller size only if you intentionally want multiple volumes.
  3. Assign a drive letter in the wizard.
  4. Complete the wizard and format the volume only if you are certain the disk contains no data you need.

A missing drive letter is a separate issue: if the volume is healthy and has a file system, assigning a letter may make it visible without rebuilding the volume. Do not format a healthy volume just because it is absent from File Explorer.

Check the cable, port, and computer if the physical size looks wrong

A connection problem or device failure can look like a capacity problem. Microsoft recommends reconnecting the disk, restarting the computer and any powered external disk, trying a direct USB port instead of a hub, checking another cable, and testing the disk on another PC. 1. Unplug and reconnect the drive. If it has its own power supply, restart the drive as well as the computer.
  2. Connect it directly to a different USB port on the PC rather than through a hub.
  3. Try another compatible cable if the drive uses one.
  4. Connect it to another computer and check Disk Management there.

If the disk still fails on another computer, Microsoft says that is a good sign the disk itself has a problem rather than the original PC. A SanDisk support search-result summary associates a No Media state with failure of the flash storage inside a drive; because the support page redirected, treat that explanation as lower-confidence guidance, not a diagnosis. Know what a layout fix can—and cannot—do

Creating a volume can make existing unallocated space usable; assigning a letter can make an existing healthy volume appear in File Explorer. Neither operation adds physical storage. If the disk itself reports an implausibly small size, shows zero capacity, or remains unavailable across ports, cables, and computers, a partition change cannot establish that the device has its advertised capacity or repair failed hardware. The sources reviewed here do not establish a recommended fake-capacity test.

For a persistently faulty device, contact its manufacturer or seek specialist help, especially if it holds needed files. Replace it only after you have decided the data is not needed or recovery has been addressed.
