If a USB drive is not showing up, first check the connection, then find out whether your computer detects the device but fails to mount its volume. On Windows, check Device Manager and Disk Management; on a Mac, check Disk Utility with View > Show All Devices. Do not initialize, erase, or format a drive that may contain files you need.
Before troubleshooting, protect the files
If the drive contains important data, do not initialize it, create a new volume, erase it, or format it to make it appear. Microsoft warns that formatting a volume destroys its data. Apple recommends having a current backup before running repairs; erasing is a destructive option, not a way to recover files. If valuable files are inaccessible, consider professional data recovery before attempting destructive changes. Start with the connection
- Unplug the drive and reconnect it securely.
- Try another USB port on the computer.
- Connect the drive directly to the computer, bypassing any hub, dock, or adapter for this test.
- If the drive or hub requires external power, confirm that its power connection is in place. If you need a powered hub, connect it to its AC adapter.
- If possible, test the drive on another computer. Note whether the problem follows the drive or occurs only on one computer.
These checks help distinguish a cable, port, hub, or power issue from a device or volume problem. Apple recommends checking the external device’s cable, connections, and power when it is not recognized. Apple: If a USB device isn’t working with Mac

On Windows, check Device Manager and Disk Management
Look for a device error
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for the USB drive or an unknown device with a warning icon. Open its Properties and read Device status; record any error code.
- If Windows reports that the last USB device malfunctioned and was not recognized, use the error code to follow Microsoft’s applicable resolution. Avoid random third-party driver utilities; Microsoft directs users to the device vendor or Microsoft support for codes its guide does not cover.
Microsoft lists power, port, cable, hub, and device or driver issues among possible causes in applicable USB-C cases. Microsoft: Fix USB-C problems in Windows · Microsoft: Device Manager error codes in Windows

See whether Windows detects a disk or volume
- Right-click Start and choose Disk Management, or press Windows key + R, enter
diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. - Find the USB disk and inspect its status and volumes. A disk that appears here may be detected even if it has no drive letter or does not appear in File Explorer.
- If a volume appears intact but has no drive letter, investigate assigning one. Do not initialize an unfamiliar disk, or format a volume, simply to make it visible.
Initialization is intended for a new disk. Formatting an existing volume destroys its data, so stop if you need to preserve files and the disk’s state is unclear. Microsoft: Disk Management in Windows
On a Mac, inspect the device in Disk Utility
- Reconnect the drive, try another Mac port, and connect directly rather than through a hub. If a powered hub is necessary, make sure its AC adapter is connected.
- Open Disk Utility. If available, choose View > Show All Devices.
- Check whether the physical device, a container, or a volume appears. This distinction matters: the device can be present even when its volume is not mounted or available in Finder.
- If a device appears and you want to try repair, run First Aid through the device hierarchy as Apple documents. Have a current backup first. First Aid checks and repairs certain formatting and directory-structure errors, but it cannot detect or repair every disk problem.

If the drive remains absent from Disk Utility after checking its cable, connections, power, and direct connection, Apple says the Mac or storage device might need service. If you need the data, consider recovery options before erasing or further repair attempts.

When the drive appears but you still cannot use it
It is visible but read-only on a Mac
A drive that appears in Disk Utility or Finder but will not accept files is different from a drive the Mac cannot detect. One possible cause is its format: macOS may read NTFS drives, but Disk Utility does not support writing to NTFS. APFS and Mac OS Extended are Mac formats; MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT are Windows-compatible formats. Check the format before changing anything. Reformatting erases data, so back up or make a recovery decision first. Apple: If you can’t write to an external storage device

Windows sees the device but not a usable volume
Use Disk Management to establish whether the disk has a volume and whether that volume has a drive letter. A missing letter is a different problem from a disk that is absent, offline, or shown as unallocated. Do not treat an unfamiliar or unallocated disk as empty if it might contain needed files; do not initialize or format it as a diagnostic step.
What the computer’s view tells you
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Drive absent from the operating system’s disk utility | Try another port and a direct connection; check cable and power. If it remains absent, consider service. Prioritize recovery before destructive changes if files matter. |
| Device appears in Windows Device Manager, but not as a usable disk or volume | Read and record Device status and its error code, then consult Microsoft’s code-specific guidance. |
| Disk appears in Windows Disk Management, but the volume lacks a drive letter | Investigate assigning a letter, while preserving the existing volume and data. |
| Device appears in Mac Disk Utility, but its volume is missing or unavailable | Inspect the device hierarchy; consider First Aid only with a current backup and with the limits of repair in mind. |
| Drive appears but is read-only on a Mac | Check its file-system format and permissions rather than treating it as wholly undetected. |
| Drive works on another computer but not this one | Focus on the affected computer’s port, connection path, or device status; on Windows, check Device Manager for an error. |
When to stop troubleshooting
- Stop before initializing, erasing, or formatting if you need files on the drive.
- Consider professional data recovery first when the files are valuable and the drive is inaccessible.
- If the drive remains physically absent after direct-connection, port, cable, and power checks, repeated software fixes are unlikely to establish whether the hardware has failed; consider service.
Apple notes that if a storage device does not appear in Disk Utility’s sidebar, the Mac or device might need service. Apple Support
