No. USB-C is a connector type; MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) is an audio/video technology. MHL can operate through a USB-C port using MHL Alternate Mode, but only when the device supports it. A USB-C-shaped socket alone does not confirm video output or MHL compatibility.
What USB-C and MHL each describe
USB-C identifies the reversible physical connector used by a cable and port. MHL identifies a technology for carrying audio and video from a compatible source to a display. Because they describe different things, the terms are not interchangeable: MHL may use a USB-C connector, but USB-C does not automatically mean MHL.
MHL says its ecosystem includes more than 750 million devices; that is the consortium’s own undated claim, not an independently verified count of current devices. MHL’s USB Type-C information also distinguishes its mode from other USB-C video modes.

Does every USB-C port support video?
No. A USB-C port can support charging and data without supporting video output. The host device must implement a video mode, and the mode matters: USB-IF notes that USB-C serves as an external display connector on many host products, not that every USB-C port carries video. USB-IF’s USB4 overview provides that broader context.

Check the documentation for the exact phone, tablet, or computer model. Look for an explicit statement of video output and the supported method, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode or MHL Alternate Mode. USB data-speed labels and the port’s shape are not evidence of video support.
How to check whether your adapter will work
- Identify the source’s video mode. Check the exact device model’s manufacturer documentation for supported video output and its named mode.
- Match the adapter to that mode. An MHL Alt Mode adapter requires an MHL-capable source. A DisplayPort Alt Mode adapter requires a source that supports DisplayPort over USB-C. MHL states that adapters for these two modes are not interchangeable.
- Check the display connection. Confirm the adapter or dock provides an input the display accepts. MHL describes adapter or dock paths to HDMI, DVI, and VGA for compatible MHL sources.
- Confirm the display requirements. Check that the source, adapter, and display support the resolution and refresh rate you need.
For DisplayPort over USB-C, a compatible adapter can convert the signal to HDMI and other display interfaces, as described in DisplayPort’s USB-C overview. This does not make a DisplayPort adapter an MHL adapter.

USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or MHL adapter?
Choose by the source device’s documented video mode, not by the connector alone. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is appropriate only if it supports the video mode your source outputs and the display accepts HDMI. If the source supports MHL Alt Mode, use an adapter designed for that mode; if it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, use a compatible DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. A USB-C dock with HDMI has the same host-mode requirement.

The key distinction was made explicit in MHL, LLC’s November 17, 2014 announcement, which quoted USB-IF President and COO Jeff Ravencraft describing USB Type-C as a robust connector solution. That historical statement describes the connector, not universal video capability. MHL’s announcement.
