USB-C is the more versatile port on iPhone 15 and later; Lightning still works on earlier iPhones. But USB-C does not automatically mean faster charging or data transfer: your iPhone model, cable, adapter, and power source all matter.
Which iPhones use USB-C and which use Lightning?
Apple’s guidance assigns USB-C to iPhone 15 and later, while earlier iPhone models use Lightning. Check your exact iPhone model before buying a cable or adapter rather than relying on how a cable looks. Apple’s USB-C guide and its charging guidance cover the relevant model distinction.
What changes when you use USB-C?
Apple describes USB-C as a standard for charging, data syncing, and audio and video playback. On supported iPhones, the port can also connect to computers, external storage, displays, microphones, Ethernet adapters, and other accessories. Which features work depends on the iPhone and accessory; the connector shape alone does not guarantee compatibility. Apple’s iPhone USB-C support page lists examples and qualifications.

Charging depends on the whole setup
For faster wired charging, Apple recommends a compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter and USB-C cable for iPhone 15 and later. For iPhone 14 and earlier, its guidance specifies a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. A compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter rated at 20 W or higher can provide faster charging on iPhone, but that does not promise a particular charge time. Apple says the listed fast-charge group—iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and later—requires a minimum 20 W adapter. Actual performance may be reduced by a low-output charger, a shared multiport source, a computer, or a hub. Apple’s charging guidance explains the recommendations.

Data speed depends on the iPhone and cable
USB-C does not specify one data rate for every iPhone cable and setup. Apple says the USB-C cable included with iPhone supports charging and USB 2 speeds. Specified Pro models support up to 10 Gbit/s when paired with an optional USB 3 cable. That upper figure is not a claim about every USB-C iPhone or cable. Apple’s USB-C guide identifies the applicable models and cable requirement.

For wired CarPlay, Apple says its USB-C-to-Lightning adapter may work in most vehicles, but some combinations of adapter, cable, and vehicle can disrupt the connection. Check Apple’s adapter notes if you plan to use it in a car.

Which port is the better fit?
- Choose USB-C for versatility if you have an iPhone 15 or later and want access to Apple-documented connections for storage, displays, and other accessories. Confirm model-specific feature support and use a cable suited to the task.
- Keep using Lightning if your iPhone has a Lightning port. To connect it to a USB-C charger or computer, use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable; to use a Lightning accessory with a USB-C iPhone, use the appropriate adapter.
- For charging speed, choose by model and setup, not connector name alone. Follow Apple’s cable and adapter guidance for your iPhone, and avoid assuming a particular charge time.
