HDMI is usually the simplest choice when your computer and screen both have HDMI ports. USB-C can also carry video, but only if the source device’s particular USB-C port supports video output and the cable or adapter supports the display mode you need. USB-C and HDMI are not interchangeable names for the same kind of port: USB-C is a connector that can carry different signals, while HDMI is a digital audio/video interface.

What is the difference between USB-C and HDMI?

USB-C describes a reversible connector and cable ecosystem. Depending on the devices and cable, it can carry USB data, power, and video. The connector’s shape alone does not tell you which capabilities are present.

HDMI is a digital audio/video interface used to connect sources such as computers and media devices to televisions, monitors, and projectors. In everyday conversation, “HDMI” may refer to the interface, its familiar full-size connector, or an HDMI cable; the important point is that a compatible HDMI port is intended to carry audio and video.

For a direct connection, use HDMI when both devices have suitable HDMI ports. Choose USB-C when the devices support the required video connection and you value a compact port that may also handle data or charging.

Does every USB-C port support video?

No. A USB-C-shaped port does not guarantee video output. Check the exact laptop, tablet, phone, dock, or other source device’s specifications and support documentation for video output over USB-C. DisplayPort’s FAQ addresses how to determine whether a device supports DisplayPort over USB-C; Microsoft also explains USB-C Alternate Mode and unsupported connections in its Windows guidance.

How does USB-C carry video?

DisplayPort Alternate Mode

A common way to carry video over USB-C is DisplayPort Alternate Mode. It repurposes some USB-C connector pins and cable wires to carry DisplayPort signals. A compatible adapter or adapter cable can then connect that output to a monitor or TV input such as HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA, as described in the DisplayPort FAQ.

A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter used with a source that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode converts the DisplayPort video output to HDMI. It is not evidence that the source has an HDMI signal on every USB-C port.

HDMI Alt Mode

HDMI Alt Mode is a separate implementation that carries HDMI signals over a USB-C connector. HDMI Licensing Administrator says its HDMI Alt Mode specification supports HDMI 1.4b on its official overview. Do not confuse this with the common USB-C-to-HDMI adapter path that converts DisplayPort Alternate Mode output.

Which should you use for your setup?

Setup What to use What to check
HDMI port on the source and HDMI input on the display A suitable HDMI cable Confirm the devices and cable support your target resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio needs.
USB-C source and HDMI display A compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or adapter cable Confirm the source USB-C port supports video; check adapter compatibility and its rated display modes.
One-cable desk setup A compatible USB-C display or dock Check the host, display or dock, and cable for the video mode, USB data, and charging power you need.

For DisplayPort-over-USB-C connections to a DisplayPort monitor, DisplayPort recommends an adapter cable over a USB-C-to-DisplayPort receptacle adapter, warning that the latter may cause poor picture quality or intermittent or absent display in that specific use case. See the DisplayPort FAQ. That recommendation is specific to the DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort connection described there, not a blanket rule for every USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.

Will USB-C or HDMI give you a better picture?

Neither connector name guarantees a better picture or a universal resolution and refresh-rate advantage. The source, display, cable, and every adapter or dock in between must all support the mode you want. Check resolution and refresh rate as well as HDR and audio support in the specifications for the complete connection.

  • EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.

DisplayPort’s USB-C overview gives examples of DisplayPort-over-USB-C configurations reaching up to 8K at 60 Hz and power delivery up to 100 watts. These are capability examples, not promises for every USB-C port, cable, adapter, or display.

HDMI Licensing Administrator’s specification overview lists HDMI 2.2 capabilities including 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 240 Hz. Those figures describe a different specification context; they are not a head-to-head test against the DisplayPort examples. For cable selection, HDMI’s Premium Cable Certification Program covers use cases such as 4K at 60 Hz and HDR.

What to check before buying a cable or adapter

  • Source video support: Verify that the exact USB-C port on the computer, tablet, or phone outputs video, and identify the mode it uses.
  • Display input: Confirm the monitor or TV has the input you plan to use and that you can select it.
  • Adapter direction and compatibility: Choose an adapter designed for the source’s video mode and the display’s input; a cable that fits physically may not support the needed signal path.
  • Display rating: Match the adapter and cable to the required resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio features.
  • Other functions: If one USB-C connection must also charge a laptop or carry USB data, confirm that the host, dock or display, and cable support those functions together.

USB-IF’s cable certification information covers cable assemblies defined in USB 2.0, USB 3.2, and USB Type-C specifications. Certification or a listed capability can help identify a cable category, but it does not establish that a particular source port outputs video.

Why is there no picture over USB-C?

  1. Check source capability. Look up video output support for the exact USB-C port, not just the device’s connector shape.
  2. Check the signal path. Confirm that the adapter accepts the source’s video mode and converts to the display input you are using; verify the adapter’s direction and rated display mode.
  3. Select the display input. Use the monitor or TV’s input control to choose the connected port.
  4. Isolate the cable or adapter. If possible, test with a known-compatible connection and inspect the documentation for each component.
  5. Check for an unsupported Alternate Mode. Microsoft notes that Windows may expose a Billboard device with information about an unsupported Alternate Mode connection. Consult its USB-C display guidance.

Does USB-C replace HDMI?

No. USB-C can simplify a setup by combining video, data, and charging through a compatible port, dock, or display. HDMI remains a straightforward option when both devices have suitable HDMI connections. The practical choice comes down to the ports and supported modes on the particular devices—not which connector looks newer.
