Marks beside a USB-C port can hint at data speed, video output, Thunderbolt, or charging—but USB-C itself names only the connector, not a guaranteed set of features. There is no universal seven-symbol legend. Use a marking as a clue, then confirm what your exact device supports in its manual or specifications.

Why USB-C symbols need a closer look

A USB-C port may handle data, charging, video through an alternate mode, or Thunderbolt, depending on how the manufacturer designed that device. The connector’s shape alone does not tell you which functions are available. Microsoft explains that USB Type-C can carry non-USB protocols through alternate modes while retaining USB 2.0 and charging functionality: Microsoft’s USB Type-C system guidance.

The marks below are common examples, not a standardized set of seven. Manufacturers may use symbols differently, and a port without a marking can still have features documented in its specifications.

Seven markings you might see by a USB-C port

1. DisplayPort or “DP” logo

A DisplayPort logo is a useful clue that the USB-C port can send video using DisplayPort over USB-C. VESA says ports supporting DisplayPort over USB-C will normally carry the DisplayPort logo, but check the model documentation rather than treating the symbol as a guarantee: VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C FAQ.

2. Lightning-bolt symbol

A lightning bolt may identify Thunderbolt, but do not assume every bolt means Thunderbolt. MSI’s 2022 guide associates its lightning-bolt identifier with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 on the products it covers. Other manufacturers may use bolt-like marks for charging or other purposes, so verify the exact model: MSI’s USB-C port identification guide.

3. “SS” or SuperSpeed mark with a number

In MSI’s examples, “SS” markings distinguish USB-C data-rate types, including theoretical rates of 5, 10, and 20 Gb/s. Those figures describe interface rates, not guaranteed file-copy speeds. They also do not establish whether the port supports video; MSI distinguishes data capability from DisplayPort support in its examples. Marking conventions are not necessarily identical across manufacturers. MSI’s guide

  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

4. Charging, plug, or battery symbol

A plug or battery mark can be a model-specific hint that a port is intended for charging or power. It does not state a universal wattage. Actual charging depends on the port, device, charger, and cable; Microsoft says faster charging requires the charger and cable to support the power levels the computer or phone needs: Microsoft’s USB-C and fast-charging guidance.

Microsoft’s OEM guidance describes USB Type-C as supporting faster charging “up to 100 watts with power delivery (PD).” That is a stated capability, not a rating for every USB-C port or a promise about what a particular device will accept: Microsoft’s USB Type-C system guidance.

5. USB trident or USB label

The USB trident or a USB label indicates USB functionality, but on its own it does not prove that the port supports video output or Thunderbolt. USB-C ports can have different data rates and optional alternate modes, so consult the specifications for the particular device. Microsoft’s USB Type-C FAQ

6. A symbol paired with a number or another mark

Combinations can communicate more than one capability, but there is no cross-manufacturer rule that lets you decode every combination from appearance alone. For example, MSI’s guide separates data-rate examples from whether DisplayPort video is supported. Look up the full port description rather than inferring video or charging from a number alone. 7. No visible symbol

The absence of a mark does not prove the port lacks video, charging, or a particular data capability. Features may be listed only in the device manual or specifications. Microsoft describes USB-C functionality as depending on the implementation in the host and connected system: Microsoft’s USB Type-C OEM guidance and Microsoft’s USB Type-C FAQ.

How to check whether your USB-C port supports a monitor

  1. Identify the exact device model. Use the model number from the device label, system information, or its original product paperwork; similar product names can have different port configurations.
  2. Find the port description in the manufacturer’s manual or specifications. Look for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” Thunderbolt, or a documented USB4 display feature. An HP manual, for example, may describe a particular USB-C port as supporting power, data, and DisplayPort output; that applies to the configurations covered by that manual, not every USB-C port: HP manuals and user guides.
  3. Match the cable or dock to the documented mode. For a USB-C-to-DisplayPort monitor connection, VESA recommends a DP-certified adapter cable. A cable cannot add video output to a port that does not support it: VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C FAQ.
  4. Check the display details as well. Confirm the resolution and refresh rate supported by the device documentation and the monitor input. A port symbol alone does not establish either value.

For multiple peripherals, a dock may combine display, USB, and power connections, but it must support the host’s documented display mode. A USB-only hub is not the same as a dock that provides video: VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C FAQ.

How to check USB-C charging

Check the device’s power-input requirements and the specifications for the specific port, then compare them with the charger and cable. A charging icon by itself does not establish how much power the port can deliver or accept. Microsoft notes that faster charging requires the charger and cable to support the power levels the device needs: Microsoft’s USB-C and fast-charging guidance.

What to confirm before choosing a cable or dock

  • For a monitor: Confirm that the source supports DisplayPort over USB-C, Thunderbolt, or another documented display mode, and check the display input you need.
  • For a direct connection: Choose a cable or adapter that matches the source mode and display connector. VESA recommends a DP-certified adapter cable for USB-C-to-DisplayPort connections.
  • For a dock: Verify host compatibility and supported display mode; decide whether you need just a display connection or also USB peripherals and power.
  • For charging: Match the device, charger, and cable capabilities. Do not infer charging wattage from a symbol.

The cited guidance does not establish universal resolution, refresh-rate, or charging-wattage performance for a particular cable or dock. Those depend on the exact devices and accessories.
