USB-C describes the connector’s shape, not a guaranteed set of features. On a particular laptop, one USB-C port may support video or charging while another handles data only. To find the right one, check the specifications and manual for your exact laptop model, then match the port to your task.
What makes a USB-C port “real” for your task?
There is no universal “real” USB-C port. The useful question is whether a specific port supports the function you need: data transfer, video output, or charging the laptop. An unmarked or less capable port is not fake; its capabilities simply differ. MSI puts it plainly: “USB Type-C only defines the physical shape of the connector.” MSI Support explains that USB-C implementations vary by model.
These functions are separate. A port can transfer data without sending video, and USB-C video support does not by itself establish that the port can charge the laptop. ASUS distinguishes among USB-C ports with charging, display, and full-featured capabilities; MSI notes that supported Power Delivery wattage and voltage vary by model. Check the documentation for your laptop rather than inferring features from the connector alone.
How to identify the right port on your laptop
- Find the complete model name. Include its model number or generation; a series name alone may cover different configurations.
- Open the manufacturer’s technical specifications. Find the I/O, interface, or ports section and inspect each USB-C entry. For a monitor, look for “DisplayPort,” “DP,” “video output,” or a documented USB-C display capability. For laptop charging, look for “Power Delivery” input or charging information. Thunderbolt or USB4 may also support video, but verify the details for that laptop. MSI’s model-specific guidance recommends checking the exact model’s specifications.
- Check the manual’s port diagram. It may identify the ports and describe their supported functions. ASUS recommends checking both its product specifications and e-manual for the exact model. ASUS’s USB-C port guidance also points to port markings as clues.
- Treat symbols as clues, not proof. A lightning-bolt mark can indicate Thunderbolt, and some models use a plug mark for Thunderbolt with Power Delivery. Conventions differ, so confirm what a symbol means in your laptop’s manual. MSI’s guide describes these markings for the models it covers.
- Match the documented port to the task. Use a port whose specifications explicitly support the feature you need; do not assume that adjacent USB-C ports are interchangeable.
For a monitor, check every part of the video path
A USB-C monitor setup works only if the laptop port, cable, and display or hub support a compatible video method. For DisplayPort Alt Mode, the laptop port must support video output and the cable must carry video. A charging-only or USB 2.0 cable is not designed to transmit Alt Mode video. A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is not a native USB-C video path, according to Plugable’s video and cable guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Thunderbolt and USB4 can carry video using tunneling rather than the earlier Alt Mode mechanism. That does not make every combination compatible: the laptop, accessory, cable, and display still need to support a matching connection and the monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate requirements. Check the specifications of each component before buying or troubleshooting.
When a USB-C hub can help
A hub can combine connections such as HDMI, USB peripherals, Ethernet, and card readers, but it cannot make an unsupported laptop port provide native USB-C video. Before choosing one, verify that the laptop port supports the hub’s video method and that any charging passthrough matches the laptop’s Power Delivery requirements.

For example, Plugable describes its USBC-7IN1E hub as offering HDMI, peripheral ports, Ethernet, card readers, and 100W Power Delivery passthrough for compatible hosts. That description does not establish compatibility with an unspecified laptop, nor does it confirm current retail availability or price. Check the hub’s specifications against your exact laptop and setup. Plugable’s product page provides its stated features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your laptop’s USB-C port does not support video
A standard USB-C Alt Mode hub cannot add video capability that the laptop port lacks. DisplayLink-based products are a separate display-expansion option; they use software and drivers, so check the product’s requirements and whether that approach suits your setup. Plugable’s guidance on USB-C video discusses this distinction.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What to compare before connecting or buying
- Port functions: Confirm whether the laptop port supports data, video, laptop charging, or some combination.
- Video requirements: Match the video method and the monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate needs across the laptop, hub, cable, and display.
- Charging: Check the laptop’s supported Power Delivery input and compare it with the charger or hub’s output. The advertised maximum output of an accessory does not prove that your laptop accepts that amount.
- Hub compatibility: Confirm that the hub supports the host’s video method and the connections you need.
- Cable capability: Check video support and relevant data and power ratings; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee them.
Because the exact laptop model is not specified, its port markings, video support, charging limits, number of full-featured ports, and compatibility with a particular hub cannot be determined here. The model-specific specifications and manual are the deciding references.
