Maybe—but a USB-C port alone does not mean your laptop can charge through it. Check the exact model’s official specifications and manual for USB Power Delivery (USB PD) charging input, then match the charger and cable to the laptop’s documented requirements.
How to tell whether your laptop accepts USB-C charging
USB-C describes the connector shape, not every function it supports. A port may handle data, video output, charging input, or a combination. MSI explains that a USB Type-C port’s circuitry and functions vary by laptop model; its support guidance recommends checking the relevant model specifications.
- Find the full model identifier. Use the laptop’s complete model name and, if available, its product number or generation. A product family name may cover configurations with different ports.
- Open the manufacturer’s official specifications. Check the USB-C or I/O ports section for terms such as “USB Power Delivery,” “PD charging,” “power input,” or an explicit statement that a USB-C adapter can charge the computer. ASUS recommends checking port markings, official specifications, and the e-manual; MSI directs owners to the model’s Specifications page and I/O Ports section.
- Check the manual for the specific port. Review the port diagram and charging instructions. If the laptop has multiple USB-C ports, confirm which one accepts power; support may differ between them.
- Confirm the required power profile. Note the supported wattage and voltage, and whether the laptop can charge while running or only in a lower-power state.
Video output or Thunderbolt support is not proof of USB-C charging input. MSI lists display output and Power Delivery charging as separate functions, so look for charging language specifically.

If the manufacturer confirms USB-C charging, compare the source with the laptop’s stated requirements. A phone charger may provide too little power, and a cable must be rated for the power level used. A compatible USB-C PD power bank can work for mobile backup. A powered monitor or dock may also charge the laptop while connected, if both devices support the required power arrangement.

- Laptop input support: The exact model and port must accept USB-C PD input.
- Charger output: Match the voltage and wattage profile specified for the laptop. A higher-wattage PD charger does not simply force all its power into the computer; compatible devices negotiate power. Compatibility still matters.
- Cable rating: Use a cable rated for the required power. USB-IF’s cited 240 W capability applies to compatible equipment and a full-featured USB-C cable.
- Use case: A wall charger suits desk use, a compatible power bank can provide backup, and a powered display or dock can combine charging with peripherals.
- Safety: Lenovo advises selecting a safety-approved or certified third-party charger in its model documentation. Follow certification requirements that apply in your country.
What USB Power Delivery ratings do—and do not—tell you
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a standard for negotiating power over a cable; it does not guarantee that every USB-C laptop port accepts charging. USB-IF says USB PD Revision 3.1, announced in 2021, enables up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. Its cited fixed voltage levels include 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are standard capabilities, not the charging specification of every laptop.
A model-specific example shows why the distinction matters: Lenovo’s 2023 ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 documentation describes USB-C input up to 20 V and 7 A, and gives input examples requiring at least 20 V and 2.25 A. It distinguishes charging behavior according to the source output and whether the computer is running, asleep, hibernating, or powered off, and warns that USB-C input may not provide full computer performance. Those figures apply to that model, not laptops generally.

If the laptop does not charge over USB-C
Before assuming the laptop is defective, work through these checks:
- Verify that you are using the documented charging port, not another USB-C port with different functions.
- Compare the charger’s output with the model’s supported voltage and wattage.
- Check that the cable is rated for the required power level.
- Check whether the laptop charges at that power level while running, or only in sleep, hibernation, or powered-off states.
- Consult the manufacturer’s support documentation or contact support with the complete model identifier if the requirements remain unclear.
A cable cannot add charging circuitry or power input support to a port that lacks it. Likewise, a port that supports data, video, or Thunderbolt does not necessarily accept charging input.
