Short answer: choose a USB-C Power Delivery (USB-PD) charger whose output matches your exact iPhone model, then use the correct USB-C or USB-C-to-Lightning cable. iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max target about 50% in 20 minutes with 40W or more; iPhone 17e and iPhone Air target about 50% in 30 minutes with 20W or more. iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max require a 60W-rated cable and a 60W-or-higher adapter supporting AVS and USB-PD 3.2 for Apple’s approximately 15-minute, 50% claim. These are Apple test targets, not guarantees for every charging session.

For older supported phones, Apple’s general fast-charge guidance starts at an 18W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or a comparable USB-PD adapter. iPhone 15 and newer use USB-C; earlier models use USB-C-to-Lightning for wired fast charging. The cable rating matters most when Apple specifies it for a particular model, while the charger must provide the required protocol and power at the port you actually use.

Match the charger to your iPhone model

There is no single wattage that makes every iPhone charge at the same speed. Apple’s current model-specific guidance separates the iPhone 17 family from the iPhone 18 Pro models, and its general fast-charge article covers earlier phones. Before buying anything, identify the exact model in Settings > General > About or on the box.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What the watt number really means

A charger marked “65W” or “100W” is not automatically the right choice. The iPhone negotiates a charging profile with the adapter, and the adapter must support USB-PD and deliver suitable voltage and current from the port in use. A high headline wattage can still be unsuitable if it lacks the required protocol, if its USB-C port shares power with another device, or if its advertised maximum is not available continuously.

For the iPhone 17 family, Apple’s third-party-adapter guidance lists USB-C output, 40W continuous sustained power, 60W maximum power, and specific AVS/output voltage-current profiles. For iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple calls for a 60W-capable adapter supporting AVS and USB-PD 3.2. Treat those as model-specific electrical requirements rather than replacing them with the vague advice to buy the biggest charger available.

Choose the right cable

USB-C iPhones

iPhone 15 and later have a USB-C port. Apple’s wording is direct: “For faster wired charging, use a USB-C Power Delivery charger and a USB-C cable for iPhone 15 models and later.” The cable included with a USB-C iPhone is the sensible default for normal charging and for the iPhone 17 family unless Apple lists a higher rating for your model.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, use a USB-C cable rated for at least 60W. A cable can carry data and power while still having a lower power rating, so check the packaging or manufacturer specification rather than assuming every USB-C cable is equivalent. The 60W instruction is specific to those models and should not be generalized to every iPhone.

Lightning iPhones

iPhone 14 and earlier models use a Lightning port. Fast wired charging uses a USB-C-to-Lightning cable connected to a USB-C PD adapter. Apple’s general guidance covers iPhone 8 and newer, provided the phone, adapter and cable support the required arrangement. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable cannot plug directly into a Lightning iPhone.

Do not confuse connector shape with charging capability

USB-C describes the connector; USB-PD describes the power-negotiation standard. Both matter. A USB-C cable connected to a non-PD source may charge an iPhone, but it will not necessarily provide the faster wired rates Apple describes. Conversely, a PD adapter cannot overcome a damaged, incompatible or incorrectly terminated cable.

USB-PD, AVS and port selection

When comparing third-party adapters, check the technical label or specification sheet for all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • USB-C output: the port must be USB-C, not merely a USB-A port on the same charger.
  • USB Power Delivery: Apple recommends USB-PD for faster wired charging.
  • Available sustained power: for iPhone 17-family guidance, look for 40W continuous capability and up to 60W maximum where the adapter specification lists it.
  • AVS and USB-PD generation: iPhone 18 Pro fast charging calls for AVS and USB-PD 3.2 with at least 60W capability.
  • Per-port output: on a multiport unit, verify what the USB-C port can supply while another port is occupied.

Apple’s About iPhone charge speeds explains that a USB-C charger can provide faster charging on USB-C iPhones, while USB-A charging on iPhone 15 models and later is limited to a maximum of 7.5W. That USB-A limit is why an old USB-A wall brick can be much slower even when the cable appears to fit through an adapter.

Wired and MagSafe charging are different targets

Wired wattage recommendations do not describe wireless charging. MagSafe has its own adapter and charger requirements. Apple says iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air can wirelessly fast-charge with a MagSafe charger and an Apple 30W-or-greater USB-C adapter or a comparable third-party USB-PD adapter. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple lists MagSafe charging up to 15W with a 20W-or-greater USB-C adapter or comparable USB-PD adapter. iPhone 18 Pro models have separate, newer MagSafe instructions, so check the model-specific Apple page before relying on a previous recommendation.

Wireless output can also be limited when a USB-C or Lightning accessory is connected, because of regulatory and model-specific limits. Do not assume that attaching a wired accessory while a phone sits on MagSafe will preserve the advertised peak wireless rate. Apple’s current wired and MagSafe details are on Fast charge your iPhone.

How to set up the fastest supported wired charge

  1. Confirm the model and connector. Use USB-C for iPhone 15 and newer. Use USB-C-to-Lightning for earlier Lightning models.
  2. Check the adapter specification. Select a USB-C PD adapter meeting your model’s wattage. For iPhone 18 Pro, confirm 60W capability, AVS and USB-PD 3.2. For iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, use 40W or more. For iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, use 20W or more. For earlier supported models, use at least 18W.
  3. Use an appropriate cable. Start with the cable in the phone’s box. Replace it only with a cable whose connector and power rating match the phone; iPhone 18 Pro requires at least 60W cable capability.
  4. Connect directly to the adapter. Plug the cable into the wall adapter’s USB-C port, not a hub, keyboard, vehicle USB port or low-power extension.
  5. Reduce competing loads. If the adapter has several ports, disconnect other devices while the iPhone is charging or move the phone to a port with the required dedicated output.
  6. Let the phone cool and idle. Lock the screen and pause demanding games, video processing or navigation. Move a hot phone and adapter to a cooler, ventilated place.

These steps implement Apple’s published recommendations; they do not guarantee a particular percentage by a particular minute.

Why an iPhone may charge slowly

The source is limited to 7.5W or less

Apple identifies wired sources providing 7.5W or less as a common reason for slow charging. This includes many USB-A ports and older low-power adapters. On iOS 18 and later, the iPhone may display a “Slow Charger” message when a higher-wattage adapter could improve charging.

A multiport adapter is sharing power

Multiport chargers often redistribute their total output when two or more devices are connected. A unit advertised at a high total wattage may provide less to the iPhone once a laptop, tablet or second phone is attached. Check the per-port table in the adapter’s specification and test with the other ports empty.

The phone is connected through a hub, car port or computer

USB hubs, vehicle ports and computer ports can provide less power than a wall adapter and may negotiate a slower profile. For the fastest supported rate, connect directly to a compliant USB-C PD wall adapter.

The phone is hot, cold or working hard

Apple states that fast charging might not work in conditions that are too cold or too hot. Intensive processor or graphics use while charging also slows the net battery increase because part of the incoming power is being used immediately. Stop demanding apps, remove insulating coverings and allow the phone to return to a moderate temperature.

The cable, port or connection is faulty

Inspect both connectors for debris, looseness or visible damage. Reseat the cable and try the known-good cable supplied with the phone. If charging repeatedly starts and stops, clean the port only according to Apple’s safety guidance and avoid forcing a connector; a damaged port or cable needs service rather than a higher-wattage adapter.

Buying checklist

Use this checklist when replacing an adapter or cable:

  • Write down the exact iPhone model, not just the generation.
  • Choose wired or MagSafe first; the requirements are different.
  • For wired charging, select USB-C PD and the model’s minimum wattage.
  • For iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max, verify AVS, USB-PD 3.2, 60W-or-greater adapter capability and a 60W-or-greater USB-C cable.
  • For iPhone 17, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, select 40W or higher and use the supplied USB-C cable when possible.
  • For iPhone 17e or iPhone Air, 20W or higher is Apple’s stated target.
  • For earlier fast-charge-compatible iPhones, use an 18W-or-greater USB-C PD adapter and the correct USB-C-to-Lightning cable.
  • Check sustained and per-port output, especially on multiport chargers.
  • Keep Apple’s current model page bookmarked because the lineup, software notices and accessory requirements can change.

Apple’s detailed specifications and test conditions are available in Power adapters for iPhone, Fast charge your iPhone, About iPhone charge speeds and Charge and connect with the USB-C connector on your iPhone. The practical rule is simple: match the exact model, use USB-PD over USB-C, select the specified cable rating, and eliminate shared or overheated power sources when charging is slow.
