Yes—the U.S. Army demonstrated that an MH-47G Chinook can land on an uncrewed barge at sea and complete a refueling. The test, involving the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (the “Night Stalkers”), showed the basic feasibility of using an autonomous vessel as a mobile logistics point. It did not establish a fielded capability, a specific fuel capacity, or a measured increase in helicopter range.
What the Army helicopter test demonstrated
The demonstration paired an MH-47G Chinook operated by the 160th SOAR with an uncrewed barge operating at sea. The helicopter landed on the vessel and completed a refueling operation. That sequence is important because it combines two difficult tasks: bringing a large special-operations helicopter onto a moving maritime platform and transferring fuel without a conventional shore base or crewed support ship.
The practical concept is a distributed logistics node. Instead of requiring the Chinook to return to a fixed airfield, a mobile barge could position fuel closer to a planned route. That could help planners support operations over long distances or in areas where shore facilities are unavailable. This is an operational implication of the arrangement, not an announced Army deployment plan.
Can an autonomous barge refuel a Chinook at sea?
In this reported event, it did. The MH-47G landed on the uncrewed barge and completed refueling. Public reporting does not state how much fuel was transferred, how long the helicopter remained alongside, or whether the barge performed every part of its approach autonomously. The evidence therefore supports a feasibility demonstration, not a quantified refueling capability.

What remains unverified
- The demonstration’s exact location and the page’s date beyond “Sep. 28” are not identified.
- Fuel volume, transfer rate and total time alongside were not published.
- Weather, sea state and other environmental conditions were not reported.
- The available account does not say whether autonomous navigation controlled the barge during the final approach and landing.
- No validated figure shows how many additional miles or hours of helicopter operation the barge enabled.
How the Sea Machines SM300 fits into the system
The barge used Sea Machines Robotics’ SM300 autonomy system. It should be understood as a vessel-autonomy controller rather than a complete military vessel. The reported functions include automated navigation, route execution and remote supervisory control.
Navigation and route execution
The SM300 can direct a vessel along a planned route and manage navigation tasks while the barge operates without people physically aboard. The system is designed to work with different propulsion and steering arrangements, allowing an autonomy package to be adapted to the underlying vessel.

Remote supervision
Human supervision remains part of the concept. Operators can monitor the vessel and supervise its behavior remotely rather than treating the barge as an independent decision-maker. That distinction matters for communications planning, rules of engagement, fault handling and the recovery of a vessel that loses navigation or communications.

The Army’s Engineer Research and Development Center separately describes SAMPOL kits for coastal and riverine logistics. Those kits combine Thrust Master propulsion with Sea Machines autonomy. SAMPOL indicates that the service is examining modular autonomous logistics equipment for inland and littoral environments, while the Chinook event shows how an uncrewed surface platform could support aviation operations at sea. The two efforts are related in technology but are not the same reported demonstration.

Could barges extend special-operations helicopter range?
Potentially, but the test did not measure or publish a range increase. A barge carrying aviation fuel could move a replenishment point closer to a helicopter’s route, reducing reliance on fixed airfields or shore bases. The actual benefit would depend on fuel capacity, sea conditions, vessel speed, positioning accuracy, turnaround time and the ability to protect and resupply the barge.
Compared with other refueling options
Autonomous barges offer mobility and distribution, but they trade the protection and infrastructure of a major base or naval ship for a smaller, more exposed platform. They also differ from aerial refueling, which can support aircraft without requiring a landing but depends on tanker availability, compatible equipment and safe rendezvous procedures.

Important planning questions include:
- Mobility: Can the support point move as the mission changes?
- Capacity: How much fuel and equipment can the vessel carry?
- Weather tolerance: Can it operate and support a landing in the required sea conditions?
- Detectability and vulnerability: Can adversaries find, jam or attack it?
- Communications: What happens if supervisory links are disrupted?
- Supervision and setup: How many operators and how much time are needed to prepare the site?
- Contested-water operations: Can the vessel safely reach and remain at the intended location?
These are analytical trade-offs of the platform concept. The public account of the test does not provide performance results for them.

Is this connected to the Army’s autonomous Black Hawk program?
It is part of the broader Army and defense push toward autonomy, but the barge test and the Black Hawk effort are separate programs involving different vehicles and missions.

H-60Mx and MATRIX
DARPA says an experimental fly-by-wire H-60Mx Black Hawk equipped with Sikorsky’s MATRIX autonomy system was delivered to the Army for advanced operational testing on March 20, 2026. DARPA also says the ALIAS/MATRIX program demonstrated the first uninhabited Black Hawk flight in 2022, including pre-flight checks, mission execution, autonomous landing and responses to simulated failures.
Army-owned UH-60M installation
In an October 14, 2024 announcement, Lockheed Martin said Sikorsky received a $6 million DARPA award to install ALIAS/MATRIX on an Army-owned UH-60M. The stated evaluation path ran from single-pilot operation toward fully uninhabited flight, with Army developmental organizations assessing the autonomy.
The relationship is therefore strategic rather than direct: the Black Hawk program addresses autonomous flight, while the Chinook event examined an autonomous maritime support platform for crewed aviation operations.

The strongest conclusion is narrow but significant: an MH-47G Chinook landed on an uncrewed barge at sea and refueled, showing that a mobile autonomous vessel can serve as a maritime aviation support point under test conditions. It does not prove that such barges are ready for routine combat logistics, that they can operate independently in contested waters, or that they deliver a known increase in range. Those questions require additional demonstrations with published data on fuel handling, sea states, communications, survivability and repeatability.
