To upload a high-definition thumbnail, use a verified YouTube account, prepare an image in the right orientation and file size, then upload it in YouTube Studio and save. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard videos and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts; the upload size limit varies by device and content type.
Prepare the image for the video type
YouTube’s recommended dimensions and aspect ratio differ for standard videos and Shorts. The figures below are recommendations and minimums from YouTube Help, not a promise that every viewing surface will display every pixel at full resolution.

The limits are specific to the upload device and content type. YouTube lists JPG and PNG among supported image formats and recommends making the image as large as possible. For a standard video, keep a mobile upload at or below 2 MB; using Studio on a computer gives a 50 MB ceiling.

You need a verified YouTube account to use custom thumbnails. For an existing video, follow this desktop Studio path:

- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content in the left navigation and select the video.
- In the video details, find Thumbnail and choose Upload file to select your image.
- Choose Save.
If YouTube offers Get suggestions, you can choose a generated option instead of uploading your own image. During a new video upload, YouTube also prompts you to edit video details after you select the video file; the thumbnail is set in those details. See YouTube’s computer upload instructions.
Set a custom thumbnail for a Short
YouTube currently manages custom Shorts thumbnails through YouTube Studio on a computer. Prepare a vertical image at the recommended 2160 × 3840 px and 9:16 ratio, and use the desktop upload route. The Help page lists a 50 MB desktop limit for Shorts thumbnails. Do not assume the mobile standard-video limit or appearance behavior applies to Shorts.

Know where the thumbnail will appear
For vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on YouTube’s home, explore, and subscriptions pages. YouTube says the custom thumbnail remains visible in other contexts, including the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. A saved thumbnail change may also take time to appear.
Fix upload problems and avoid policy strikes
- Custom-thumbnail option is unavailable: confirm that the account is verified and that you are editing the intended video in Studio. Shorts custom thumbnails are handled in Studio on a computer.
- File is rejected: check the image format, dimensions, and device-specific size limit. A standard-video image uploaded from mobile has a 2 MB limit, not the desktop 50 MB limit.
- Daily limit reached: upload allowances can vary with region and channel history. If YouTube displays “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” its stated remedy is to try again after 24 hours. Copyright strikes may affect channel-history eligibility; Community Guidelines strikes affect upload allowance.
- Thumbnail is rejected or a strike is issued: custom images must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube names nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection and a strike. Repeated offenses may remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or result in account termination. YouTube says creators can appeal a strike they believe is mistaken; if the appeal is approved, the image may be restored if it has not already been replaced.
Compare thumbnail options with Test & Compare
YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare feature lets eligible creators test up to three thumbnail variants. According to YouTube Help, the feature is available on desktop, requires advanced features, and is limited to public long-form videos and podcast episodes. Made-for-kids, mature-audience, and private videos are excluded. A Premiere becomes eligible after it ends and converts to a long-form video; Shorts are not eligible.

YouTube evaluates the variants by watch-time share. It recommends high-resolution images; if any thumbnail in the experiment is below 1280 × 720, all the experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480. This is a way to compare alternatives, not a guarantee of higher clicks, views, or watch time.
