To upload a movie to Google Drive, open Drive on a computer and choose New → File upload, or use the Drive app on Android and choose New → Upload. After the upload finishes, you can open the video in Drive or share it with selected people. Uploading and video processing are separate: a movie may still be preparing for playback on other devices even when it opens in the browser session that uploaded it.

Upload a movie from a computer

  1. Go to drive.google.com and sign in to the Google Account you want to use.
  2. Open the destination folder, or stay in My Drive.
  3. Select New → File upload, then choose the movie file.
  4. Wait for the upload to finish and confirm that the file appears in Drive before closing the tab.
  5. Open the video in Drive to check whether it plays.

You can also drag a file into a Drive browser window or use Drive for desktop. To upload a whole folder in the web interface, Google’s documented route is New → Folder upload. Uploading into someone else’s folder does not make the file use their storage: Google says the uploaded file uses the uploader’s Drive storage.

Upload a movie from an Android phone

  1. Open the Google Drive app and tap New.
  2. Tap Upload, find the movie on your phone, and tap it.
  3. Keep Drive open until the upload completes, then check that the video appears in the destination folder.

You can also select a video in your photos app, use its Share option, choose Drive, and save it there. Google recommends Wi-Fi for the best upload speed; Drive also has a setting to restrict file transfers to Wi-Fi. On an iPhone, use the upload controls currently shown in the Drive app, since the precise steps and labels may differ by app version.

Check storage and playback limits

Google Drive Help says a video can be stored up to 5 TB if the account has purchased at least that much storage; otherwise, the limit is the storage available to that account. This is not a guarantee that every account can upload a 5 TB file. A movie also has to fit within the account’s available quota.

Drive can accept videos at any resolution, but Google lists a maximum in-Drive playback resolution of 1920 × 1080. A 4K source may be stored, but do not expect Drive to stream it in 4K. Playback quality can also depend on the internet connection.

Google lists WebM (VP8 video, Vorbis audio); MPEG4, 3GPP, and MOV (H.264 or MPEG4 video, AAC audio); AVI (MJPEG video, PCM audio); MPEGPS (MPEG2 video, MP2 audio); WMV; FLV (FLV1 video, MP3 audio); MTS; and OGG as supported video formats. Google cautions that not every video type works on every device. The file extension alone does not guarantee playback: the video and audio codecs matter too.

Drive can store file types that it cannot preview. In other words, a movie file may upload successfully but still not play within Drive if its format, codec, or device is incompatible.

Why a Drive video may still be processing

Uploading puts the file in Drive; processing prepares it for playback. Google notes that a video may play immediately in the same browser session used to upload it while it is still processing for other devices or people it has been shared with. If Drive says the video is still processing, wait and try opening it again later.

Troubleshoot upload or playback problems

Work through these checks in order; they are possible fixes, not a single guaranteed diagnosis.

  1. Check the connection. Retry on a stable network. On Android, consider Wi-Fi, especially for a large movie.
  2. Check available Drive storage. Confirm the account has enough space for the file, including when you uploaded it into another person’s folder.
  3. Allow processing time. If the upload completed but playback shows a processing message, wait before testing on another device or asking a recipient to try again.
  4. Check the format and codecs. Compare both the container and the audio/video codecs with Google’s supported formats; a familiar extension is not enough to establish compatibility.
  5. Try another browser or a private/incognito window. If playback works there, an extension or browser setting may be interfering. Temporarily disable extensions and test again.
  6. Check browser cookies. Google says third-party cookies need to be enabled to play videos in Drive in a browser.
  7. Switch apps or refresh the software. Try Drive for desktop or the mobile app, update the browser or app, then sign out of Drive and sign back in.

Share the movie with the right people

  1. Select the file in Drive and choose Share.
  2. Add the intended recipient, or review the file’s general access settings before sending a link.
  3. Choose the least permissive role that meets the need: Viewer can view, Commenter can add comments, and Editor can edit and share.
  4. Check the audience and any download controls before sending. Viewers can download by default, though the owner can control this.

Do not assume a link is open to everyone: file permissions and work or school administrator settings can restrict access, including sharing outside an organization. If the recipient only needs to watch, use Viewer access where available.
