For routine, lower-value payments in India, UPI is usually the most convenient choice when both parties’ banks or apps support it. Use NEFT when you’re transferring money to a bank account and half-hourly batch processing is acceptable; choose RTGS for transfers of ₹2 lakh or more when you need real-time settlement. For a merchant purchase, use a debit or credit card if it is accepted and the issuer’s current terms suit you. A mobile wallet is useful when the merchant accepts its stored balance, but that balance is not the same as money held in your bank account.
The right answer to “which payment method should you use?” depends on the recipient, amount, urgency, acceptance, and provider rules. Here’s how the options differ—and what to check before sending money.
Choose by payment need
| Method | Best fit | How it processes or works | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI | Routine person-to-person transfers and merchant payments | NPCI describes UPI as instant and available 24/7. | Recipient details, bank and app support, transaction category and limits, and PIN safety. |
| NEFT | Account-to-account transfers when you know the recipient’s bank details and batch processing is acceptable | Available 24×7×365 and processed in half-hourly batches. | Recipient details, your bank’s channel limits and its outward-charge schedule. |
| RTGS | Transfers of ₹2 lakh or more when real-time settlement is wanted | Transfers are processed individually in real time, 24×7×365. | Your bank’s access and charges, and the beneficiary details. |
| Debit or credit card | Merchant purchases where the card is accepted and its terms suit the transaction | Authorization and settlement follow the card network and issuer’s rules. | Issuer fees, rewards, billing terms, security settings and dispute process. |
| Mobile wallet or PPI | Purchases from a loaded balance at a wallet-enabled merchant | Uses stored value; interoperability depends on the PPI type and KYC status. | Acceptance, full-KYC status if interoperability matters, issuer charges and complaint route. |
These are different payment rails and instruments, not interchangeable versions of the same service. NPCI and RBI describe the payment-system rules; your bank, card issuer or wallet provider can set additional terms within the applicable rules.

UPI: instant payments from linked bank accounts
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) describes the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a system for transfers between bank accounts and merchant payments. It is designed to be instant and available 24/7. You generally need a participating app and a linked account; NPCI’s FAQ also describes linkage with prepaid payment instruments (PPIs). NPCI’s UPI product overview and UPI FAQ explain the service and its use.

UPI fits everyday transfers and checkout when the recipient or merchant supports it. Check the payee carefully before authorizing a payment: NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. The UPI PIN authorizes a transaction; it is not a way to receive money, and you should never disclose it.
NEFT: bank transfers in half-hourly batches
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) makes the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) system available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including holidays. It processes transfers in half-hourly batches rather than settling each payment individually in real time. RBI sets no minimum or maximum transfer amount for NEFT, although a bank may impose channel or account rules. See the RBI’s NEFT FAQ.
Choose NEFT when you’re sending money to a bank account and the batch model works for your timing. Because this is an account transfer, carefully enter the beneficiary information requested by your bank and review it before confirming.
RTGS: individual, real-time settlement for larger transfers
Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) processes transfers individually in real time and is available 24×7×365. RBI sets a minimum of ₹2 lakh and no upper ceiling. A bank’s own access, account and channel rules still apply, so confirm that you can make the transfer through your chosen channel. The RBI’s RTGS FAQ explains the system and its charges.
RTGS is the natural fit when the amount is at least ₹2 lakh and real-time settlement is important. It is not the option for a transfer below the RBI-set minimum.
Cards and mobile wallets are different from bank transfers
Debit and credit cards: use the issuer’s terms, not assumptions
A card is a merchant-payment option, not a direct comparison to NEFT or RTGS. A debit card draws on the account under its issuer’s arrangements; a credit card purchase is governed by the issuer’s billing terms. Whether a card is suitable depends on acceptance and the particular card’s fees, rewards, security controls and dispute process. There is no universal card benefit: check the issuer’s current terms for the exact card and transaction.
A card’s usefulness is therefore less about a universal speed or reward advantage and more about its fit for that purchase. Before using one, check the amount, applicable issuer fee, any reward or benefit conditions, how the purchase will appear under the card’s billing terms, and how to report a transaction you do not recognize. A reward advertised for a card should not be treated as guaranteed for every merchant or transaction type.

For unauthorized electronic banking transactions, RBI’s directions distinguish bank fault, third-party breach and customer negligence. If credentials are shared, the customer bears the loss until reporting. In qualifying third-party cases, timely reporting can result in zero or limited liability. Read the issuer’s official reporting process and contact it promptly if you suspect misuse. RBI’s directions on customer liability for unauthorized electronic banking transactions describe the framework.
Mobile wallets: stored value, with interoperability tied to PPI rules
RBI classifies wallets as prepaid payment instruments (PPIs): payment instruments that hold stored value. A wallet balance is therefore not identical to a bank-account balance. Whether you can use it at a particular merchant depends on acceptance, while interoperability depends on the kind of PPI and its KYC status. RBI’s rules provide for interoperability for full-KYC PPIs; wallet-to-wallet and wallet-to-card interoperability use different mechanisms. Consult the RBI’s PPI master directions and your provider’s terms.
A wallet makes sense when you already have an eligible balance and the merchant accepts it. If you need the wallet to work across payment systems, verify that it is full KYC and check which interoperability mechanism the provider supports.
In practical terms, do not assume that a wallet balance can be used wherever UPI or a card is accepted, or that every wallet has the same transfer options. Confirm the provider’s acceptance and relevant PPI status before loading value for a specific use. The rules distinguish types of PPIs and interoperability mechanisms, so the word “wallet” by itself does not tell you what a particular account can do.

What the methods cost—and where limits apply
Fees and transaction ceilings vary by payment method and, in some cases, by bank, app, issuer, transaction category or channel. The figures below are official RBI or NPCI rules described in the linked material, not a guarantee of what a particular provider will allow or charge. Verify current terms before making a large or time-sensitive payment.
UPI limits depend on the transaction category and provider
NPCI’s FAQ states an ordinary UPI limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. It describes higher ceilings—up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. These are ceilings for specified cases, not amounts every bank or app must permit; a bank may impose its own limits within the prescribed ceiling. Check the category and the limit shown by your bank or app.
For verified merchants, NPCI’s circular dated August 28, 2025, raised limits for specified categories aligned to tax payments and other listed categories; it left person-to-person (P2P) limits under existing rules. Acquiring banks may set internal limits within NPCI ceilings. Since the change is category-specific, confirm the applicable category and rule with the bank or app rather than assuming the higher ceiling applies to any merchant payment. See NPCI circular NPCI/UPI/2025-26/OC/185B.

That distinction matters if a payment fails because the amount exceeds a limit: the ordinary per-transaction figure, a special category ceiling and the limit actually enabled by your bank or app are not necessarily the same. Check the type of transaction as well as the amount. A higher ceiling for a named category is not a general-purpose UPI limit, and the 2025 change specifically left P2P limits under existing rules.

NEFT charges are capped by RBI, but a bank may charge less
RBI’s NEFT FAQ lists maximum outward charges by amount, plus applicable GST. Your bank may charge less, so check its current schedule.
| NEFT transfer amount | RBI maximum outward charge |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹10,000 | ₹2.50, plus applicable GST |
| Above ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh | ₹5, plus applicable GST |
| Above ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh | ₹15, plus applicable GST |
| Above ₹2 lakh | ₹25, plus applicable GST |
The table describes outward charges under RBI’s FAQ; it does not mean every NEFT transfer costs the maximum. For a transfer where cost matters, look at the bank’s current schedule for the channel you plan to use and confirm any applicable tax. RBI’s no-floor/no-ceiling rule for NEFT concerns the system amount range, not a promise that every bank channel will permit every amount.
RTGS charges depend on amount and whether money is sent or received
RBI’s FAQ says incoming RTGS transactions are free. For outward transfers, its charge caps are exclusive of tax, if applicable. Confirm the charge your bank currently applies.
| RTGS transfer | RBI charge rule |
|---|---|
| Inward | Free |
| Outward, ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh | Up to ₹25, exclusive of tax if applicable |
| Outward, above ₹5 lakh | Up to ₹50, exclusive of tax if applicable |
For a high-value payment, weigh the settlement requirement alongside the fee. RTGS has a ₹2 lakh minimum and no RBI-set upper ceiling, but your bank still governs access through its account and channel rules. NEFT is an alternative for bank transfers across amounts without an RBI-set minimum or ceiling when its half-hourly batch processing fits the timing.

There is no single card fee, reward, billing period or dispute outcome that applies across issuers, and wallet charges depend on the provider’s terms. Check the exact card or wallet agreement before relying on a benefit or making a payment. The available comparison does not establish that cards or wallets are universally cheaper, safer or more rewarding than UPI or a bank transfer.
Which method should you use in common situations?
- Paying a friend or another person: UPI is the practical starting point if both sides’ participating banks or apps support the payment and you can verify the recipient. Check the amount against the applicable P2P limit, and remember that an initiated payment cannot be stopped.
- Paying a small merchant at checkout: Use UPI if the merchant supports it and your bank or app allows the amount. A card or wallet can also fit if accepted; compare the card’s issuer terms or confirm that the wallet balance and acceptance work for this purchase.
- Sending money to a bank account with no need for individual real-time processing: NEFT works when you have the beneficiary information the bank requests and half-hourly batches are acceptable. It is available around the clock, including holidays.
- Sending ₹2 lakh or more when real-time settlement matters: RTGS is designed for individual real-time processing and has no RBI-set upper ceiling. Confirm your bank’s access, charges and channel rules before relying on it.
- Using money already loaded in a wallet: Use the wallet if the merchant accepts it and the provider’s terms suit the purchase. If interoperability is important, check whether it is a full-KYC PPI and which mechanism applies.
- Choosing a card for a purchase: Use it when it is accepted and the current issuer terms make sense for that transaction. Check fees, billing, any conditions attached to a reward and the issuer’s dispute route rather than assuming a benefit.
When two methods appear equally convenient, the decision can come down to the details you can verify: the recipient’s payment support, your available limit, the provider’s charge, the settlement model and the route for reporting a problem. For urgent payments, distinguish “available 24/7” from “settled individually in real time”: UPI is described as instant, NEFT is continuously available but batch-processed, and RTGS is continuously available and individually processed in real time.

Make the choice in five steps
- Identify the recipient. For a person or small merchant, start with UPI if both sides’ banks or apps support it. For a bank-account transfer, NEFT or RTGS may fit better.
- Match the amount and urgency. NEFT has no RBI-set floor or ceiling and runs in half-hourly batches; RTGS is for ₹2 lakh or more and settles transfers individually in real time.
- Check acceptance and terms. At a merchant, use the payment method accepted there. For cards, check issuer terms; for wallets, confirm acceptance and any KYC requirement relevant to interoperability.
- Verify the recipient and limits. Check bank details or payee information before confirming. For UPI, verify that the bank or app permits the amount for your transaction category.
- Use the official channel and keep the record. Authorize through your bank, app, issuer or wallet provider. Save the transaction details and any complaint reference if something goes wrong.
For a larger or time-sensitive transfer, do these checks before you begin rather than after entering the payment details. Confirm which method the recipient can receive, whether your account or app allows the amount, and what charge applies. With UPI, verify the payee and amount because the payment cannot be stopped after initiation. With NEFT or RTGS, review the beneficiary details requested by your bank before confirming. Keep the resulting transaction record so you can identify the payment if you need help.

UPI debit without successful completion
NPCI’s FAQ describes real-time reversals for declined transactions. If the amount does not return, contact your bank; you can also check transaction status and raise a complaint through the UPI app. The exact handling and timing depend on the applicable scheme and bank rules, so do not assume every case follows the same refund schedule. NPCI’s UPI FAQ covers complaints and transaction status.
Suspected unauthorized transaction
Report suspected unauthorized activity immediately through the bank’s or issuer’s official channel. Preserve the complaint reference and transaction details. Under RBI’s framework, who is responsible and how quickly the customer reports the transaction affect liability; sharing credentials can leave the customer responsible for losses until reporting.
Credential safety
- Never share your UPI PIN. It authorizes a payment.
- Review the recipient and amount before approving; NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped after initiation.
- Use the bank, issuer or payment app’s official complaint route, and keep its reference number.
Do not treat the remedies for a declined UPI transaction and an unauthorized transaction as identical. For a declined payment that debited your account, check the transaction status and use the bank or app’s complaint route if the amount does not return. If you did not authorize a transaction, report it immediately to the relevant bank or issuer. RBI’s framework makes the facts, including customer negligence and the timing of the report, relevant to liability.
How widely UPI is used
In an October 8, 2025 circular, NPCI said: “UPI now processes approximately 20 billion transactions each month.” That is NPCI’s approximate figure as stated on that date, not a timeless monthly count. See NPCI’s October 8, 2025 circular.
The scale helps explain why UPI is a familiar choice for many routine payments, but transaction volume does not settle which method is best for an individual payment. Acceptance, amount limits, whether you need a bank transfer or merchant purchase, and the applicable fee and dispute terms remain the practical tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UPI always the best option for a payment in India?
No. UPI is a convenient default for routine person-to-person and merchant payments when the recipient and your bank or app support it, but the amount, category-specific limits and payee details matter. NEFT may suit an account transfer when batch processing is acceptable; RTGS is designed for transfers of ₹2 lakh or more when real-time settlement is wanted. Cards and wallets depend on merchant acceptance and provider terms.

What is the difference between NEFT and RTGS?
Both are bank-transfer systems available 24×7×365, but they process payments differently. NEFT runs in half-hourly batches and has no RBI-set minimum or maximum amount. RTGS processes transfers individually in real time, has a ₹2 lakh minimum and no RBI-set upper ceiling. Bank channel rules and charges still apply.
Can I use UPI for a payment above ₹1 lakh?
NPCI’s FAQ states an ordinary UPI limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, with higher ceilings for specified categories—up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. Special verified-merchant category rules were also updated in an August 28, 2025 circular, while P2P limits remained under existing rules. These are not guaranteed limits for every user: check the category and the limit your bank or app permits.
Are NEFT and RTGS transfers free?
Not necessarily. RBI lists maximum outward NEFT charges by amount, from ₹2.50 up to ₹25 plus applicable GST; a bank may charge less. RBI says inward RTGS is free and caps outward charges at ₹25 for ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh and ₹50 above ₹5 lakh, exclusive of tax if applicable. Check your bank’s current schedule and channel terms.
Is a mobile wallet balance the same as a bank balance?
No. RBI classifies wallets as prepaid payment instruments, which hold stored value. Merchant acceptance and transfer options depend on the provider and PPI type. Interoperability applies to full-KYC PPIs, with wallet-to-wallet and wallet-to-card interoperability using different mechanisms.
What should I do if a UPI payment is debited but does not complete?
Check the transaction status in the UPI app and raise a complaint there or contact your bank if the amount does not return. NPCI describes real-time reversals for declined transactions, but handling and timing depend on the applicable scheme and bank rules. If the transaction was unauthorized rather than merely unsuccessful, report it immediately through the bank’s official channel and keep the complaint reference.
Can I cancel a UPI payment after authorizing it?
NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. Verify the recipient and amount before authorizing, and never share your UPI PIN. If something goes wrong, use the UPI app or bank’s complaint route; report suspected unauthorized activity immediately.
The Bottom Line
For everyday person-to-person or merchant payments, start with UPI if it is supported and the amount fits your bank or app’s limit. Use NEFT when a bank-account transfer can be processed in half-hourly batches, and RTGS for ₹2 lakh or more when individual real-time settlement matters. Choose a card or wallet only after checking acceptance and the provider’s actual terms. Whichever method you use, verify the recipient, protect credentials and keep the official complaint route available.
