Choose UPI–NPI when both institutions support the new cross-border service and the recipient wants a mobile-number or VPA transfer. Choose the Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) when you need an established NEFT route, an NSBL account credit, or cash pickup in Nepal. The two routes have different eligibility rules, payout methods and fee schedules. Compare the final Indian-rupee debit and Nepal-rupee amount shown before authorizing any payment.

UPI or bank transfer: the practical answer

India-to-Nepal person-to-person payments now have two materially different options. UPI–NPI is the app-based linkage between India’s Unified Payments Interface and Nepal’s National Payments Interface. It was launched in June 2026 and is available only through participating banks and payment apps. INRF is the older, one-way bank-remittance route. It uses NEFT in India, a designated State Bank of India (SBI) channel and Nepal SBI Bank (NSBL) for account credit or cash payout.

Neither route is automatically cheapest for every transfer. UPI–NPI launch information describes the service as real-time and low-cost, but does not publish one universal tariff or exchange-rate formula. INRF charges vary by sender type, amount and whether the beneficiary has an NSBL account. The amount that matters is what leaves your account and what the recipient can actually collect.

What changed in June 2026

NPCI International and Nepal Clearing House announced the UPI–NPI linkage in Kathmandu on June 9, 2026. The Government of India’s announcement records the official launch on June 6, 2026. The different announcement dates describe the same June launch rather than two separate services.

The linkage is a person-to-person facility, not a promise that every UPI application can pay every Nepal user. Both sender and recipient must use participating institutions and consent once to cross-border transfers. Participation lists and app support can change, so check the current list in the app or on the operator’s service page immediately before sending.

Do not confuse this service with the 2024 UPI acceptance arrangement in Nepal. That arrangement concerns a person paying a merchant’s Nepal QR code. Paying a shop is not the same as sending money to an individual, and merchant-QR support does not prove that P2P UPI–NPI transfers are enabled.

How a UPI–NPI transfer works

Eligibility and setup

The Indian sender must use an enabled bank mobile application or participating non-bank TPAP payment app. The Nepal recipient must be reachable through a participating NPI institution. Each side gives the required one-time consent for cross-border transactions. If either institution is outside the live linkage, the payment cannot be completed through UPI–NPI; use INRF instead.

Recipient details

NCHL’s service information allows the sender to address a payment to the recipient’s Nepal mobile number or VPA. This avoids exchanging a bank account number, but it does not remove the need to verify identity. Confirm the displayed recipient name and the country indicator before proceeding. A mistyped mobile number or VPA can send money to the wrong person, and a completed UPI payment may not be reversible.

Sending procedure

  1. Open the enabled bank or TPAP app and select its international, cross-border or Nepal transfer option. Labels differ by provider.
  2. Choose Nepal and enter the recipient’s mobile number or VPA.
  3. Check the name returned by the app and enter the Indian-rupee amount.
  4. Review the displayed Indian-rupee debit, conversion into Nepalese rupees, exchange rate if shown, service fee and any tax or other charge.
  5. Confirm only when the recipient, amount and final NPR value are correct. Complete the app’s authentication step.
  6. Save the transaction reference and send it to the recipient through a separate trusted channel. Do not share a UPI PIN or one-time password.

Limits and provider controls

NCHL lists a maximum of INR 200,000 for one India-to-Nepal UPI–NPI transaction. A bank or app may impose a lower customer, daily or risk-based limit. The app’s limit and compliance checks prevail at the moment you send. Splitting a payment to evade a limit or a verification request can trigger a hold or review.

How the NEFT-based Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility works

Account-holder route

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) describes INRF as a one-way India-to-Nepal facility launched in May 2008 and enhanced in August 2021. An account holder at an NEFT-enabled Indian bank initiates the remittance. Funds are pooled at the designated SBI branch in India and electronically relayed to NSBL in Nepal.

An NSBL beneficiary receives an account credit. If the recipient does not have an NSBL account, the Nepal-side arrangement supports cash payout through authorized Prabhu Money Transfer outlets. The sender must provide the beneficiary’s name, address and telephone or mobile number, along with the information needed for the selected payout.

Account-holder sending steps

  1. Ask the Indian bank whether its NEFT channel supports INRF and obtain the current beneficiary format and tariff.
  2. Collect the recipient’s legal name, Nepal address and phone number. For account credit, obtain the correct NSBL account details; for cash, confirm the recipient’s preferred Prabhu payout location.
  3. Submit the NEFT instruction through the bank’s online channel or branch, following its required purpose and beneficiary fields.
  4. Record the UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) and the bank’s debit confirmation.
  5. Give the UTR and expected payout instructions to the recipient securely. NSBL or the payout outlet may require additional verification before release.

Walk-in or non-customer route

A person without an account at the sending bank can use the walk-in facility where offered. The RBI FAQ limits each such remittance to INR 50,000 and limits the sender to 12 walk-in remittances in a year. The sender must provide proof of identity. The bank may refuse a transaction if its records, purpose information or identification are incomplete.

Cash collection

For an INRF cash payout, the beneficiary needs the UTR and photo identity at the authorized Prabhu outlet. RBI says that if the cash is not collected within one week, return arrangements are made. Tell the recipient to check the outlet’s hours and identification requirements before travelling; an uncollected payout is not a failed transfer, but it will not remain available indefinitely.

Limits, fees and the amount the recipient receives

The following figures come from the RBI FAQ updated September 27, 2023, NCHL’s UPI–NPI service information and NSBL’s published SBI Nepal Express Remit tariff. They are not interchangeable: a fee shown by one channel may not apply to another.

Route and sender Limit Published charge information What to verify
UPI–NPI INR 200,000 per transaction, according to NCHL Launch material calls it low-cost but does not provide a complete sender-facing tariff App fee, exchange rate, final NPR amount, daily limit and recipient institution
INRF account holder INR 200,000 per transaction; RBI states no annual transaction-count limit For transfers up to INR 50,000, the originating bank may charge at most INR 5 and SBI charges INR 20. The RBI FAQ says NSBL account credit has no additional beneficiary credit charge Current SBI and sending-bank schedule for amounts above INR 50,000, plus any channel-specific exchange rate
INRF walk-in/non-customer INR 50,000 per remittance and 12 remittances per year For up to INR 50,000, up to INR 5 may be charged by the originating bank and INR 20 by SBI. If the recipient has no NSBL account, the RBI FAQ lists INR 50 up to INR 5,000 or INR 75 above INR 5,000 Identification, cash-payout charge and the outlet’s current terms
NSBL tariff description Varies with the selected SBI Nepal Express Remit channel NSBL lists INR 1 per INR 1,000 or part thereof for NSBL-account beneficiaries, minimum INR 75 and maximum INR 1,500. For non-NSBL beneficiaries it lists INR 1.50 per INR 1,000, minimum INR 150 and maximum INR 3,000, plus NPR 100 and up to NPR 10 IPS charge Whether the transaction is covered by this tariff, the amount band, beneficiary status and any pensioner or scheme table

These published schedules can appear inconsistent because RBI describes the general INRF structure while NSBL shows a product-specific tariff, and banks may present their own collection of charges. Do not calculate the recipient’s Nepalese-rupee amount from a headline fee alone. Before authorizing, record four values: the Indian amount entered, the total Indian debit, the conversion rate and the NPR amount available to the recipient.

A reliable cost comparison

  1. Start with the same Indian-rupee principal in both channels.
  2. Add every sender-side fee and tax shown before confirmation.
  3. Compare the effective conversion rate, not just the visible service fee.
  4. Include Nepal-side charges, such as a cash-payout or non-NSBL charge, when the recipient will bear them.
  5. Use the route that produces the required recipient amount while meeting the recipient’s timing and payout needs.

Speed, settlement and what happens when something goes wrong

UPI–NPI delays or failures

The operators describe UPI–NPI transfers as real-time, but real-time is a service design description, not a guarantee that every payment succeeds instantly. A transfer can be declined when the sender or recipient institution is not enabled, consent is incomplete, a limit is exceeded, an account is restricted or a participant is temporarily unavailable.

First check the app status and bank statement. A pending debit should not be sent again until the provider confirms whether the first transaction will be reversed or completed. Keep the transaction reference, timestamp, recipient identifier and screenshots of the confirmation page. Contact the sending app or bank through its official support path; the recipient should ask the Nepal institution to check an inbound transaction using the same reference.

INRF non-credit or delay

INRF passes through NEFT, the designated SBI branch and NSBL, so processing can involve more stages than an app-to-app payment. If the recipient has not received an account credit or cash instruction, do not create a duplicate remittance immediately. Give the originating bank the UTR and ask it to trace the NEFT leg and confirm whether SBI has relayed the funds.

For an unresolved INRF delay or non-credit complaint, RBI’s FAQ directs users to the originating bank’s or SBI’s NEFT Customer Facilitation Centre. If the issue remains unresolved, the FAQ also identifies the RBI NEFT help desk. A cash beneficiary should additionally confirm whether the payout was collected, is still available or has entered the one-week return process.

Wrong recipient details

Mobile-number, VPA, account-number and name errors are different problems. Contact the sending institution immediately, provide the reference and request a recall or correction; do not assume a recall is possible after settlement. Never ask the recipient to disclose a PIN, password or one-time code to “release” a refund.

Which route fits common situations?

Both people use supported apps

Use UPI–NPI when the recipient is comfortable receiving through a mobile number or VPA and the app displays an acceptable NPR amount. This is usually the simplest path for a time-sensitive personal payment, provided the live participant check succeeds.

The recipient needs cash

Use INRF and select the cash-payout arrangement. Confirm the Prabhu outlet, UTR and photo-ID requirement in advance, and make sure the recipient can collect within one week.

The amount is near the route ceiling

For an account-holder transfer, both published routes show a ceiling of INR 200,000 per transaction, but the provider may set a lower operational limit. Check the actual limit in the app or bank channel. A walk-in sender cannot use the account-holder ceiling; the walk-in cap and annual count apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The recipient has an NSBL account

Compare UPI–NPI’s displayed conversion and fee with the INRF account-credit total. NSBL account credit avoids the cash-payout step, but the exact charge still depends on the route and current tariff.

You cannot find the Nepal recipient in the UPI option

Do not substitute a merchant QR payment or send to an unverified identifier. Ask an NEFT-enabled Indian bank about INRF and gather the required beneficiary details instead.

Checklist before pressing Send

  • Confirm the Indian bank or app and the Nepal institution are enabled for the selected route.
  • Verify the recipient’s name against the mobile number, VPA or NSBL details.
  • Check the per-transaction and any daily or annual limit that applies to your sender category.
  • Read the final debit, conversion rate, NPR amount and all listed charges.
  • Decide whether the recipient needs an account credit or cash pickup.
  • Save the UPI reference or NEFT UTR.
  • Share only the reference and collection instructions; never share credentials or authentication codes.
  • Keep the receipt until the recipient confirms the exact amount received.

The RBI INRF FAQ used here was updated September 27, 2023, while the UPI–NPI launch announcements and NCHL service information date from June 2026. Participant lists, app limits, exchange rates and bank tariffs can change without changing the basic scheme design. Recheck the sending bank’s current schedule, the NCHL participant information and the recipient institution’s instructions immediately before a transfer, especially for a large amount or cash payout.
