For UPI payments in India, the standard NPCI ceiling is ₹1 lakh per transaction. That is not a universal amount that every bank, account, app or payment type must allow: specified categories can go higher, while your bank may impose a lower internal or daily cap. Tax payments have a separate RBI-announced ceiling of up to ₹5 lakh per transaction.
Person-to-person (P2P) UPI payments remain free under the latest Ministry of Finance statement. The same September 15, 2026 release describes a prospective merchant-discount-rate (MDR) framework for selected merchant payments above ₹2,000, but it does not state an implementation date. UPI normally gives the customer an instant result; a delayed beneficiary credit is a different event, and NPCI describes a conditional route that can take up to 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes its daily settlement.
What is the UPI transaction limit?
NPCI’s UPI FAQ gives ₹1 lakh per transaction as the standard ceiling. Treat that figure as the normal starting point, not as a promise that every transaction can reach it. A bank, payment-service provider or app can apply a lower limit, and a higher NPCI category limit may only be available for an eligible payment and a verified merchant.
The practical limit is therefore the lowest applicable cap: the NPCI ceiling for the category, your bank’s internal policy, your account’s risk controls, and any app or merchant restriction. If a payment fails below ₹1 lakh, the failure does not by itself show that UPI’s national ceiling has changed.

Standard and higher category ceilings
| Payment situation | Published ceiling | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary UPI payment, including typical P2P transfers | ₹1 lakh per transaction | NPCI’s standard FAQ ceiling; the bank can set a lower cap. |
| Specified higher-limit categories | Up to ₹2 lakh for some named categories | Only the categories identified by NPCI qualify; this is not a general increase for all payments. |
| IPO applications and Retail Direct Scheme payments | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | Category-specific ceiling in NPCI’s FAQ; bank and account controls can still reduce the usable amount. |
| Tax payments | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | RBI announced the increase from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh for tax payments; it does not raise ordinary P2P limits. |
NPCI’s August 28, 2025 addendum raises limits in specified categories for verified merchants. It also expressly preserves member banks’ discretion to impose internal limits within the NPCI ceilings. A merchant being able to accept a category-level amount does not mean every customer account can send that amount.
Why the same amount may work for one payment and fail for another
- The payment may be P2P, ordinary P2M, tax, IPO, Retail Direct Scheme or another named category, each with different eligibility.
- A higher category ceiling may require the merchant to be verified in the way NPCI specifies.
- Your bank may enforce a lower per-transaction amount, a 24-hour amount, or a transaction-count limit.
- The app may display a generic error even when the actual restriction is imposed by the issuing bank or the merchant’s bank.
For a large payment, confirm the category shown in the payment flow and ask the bank whether the account is enabled for that category. Do not split a transaction to evade a control without first checking the bank’s terms; multiple smaller payments may still be counted against a daily or rolling limit.
Is there a daily limit on UPI payments?
There is no single daily amount in the material published by NPCI that applies identically to every Indian UPI user. A daily or rolling 24-hour limit is usually a bank- or account-level control layered on top of the per-transaction ceiling. Banks can also limit the number of UPI transactions in a period.

Limits can also differ between accounts at the same bank because of customer profile, risk settings, transaction type or merchant status.

How to find your usable daily allowance
- Open the bank or UPI app that holds the debited account, not only the app receiving the payment request.
- Look under UPI, payment limits, transaction settings, security controls or profile limits. Labels vary by bank.
- Check both the maximum amount per transaction and the 24-hour or daily amount, plus any transaction-count rule.
- Confirm whether the payment is P2P, P2M or a special category such as tax, IPO or Retail Direct Scheme.
- If the app does not show the limit, contact the bank through its official support channel and give the intended amount and category.
Federal Bank’s published information page illustrates why bank-specific checking matters: it describes its own 24-hour and transaction-count restrictions and lists higher category ceilings. Those rules are an example of one bank’s policy, not evidence that the same limits apply across India.
Are UPI payments free?
For consumers sending or receiving money, the latest reviewed Ministry of Finance position is that P2P UPI remains free. Its September 15, 2026 release states: No transaction fee, platform fee or other charge may be imposed on individuals for sending or receiving money through UPI.
The statement is from the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and is dated September 15, 2026.
Do not confuse a customer fee with merchant MDR. MDR is a charge within the merchant payment ecosystem, generally settled between participating institutions. The same release says banks should ensure merchants do not pass MDR through to customers.
What the September 2026 MDR framework describes
| Covered situation | MDR described in the release | Customer impact |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant payments up to ₹2,000 | No MDR under the described framework | The release says the customer should not be charged. |
| Specified general merchant transactions above ₹2,000 | 0.4%, capped at ₹300 for transactions of ₹75,000 and above | MDR is not a customer charge; merchants are not supposed to pass it on. |
| Specified essential sectors above ₹2,000 | Flat ₹5 MDR | Applies only to the sectors covered by the framework and is not payable by the customer. |
| Specified capital-market transactions | 0.02%, capped at ₹300 | Category and implementation conditions apply; no customer pass-through is intended. |
The Ministry describes the framework prospectively. The reviewed September release does not state an effective date, so the rates should not be presented as already being collected without a separate implementation notice. Its estimates say approximately 96% of merchant transactions would remain unaffected and about 4% would be subject to MDR. The release also says P2P transactions represent 70% of total transaction value. These are the Ministry’s prospective figures, not a guarantee about an individual merchant’s bill.

Does UPI charge a fee above ₹2,000?
Not as a general customer fee. The ₹2,000 threshold in the September 2026 announcement concerns selected merchant transactions and the possible MDR treatment, not P2P transfers. A customer sending ₹10,000 to another individual is not automatically charged because the amount exceeds ₹2,000. A customer paying a merchant should also not see MDR added as a separate fee under the stated policy.
Because the release does not give an effective date, check the payment screen and the merchant’s receipt if a charge appears, then ask the bank or app for an explanation. Do not assume that a line item labelled “convenience fee” is an authorized UPI charge merely because it appears during checkout.
How long does a UPI payment take?
UPI is designed to provide an instant customer-facing result. In a successful transaction, the payer’s account is debited, the beneficiary bank confirms credit, and both apps can show a completed status within seconds. That user experience is not the same as the underlying interbank settlement process.
Three events that should not be conflated
| Event | What it means | What you should check |
|---|---|---|
| Payment initiated | The request has been accepted for processing; it is not proof that the recipient has money. | Look for a final success or failure status and a transaction reference. |
| Beneficiary credit | The recipient’s bank has posted the funds to the recipient’s account. | Ask the recipient to check the bank account, not only the notification. |
| Interbank settlement | Participating institutions complete their settlement obligations. | This back-end process can differ from the instant app display. |
NPCI’s FAQ gives a conditional delayed-credit statement: if the beneficiary account is not credited online, the beneficiary bank may process the credit and the amount can reach the recipient within 48 hours once that bank completes its daily settlement. That is not a universal 48-hour guarantee for every failed payment, reversal, chargeback or dispute.

What should you do if money is debited but the recipient did not get it?
- Open the transaction details in the payment app and record the status, amount, date, time and transaction reference number.
- Ask the recipient to check the linked bank account statement or balance directly. A missing push notification does not necessarily mean a missing credit.
- Wait for the status to move from pending or initiated if the bank indicates that processing is continuing. Do not immediately send repeated payments without checking whether the first one may settle.
- If the account was debited and the recipient remains uncredited, contact the payer’s bank or the app’s official support channel. Provide the reference number and explain that the payer was debited but the beneficiary was not credited.
- Ask the beneficiary to contact the beneficiary bank as well, because that bank may need to complete the delayed credit described in NPCI’s FAQ.
- Keep screenshots and account entries until the case is closed. If support gives a case number, use it in follow-up messages.
The available guidance does not establish one universal refund deadline for every debit-without-credit situation. A bank may resolve a particular case sooner or later depending on the status, settlement records and dispute process, so obtain the bank’s stated timeline for your transaction rather than relying on a blanket promise.
Why a UPI payment can fail below the headline limit
- Bank cap: the issuing bank’s internal per-transaction, 24-hour or transaction-count rule is lower than the NPCI ceiling.
- Wrong category: an amount permitted for tax, IPO or Retail Direct Scheme payments is attempted as an ordinary P2P transfer.
- Merchant eligibility: a higher category limit requires a verified merchant and the merchant is not eligible or correctly configured.
- Account or app controls: a newly enabled device, changed security setting or risk review can temporarily restrict payments.
- Processing state: the payment is pending or the beneficiary bank has not yet completed the credit, even though the payer sees a debit.
When the amount is large, capture the exact error wording and ask the bank which rule blocked it. “UPI limit exceeded” is not precise enough to distinguish a national category ceiling from a bank’s own control.
A practical checklist before sending a large UPI payment
- Identify whether the recipient is an individual or a merchant.
- Identify the exact category: ordinary transfer, tax, IPO, Retail Direct Scheme or another named NPCI category.
- Check the bank’s per-transaction, 24-hour and transaction-count limits.
- For a merchant payment, confirm whether the merchant is verified where a higher category ceiling is being relied on.
- Confirm the beneficiary name and account details before authorising.
- Save the transaction reference and final status.
- If the debit and beneficiary credit do not match, start a bank or app support case rather than making assumptions about a 48-hour refund.
What to verify because UPI rules change
The figures in this article reflect information checked for India on October 13, 2026. NPCI’s FAQ is periodically updated, and its accessible page wording can change. RBI announcements, NPCI circulars and bank policies can also introduce category-specific or account-specific differences. Before relying on a large limit or a merchant-fee rule, verify the current notice and the sending bank’s terms.
