In one sentence: a UPI payment (pay) request is started by the payer and pushes money to a beneficiary; a collect request is started by the recipient and asks the payer to approve a debit; a UPI block mandate reserves money for a later event rather than paying immediately. “Deposit request” is not one universal UPI category, so the exact flow must be named.
At a glance: three different UPI flows
| Flow | Who starts it | What the payer does | What happens to money | Typical result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pay request (push) | The customer who will send the money | Chooses a beneficiary and authorizes the transfer | Funds are pushed to the beneficiary in that transaction | Immediate account-to-account payment, subject to bank processing |
| Collect request (pull) | A recipient, merchant or other requester | Reviews the requester, amount and purpose, then approves or declines; approval requires the UPI PIN | No debit occurs merely because a request arrived; an approved request debits the payer | Payment completes only after approval and successful bank processing |
| Block mandate | An applicant authorizing a future obligation, such as an IPO application | Approves a mandate with the UPI PIN | Funds are blocked while the future event is pending | Money is later debited, partly released or fully unblocked according to the event |
NPCI describes the first two models in its UPI Product Booklet and explains the IPO mandate lifecycle in its IPO-on-UPI guidance.
How a UPI payment request works
A pay request is the ordinary “send money” path. The person paying enters or selects the beneficiary’s supported details and initiates the transfer. NPCI says a customer can push funds using an account number and IFSC, mobile number and MMID, or a UPI ID (also called a virtual address).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTypical payer-led steps
- Open the bank or UPI app and choose the transfer or pay option.
- Select the beneficiary or enter the supported identifier, such as a UPI ID or account-and-IFSC combination.
- Check the displayed name, amount and any note before submitting.
- Authenticate with the UPI PIN when the app requests it.
- Wait for the bank response and retain the transaction reference if the status is pending or failed.
Because the payer starts this flow, there is no incoming approval card that another person must accept. A recipient may see a credit notification, but does not need to reveal a UPI PIN to receive the money.

How a UPI collect request works
A collect request reverses who starts the interaction. The recipient or merchant sends a request to a payer’s UPI ID and asks that person to approve a debit. NPCI calls this a “pull” of funds from the remitter. The payer can decline it; approval is not automatic.
What the payer sees and does
- Receive a notification in the chosen UPI app. The request should identify the requester or merchant, amount and any available note.
- Open the request from inside the app rather than trusting a message link.
- Verify that the requester, payee name and amount match the transaction you intended.
- Choose approve or decline. If you approve, the app asks for the UPI PIN to authorize the bank debit.
- Check the final success, failure or pending status. An approval screen by itself is not proof that the beneficiary has been credited.
NPCI’s consumer FAQ answers the common concern directly: “We will not auto deduct payments from your account.” A collect request therefore is not an automatic debit. The payer must authorize it, and the bank still has to process the transaction.
How long you have to approve
The requester defines the approval timeline, according to NPCI’s UPI FAQ. NPCI’s Product Booklet describes a 30-minute default when the requester does not set an expiry, configurable validity of up to 45 days when an expiry is specified, and a one-minute minimum validity option that the payment service provider must allow when a customer selects an expiry. These are NPCI product settings, not a promise that every bank app currently exposes every value; check the timer shown in your app.

Collect at an online checkout
NPCI’s FAQ gives one example in which an online shopper enters a payment address, receives a collect request in BHIM and enters the UPI PIN. That is only one checkout design. NPCI also lists QR, intent, app-based and collect integrations for merchants, so a checkout that opens your UPI app or displays a QR code is not automatically a collect request. Identify the action the app is asking you to take: a pending request to approve is collect; scanning and authorizing a transfer is a payer-initiated push flow.
What a UPI block mandate does
A block mandate is an authorization for a later debit. It is best understood as a reservation, not a completed payment. The clearest NPCI example is an IPO application made with a UPI ID.
IPO mandate lifecycle
- Submit the IPO application through the participating intermediary and provide the UPI ID for the mandate.
- Open the mandate notification in the UPI app and confirm the application details.
- Enter the UPI PIN. The bank then blocks the requested amount in the linked account.
- Wait for the allotment outcome. The money remains blocked while that outcome is pending, so the account balance may show less available funds even though no final debit has occurred.
- If the application receives full allotment, the applicable amount is debited.
- If allotment is partial, the amount due is debited and the unused balance is unblocked.
- If there is no allotment, or the mandate reaches its expiry or end date, the blocked amount is unblocked according to the process.
The exact release timing can depend on the intermediary and bank. A “mandate approved” message therefore means the hold was authorized; it does not mean the IPO money has already been transferred to the issuer.
What “deposit request” means in UPI conversations
“Deposit request” is ambiguous. The official UPI material does not establish it as one universal request type alongside pay and collect. If someone is referring to an IPO flow, the precise term is a block mandate or mandate request. Calling it a deposit can incorrectly suggest that money has already moved.

If the phrase means handing over physical cash at an outlet, that is a separate cash-service process, not a UPI collect request. NPCI’s Cash Point material describes cash withdrawal and does not establish a general UPI cash-deposit workflow. Ask which app, bank service or mandate the speaker means before explaining what will happen.
Comparison by the decisions that matter
| Question | Pay request | Collect request | Block mandate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who initiates? | Payer | Recipient or merchant | Applicant authorizing a future obligation |
| Is approval required? | The payer authorizes the transfer they started | Payer must approve or decline the incoming request | Payer approves the mandate before funds are reserved |
| What does the UPI PIN authorize? | The immediate push payment | The debit requested by the recipient | The block and future-debit instruction |
| Are funds moved immediately? | They are sent in that payment transaction | Only after approval and processing | No; they are blocked until the underlying event is resolved |
| What happens at expiry? | There is no collect-request approval timer | The request can expire without payment | The blocked amount is released when the mandate ends without a debit, subject to the product process |
How to identify the flow on your phone
- You started the transfer and entered a beneficiary: this is a pay or push transaction.
- A named person or merchant sent you an approval card: this is probably a collect request. Look for approve, decline and an expiry indicator.
- The screen says mandate, block, IPO, allotment or funds on hold: treat it as a mandate, not a completed payment.
- You are being told to enter a PIN to receive money: stop. Receiving money does not require sharing or entering your UPI PIN at another person’s direction.
Words vary between apps, so rely on the transaction type and the money status shown by your bank, not on a casual label such as “deposit.”
Safety rules for collect requests
NPCI says the UPI PIN authorizes bank transactions and must not be shared. A legitimate collect flow asks the payer to enter the PIN privately in the payer’s own app; it never requires telling the requester the digits.
- Accept requests only from people or businesses you recognize. NPCI’s consumer guidance specifically warns users to accept money requests only from known contacts.
- Confirm the payee name, amount and reason before selecting approve.
- Do not approve a request merely because someone claims it is needed to receive a refund, prize or salary.
- Open the UPI app directly instead of following shortened or unexpected links in messages.
- Decline and report an unfamiliar request. BHIM provides a way to block users who send illicit collect requests; its safety information is available from NPCI’s BHIM page.
- If you entered the PIN on a suspicious request, contact your bank through its official channel immediately and ask it to review the transaction.
Merchant and app implementation context
Merchants can accept UPI through several integration modes. NPCI lists QR, intent, app-based and collect integrations. In a QR flow, the customer scans and authorizes a payment; intent can hand the order to a compatible UPI app; an app-based integration may keep the interaction inside the merchant app; collect sends a request to the customer’s UPI ID. These methods can appear at the same checkout, so “UPI payment” does not identify one specific request type.

For a merchant, collect can be useful when the customer has supplied a UPI ID and the business wants to request the amount. The merchant still has to wait for a confirmed success response; an unapproved, expired or merely displayed request is not evidence of settlement.

Pending after approval
Do not approve a second request immediately. Check the transaction history and bank account status, note the reference number and wait for the bank’s final result or contact the bank. A second approval could create a duplicate debit if the first transaction later succeeds.
Declined by the payer
A decline means that collect attempt was not authorized. Ask the requester to send a new request only after confirming the correct UPI ID, amount and purpose. Never share the PIN to “fix” a declined request.

Mandate still showing blocked
For an IPO mandate, the hold can remain until allotment, cancellation or the stated end date. Check the mandate status in the UPI app and with the bank or intermediary; do not assume that a blocked balance is a successful debit.
UPI Circle is a separate authorization model
UPI Circle lets a primary user delegate payments to a secondary user under defined limits. It is not the ordinary recipient-generated collect request and it is not an IPO block mandate. The primary user’s delegation rules determine what the secondary user can pay. Details are described on NPCI’s UPI Circle page.
Three practical examples
Sending rent to a landlord
You open your app, select the landlord’s UPI ID, enter the amount and authenticate. You initiated a push payment; the landlord did not need to send a collect request.
Recommended Free Tools
A shop asks you to approve ₹2,000
The shop sends a request to your UPI ID. You inspect the merchant name and amount, then approve and enter your PIN. Until that authorization and bank processing succeed, the shop has no confirmed payment.
Applying for an IPO
You approve the mandate with your PIN and see the amount blocked. The money is reserved while allotment is decided; it is debited only for the allotted amount, with the remainder released or the full hold unblocked when applicable.
