You may be able to upgrade a security-camera system and keep some of its coax—but there is no universal adapter or distance limit that makes every old cable suitable. The practical choice is usually between keeping a coax-based video system with compatible HD-over-coax cameras and DVR, or converting selected runs to IP cameras with a matched coax-to-Ethernet adapter kit. Inventory the installation first, then check each run against the exact camera, recorder, adapter, power and cable specifications.
What “reusing the cable” can mean
Coax can remain useful in two distinct ways. With HD-over-coax, compatible cameras send video over coax to a DVR that supports the selected signal format. With Ethernet-over-coax, a matched adapter pair carries network traffic over a coax run so an IP camera can connect to network equipment. These approaches use different equipment and are not interchangeable standards.
Manufacturers document both routes: Costar’s HD-TVI FAQ says its technology works over existing coax, while Axis and Lorex describe product-specific coax-to-Ethernet options. A cable that works for one approach is not automatically suitable for the other.

Inventory the installation before choosing equipment
Make a record for every camera run. This is a planning step, but the details matter because vendor specifications make reach and operation dependent on cable type, condition, connectors and camera power.

- 【Complimentary BNC & RCA Connectors】The included BNC & RCA connectors can double the connection distance, and act as the interface converter, optimizing performance in professional surveillance installations
- At the camera end, note visible cable-jacket markings, approximate run length, connector type, couplers or splices, and any separate power conductors.
- Inspect accessible cable and connectors for damage, corrosion or moisture. Record anything you cannot verify rather than assuming the run is sound.
- At the recorder end, identify whether the connections are BNC coax or Ethernet, and write down the recorder model, supported camera formats, resolution limits and spare channels.
- Document how each camera receives power, including any power supply or PoE equipment, and whether the intended replacement draws more power.
That inventory helps distinguish runs that may be retained from those that need a closer test or replacement.
Choose the system path that fits the upgrade
Keep a coax-based video system
If you want to retain a DVR-style setup, select HD-over-coax cameras and verify that the DVR supports their signal format and resolution. Costar’s January 2016 FAQ describes HD-TVI over old or existing coax and a recorder supporting HD-TVI and analog cameras. That is vendor guidance for its product context, not proof that any HD-TVI camera will work with any DVR.
Dahua’s 2017–2018 catalog describes HDCVI and a penta-brid approach supporting HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS and IP. Those multiple formats illustrate why compatibility must be checked against the exact recorder and camera models; they do not establish universal cross-brand compatibility or current product availability.

Convert selected coax runs to IP cameras
For IP cameras, use the exact matched adapter kit specified for the job. In the documented arrangements, one adapter connects at the camera end and another at the network or PoE-equipment end. Follow the chosen product’s wiring and power instructions; an arbitrary pair of converters should not be assumed to work together.
Axis says its single-channel kit can support replacing one or several cameras at a time. Lorex documents its own converter arrangement, including a receiver and transmitter. These are product-family examples, not interchangeable recommendations. Before buying, confirm that the camera, adapter pair, PoE source and network recorder are supported together.
Replace only runs that do not meet the chosen plan
A mixed outcome is reasonable: retain runs that pass the applicable specifications and replace individual runs that are damaged, too long, poorly connected or unable to support the needed camera power. The cited vendor guidance does not establish that an out-of-spec run can be made reliable simply by changing the camera.

Check distance and power against the exact product
Do not treat a maximum distance quoted for one product as a general coax limit. For example, Axis publishes the following manufacturer-stated maximum ranges for its T8640/T8645 single-channel kits, without the additional T8003 power supply, when a PoE/PoE+ switch is the power source. The figures depend on coax construction and camera power:

| Coax described by Axis | 5 W | 10 W | 15 W | 20 W | 25 W | 60 W midspan case |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RG-59, 22 AWG copper-coated steel center conductor | 225 m | 125 m | 100 m | 60 m | N/A | 270 m |
| RG-59, 22 AWG core | 300 m | 300 m | 265 m | 195 m | N/A | 300 m |
| RG-59, 20 AWG core | 300 m | 300 m | 300 m | 300 m | N/A | 300 m |
| RG-11, 14 AWG core | 500 m | 500 m | 500 m | 500 m | N/A | 500 m |
For the 60 W midspan column, Axis notes that the midspan powers the remote adapter and the local camera needs its own power. Axis says the copper-coated-steel figures represent worst-case performance when cable type is unknown; actual range can also depend on cable quality and thickness, connectors and the camera. These are specifications for the named Axis kit and setup, not a promise for other adapters.
Lorex’s support article, modified October 23, 2025, says performance and supported length depend on coax and coupler quality. Its page states reach of up to 900 m and separately lists RG59 figures of 400 m at 100 Mbps and 1,000 m at 10 Mbps in its product specifications. Those figures describe Lorex’s context and operating modes; they do not establish a dependable range for another converter or an unknown run.

Older figures should be read just as narrowly. Costar’s January 2016 HD-TVI FAQ states 1,500 ft (500 m) over RG59/RG6 and 700 ft (200 m) over UTP for the product context described there. Dahua’s 2017–2018 catalog lists HDCVI transmission up to 1,200 m over coax and 450 m over UTP. These historical vendor claims are not current universal performance promises.
Eaton describes a separate Ethernet-over-coax solution for its HERNIS HD IP FLEX CCTV system, stating reach up to 500 m. Eaton’s solution page says, “Eaton’s Ethernet-over-Coax system will allow IP data to be transmitted across existing analogue cabling.” The page presents the statement as a description of its solution and gives no publication date. Its reach should not be transferred to unrelated products.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteValidate runs before committing to a full conversion
- Match models and formats. Check the camera’s signal format and resolution against the DVR, or verify the IP camera, matched adapter pair, PoE source and network recorder as a supported combination.
- Compare each run with the specifications. Use the actual cable type and construction, estimated length, connectors and camera power draw. If a critical detail is unknown, do not treat the longest published figure as a safe estimate.
- Test a representative run and camera. Confirm a stable picture, recording, network link where applicable, and nighttime operation before changing additional cameras. This is a prudent planning check, not a claim that any particular installation has been tested.
- Expand in stages or replace the failing run. If the initial installation behaves as needed, proceed with other validated runs. If a run falls outside the chosen product’s conditions or fails testing, plan to replace that run rather than assuming an adapter will overcome the limitation.
Make the final choice run by run
Compare the options against the actual installation, not just the headline distance on a product page.
Quick Recap
| Planning factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Existing cable | Type, conductor construction where known, condition, connectors, couplers and approximate length. |
| Camera and recorder fit | For a coax video system, supported signal format and resolution; for IP, compatibility among the camera, adapter pair, PoE equipment and recorder. |
| Power and distance | The camera’s power requirement and the manufacturer’s range for that cable and exact product configuration. |
| Migration scope | Whether a compatible kit permits staged replacement, and which individual runs need replacement rather than reuse. |
| Cost and disruption | Compare the work of adapting or retaining validated runs with replacing runs that fail. Eaton presents reduced disruption as a purpose of its own migration solution; actual savings depend on the site. |
